1. Paul bought my KSD Jazz bass and is a great buyer - polite and efficient comms and very quick payment. Top bloke and highly recommended to others. What a great site this is!
 2. No worries at all - it is on his Greatest Hits type CD which I have had since I was 19! There is a great program by NCH Software called Golden Records which you can use to take music from cassette or vinyl directly on to your PC or Mac. I used it last week and it is great, easy to use and not bad quality either! If you go to www.nch.com.au and search for Golden Records you and download it and get a weeks free trial. Worth doing that just to get your fave records into MP3 or you could just buy them again on CD!
Thanks Gunsfreddy2003. Its a bit embarrasing that I have "If Only My Bass Could Talk" on vinyl but have not played it for a long time since I have no reliable way of transfering it to an MP3 player.
3. It was called Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and it is an old Charles Mingus tune! Hope that helps! Cheers Mark
Dear All I was at the concert at the Jazz Cafe in London on 22-05-2008. What was the name of the tune he opened the concert with before "Lopsy Lu". It is driving me mad as the riff seems very familiar. Anyone in the community know?
4. I sent Bernie my deposit and ordered my Spitfire 4 a month ago and really hope that it turns out as good as yours! How long did you have to wait for yours? I have been faithful to my Warwick for 15 years or so and then went down the Musicman route but I have to say that once I played one of these at Bernie's shop I was completely hooked and have now sold 3 of my 4 basses to fund this new bass. I really didn't think that there would be such a difference between the factory built stuff and the a custom bass like this but BOY there is! Interested to know how much you got to specify on this bass to your own requirements? Any pics of the back of the body and neck? Thanks Mark
I've had this about 2 months now and played it in most scenarios, my Gospel Bands, a Wedding do and several Covers band rehearsals. With +- 20 odd db on the three band eq most sounds are easily available through a set flat eqd LM11 and UL310. I would say that the mid control is overly fierce in comparison to the bass and treble, I understand these are adjustable and will get it seen to next time I visit Bernie. The overall output is hugely powerful and you do need to be carefull with your pre settings initially, and you need quality kit to bring out all the tonal nuances and harmonics she can produce. I call it the slap switch but it actually changes the pickup setup from parrallel to series I believe. The difference is subtle but unmistakably "GB" and adds that instant slight zing and almost a sort of echo to your slap notes, hard to explain! Playablity is superb, I understand the shape has changed over the years, and this being the latest incarnation is hugely playable, the neck is a work of art satin smooth and between Jazz and PB at the nut, just right. One comment I would make is that the bottom strap button being offset to one side makes it difficult to balance against a wall or your cab so the use of a stand is essential with such an investment, I would have preferred perhaps the twin button setup ala Status basses, small thing but trying to be objective. Bernies use of some fancy woods in my opinion makes for one mighty pretty bass, almost too much so if I were to frequent any "Pub" gigs, so I must invest in a less valuable instrument for those occasions. The finish and workmanship is impeccable and I would urge folk to try one if they get a chance, its a large investment but at my time of life its about time I spent some on myself. There are several Custom manufacturers in this price region and for the investment you have a choice to make if you want to stray away from the usual Fender fare and be "different", folk tend not to ask what sort of bass is that for some reason, which is cool with me.
5. I tried that Mark Bass stuff out and agree that it has a great sound, serious power and portability but the aesthetics of their gear always puts me off! I know that sound should be everything but I just could not cope with looking like a wasp!
For a really crisp, modern sound with plenty of scope for different music, go graphite necked Status (there's JohnGH's SII 5er on the for sale section) & anything MarkBass. You'll never look back!
6. Has anyone used the Elixir strings? I know they are supposed to last a lot longer due to the coating etc but the only bass player that I know to have used them advised that they felt weird and had a very strange tone and would never use them again no matter how long they lasted! I love the sound of a freshly strung bass but it always has a cost to do this for every gig - usually more than I get paid! Would be keen to try them if others rate them but don't really want to waste £40!
Some great comments here already............... I plead guilty to being very lax in changing strings, and I have been tempted to try Elixirs but they are expensive. I need to do some serious string research methinks. With regards to amps, I think I need to get something a little smaller than the Trace rig, so I'll will be selling that, and unfortunately will also be shifting one of the basses to help fund the amp. But the first thing I'll be doing is whacking some new strings on at least one of my basses, and I'll do that this weekend ( if either of the Sound Controls in Glasgow are still open ) Interestingly no-one has encouraged me to go for one of the Sei's that are for sale..................in my ignorance I'd have thought they would have been right up my sonic street. thanks again guys'n'gals, and please keep 'em coming. S
7. I will do - I have only just placed the order (last week) and understand that it could take up to 5 months to build. Must be patient, must be patient, must be patient - how long now?
Yup, the pictures just don't do the angel any justice at all. The funny thing is, everybody who has seen that bass, wants one like it. With wood like that, its pretty difficult finding anything remotely close! You'll love your GB. Post some pics once you have picked it up!
8. I have just put an order in for a GB Spitfire and am now feeling very enthused about the project having looked at these pics! I was down at Bernie's and saw "The Angel" when it was just a body with no electrics and etc and "in the white" ie no colour to the wood at all. I thought it would look good then but have to say that now it looks absolutely fantastic! I want one just like that!!
Another shot for your amusement
9. Need to shift the remaining basses from my collection and this is the next one that has to go! A superb example of this classic bass and in tip top condition for the age - honestly do not think you will find a better example, she has been really well looked after by her previous owners (one of whom is a fellow BC'er!). I need to return £700 on this bass which I think is a fair price for such an excellent example. Any questions then please PM me.
 10. The Grinder could be worth looking at at that price for sure. I am going to try and track down an AF9 then if you really rate it for that sound. I'd love a Mu-Tron but cannot justify £300 + on one effect pedal right now - I know that one day I will probably have to get one as it seems that they are the holy grail in envelope filters. Do you have any audio/video clips of you using yours? Would love to hear the sounds that you can get. BTW I read somewhere once that Flea used the DOD FX25 on Sir Psycho Sexy - bollocks or true?
While the Haz is an OK filter in itself - It really doesn't do the original Mutron justice. Completely different beasts, and the original comes out on top every time. The Grinder has a list price of $400/£200, but that isn't street price, so it will hopefully come down a bit. The AF-9 loses no low end at all in my experience. It's my 2nd favourite filter ever, after the Mutron (that I currently own 2 of). If I didn't have a spare, it would be the AF-9 as my back up filter for sure.
11. Is there a major difference between the original Mutron and the Haz re-issue apart from the price tag?!!! There are no sound sample for the Grinder on their site which is a shame - looks like it could cost a lot too. Have heard good things about the Maxon AF-9. If it is squelchy and keeps the bottom end I may just try one out! Thanks for your feedback
+1 on the Mutron (mines fixed now!) and the Maxon (great pedal) I'm also using an EMMA Discumbobulator at the moment which is fairly good. Also... this looks like it will be good to get the meatball sound: http://www.bargeconcepts.com/mb.html They claim its even better (s'pose they would though?!)
12. I just found out that Lovetone went out of business some time ago! Would therefore think that any Meatball is going to be hugely expensive now. Interested to hear which filters people have used and really do give you that squelchy funk sound from the 70's? I will start off: EXH Bassballs - Great sound at home but lacks a bit of bottom end for live use. EHX Q-Tron - Not bad at all but just not squelchy enough for me. Line 6 Bass Pod XT Live - A really great auto wah sound but the rest of the unit is just too complicated for me. Went back to stomp boxes after owning that beast! Boss ME-6B - The Dynamic Wah on this board is awesome and the closest thing that I have found to the Stuart Zender sound but again I found the rest of the board hard to use and also it is getting on a bit now. EBS Bass IQ - Probably the best that I have owned so far and still using it and will be at my gig tonight. Never tried the MXR bass auto q or DOD FX25B so thoughts on these would be good.
That's my fault for causing confusion whilst derailing the original thread to talk about my new 442 pedal! So ignore that one, it's probably not the the sound the OP was looking for (Meatball), not sure how close the Pignose comes though...
13. Thanks for the kind words - equally a great and honest buyer and pleasure to do business with!! Ken Smith could be yours in a few months time!
Bought the Sterling - great guitar in great condition - can recommend the rest of the collection, especially the Warwick and the Musicman, to everyone. Good guitars, sold by a good person - buy with confidence, guys - Mark - have a bump
14. You might all like a side project called Citrus Sun which was basically Incognito minus their guitarist/songwriter "Bluey" Maunick replaced with Jim Mullen of Morrisey Mullen fame. Very nice funky stuff.
Great band IMHO!! Their "Last Night in Tokyo" has to be one of THE best live albums I've ever heard - certainly in this genre.
15. I'll take that as a NO then!!! One day someone may make a multi f/x unit with some good sounds on it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA No
16. Never heard of the meatball!!! Gonna have to get one if it makes that sound!! I know that Paul Turner uses the EHX Bassballs, Mu-Tron and MXR Bass Auto Q but they don't sound like that. I used an EBS Bass IQ but can't get anywhere near that sound. Anyone know if the Boss ME-50B has any similar sounds? Just sold my ME-6B which had a similar sound but the bottom end dropped out in live use so no good.
Was the Meatball, 100% sure on this thanks
17. I have just bee watching the DVD of Jamiroquai Live at Montreux 2003 and on the track Little L there is a brilliant bass break with an excellent sounding envelope filter on it. Can anyone confirm with a degree of certainty what effects Nick Fyffe used during his stint with Jamiroquai and particularly on this track. I have been trying to get that exact sound for years and have struggled! Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!!
 18. Here, here! That's all I want to do for crying out loud! I am new to the forum and have enjoyed it up until this episode even met a fellow BC'er at a gig that I played at last weekend! I know that there are some really knowledegable people on the forum and I respect the fact that a lot of you guys know a heck of a lot more than I about many things to do with the bass but I have only used the information given to me by Warwick. If that is wrong then it is not my mistake - I am not trying to con anyone or be underhand. The bass has not been altered or changed in anyway at all by myself for the last 15 years! If it is not a JD then so be it but that truss rod cover has always been there and I had no reason to think any different. So if we could stop with this it is or it is isn't then that would be cool. We can all agree that it is a 1991 for sure and I am sure all agree that this was the better era for Warwick when they were a sought after bass manufacturer used by many pro's and a million miles away from the mass market manufacturer that they have become today. I know when I bought this bass that the thought of buying a new Warwick for under £500 was just a fantasy! I do appreciate the feedback from everyone on this topic - I am glad that it stimulated some interest! Now going outside to enjoy the weather and relax - no work makes me happy!
For gawd's sake, just let the poor guy sell his bass. I'm sure it'll sell on it's own merits!!!
19. That is exactly how I read and understand the e-mail from Warwick! Regardless of JD Thumb or just Thumb it was definitely built in 1991 and is a lovely bass to play and has served me very well over the years. I paid £1,800 for it in 1993 when I bought it from the Bass Centre in old premises at Wapping. I have just ordered a new bass and do need to sell this one. I have been advised that my price expectation is a little high (I am only going with the value suggested to me by my local bass expert!) So if anyone interested then please contact me and we can talk money!
I'm certainly no expert in Warwicks but reading the reply from Warwick my understanding would be; Pre 87 = JD Bass 88-92 = JD Thumb bass Post 92 = Thumb bass Therefore a 91 would be a JD Thumb as stated although if I'm wrong I've no problem being corrected. No idea about the bridge issue however. Good luck with the sale and now let's all have a group hug.
20. Whatever - bored now!
Hmmm thanks but no thanks on both counts
21. Agree to disagree. If you want to buy then contact me!
You have a PM I concur that anyone wishing to buy a beautiful bass should contact you... but
22. Suggest you re-read the response from Warwick it clearly states that the name Thumb bass was adopted in 1993 and before that it was JD Thumb Bass (87 - 93) and before that just the JD bass. Do not really care what the Warwick forum says - the manufacturer will know best and I have just repeated what they have told me! Anyway if anyone wants to buy this beautiful bass then please contact me.
Of course you can beg to differ However your email from Warwick supports what I just said. It was changed in 87/88 to just the Thumb bass. I can assure you that if you ask on the Warwick forum about the dates for the Warwick range you will get a response that backs up what I have said. TBH I've not actually ever seen a JD model with the 2 piece bridge... I have a feeling that the JD model invariably had the 1 piece Schaller bridge! There are former owners of JD Thumb basses on BassChat that can confirm that these basses had the JD name dropped in or about 88. Either way you have for sale a Warwick Thumb bass from 91 (if your date is correct) and I wish you every success in your sale
23. I beg to differ - please see the e-mail message below that I received from Warwick only yesterday. Dear Mr. Brown, in the early days the Bass was called JD Bass, after we changed it in 87 or 88 in JD Thumb Bass and in 92 or 93 we just called the Bass Thumb Bass. best regards Warwick Markneukirchen / Germany H.P.Wilfer 07.05.2008, 20:12 Visit our www.warwick-distribution.de
Just for the interest of historical accuracy. The Thumb bass was only referred to as the Thumb JD bass (named so after the guy who helped design it 'John Davis') for a year or two; 86ish. If your bass is a 91 model then I'm afraid someone has replaced the truss rod cover, as I can assure you that a 91 bass would not have that JD cover on!
24. I am selling my pride & joy Warwick Thumb bass which I have owned for just over 15 years and was only owned by one person before me from new. This has been my main bass for many years so does show some signs of wear & tear in places but nothing that detracts from it's beauty or great sound. This is the early edition of this bass which was first called the JD Thumb Bass before being renamed just Thumb Bass in 1993. Spec is as follows: - Wenge Neck - Wenge Fingerboard - Bubinga Pommele Body - MEC Active Pickups - 2 Band EQ - Black Hardware Comes with a gig bag and Warwick polish! Looking for around £1,300 for this beauty but she does have to go! If you need more info or pics then PM me and I will do the honours.
 25. No you are right and she is one in a million. Sadly it is my lack of ability that has dented my confidence with the fretless! Yes you are right it is in amazing condition for the year - you must have looked after her well? Whoever buys it will be chuffed just as I was at Xmas! Mark
Small world and all that - lovely stingray Mark, must have been very kind of the other half to buy it for a Christmas present? Unless it changed hands already that is... How would I know such a thing...oh yea it was mine! Nice stingray in great condition for the year, best of luck with selling it. J
