1. The Grinder could be worth looking at at that price for sure. I am going to try and track down an AF9 then if you really rate it for that sound. I'd love a Mu-Tron but cannot justify £300 + on one effect pedal right now - I know that one day I will probably have to get one as it seems that they are the holy grail in envelope filters. Do you have any audio/video clips of you using yours? Would love to hear the sounds that you can get. BTW I read somewhere once that Flea used the DOD FX25 on Sir Psycho Sexy - bollocks or true?
While the Haz is an OK filter in itself - It really doesn't do the original Mutron justice. Completely different beasts, and the original comes out on top every time. The Grinder has a list price of $400/£200, but that isn't street price, so it will hopefully come down a bit. The AF-9 loses no low end at all in my experience. It's my 2nd favourite filter ever, after the Mutron (that I currently own 2 of). If I didn't have a spare, it would be the AF-9 as my back up filter for sure.
2. Is there a major difference between the original Mutron and the Haz re-issue apart from the price tag?!!! There are no sound sample for the Grinder on their site which is a shame - looks like it could cost a lot too. Have heard good things about the Maxon AF-9. If it is squelchy and keeps the bottom end I may just try one out! Thanks for your feedback
+1 on the Mutron (mines fixed now!) and the Maxon (great pedal) I'm also using an EMMA Discumbobulator at the moment which is fairly good. Also... this looks like it will be good to get the meatball sound: http://www.bargeconcepts.com/mb.html They claim its even better (s'pose they would though?!)
3. I just found out that Lovetone went out of business some time ago! Would therefore think that any Meatball is going to be hugely expensive now. Interested to hear which filters people have used and really do give you that squelchy funk sound from the 70's? I will start off: EXH Bassballs - Great sound at home but lacks a bit of bottom end for live use. EHX Q-Tron - Not bad at all but just not squelchy enough for me. Line 6 Bass Pod XT Live - A really great auto wah sound but the rest of the unit is just too complicated for me. Went back to stomp boxes after owning that beast! Boss ME-6B - The Dynamic Wah on this board is awesome and the closest thing that I have found to the Stuart Zender sound but again I found the rest of the board hard to use and also it is getting on a bit now. EBS Bass IQ - Probably the best that I have owned so far and still using it and will be at my gig tonight. Never tried the MXR bass auto q or DOD FX25B so thoughts on these would be good.
That's my fault for causing confusion whilst derailing the original thread to talk about my new 442 pedal! So ignore that one, it's probably not the the sound the OP was looking for (Meatball), not sure how close the Pignose comes though...
4. Thanks for the kind words - equally a great and honest buyer and pleasure to do business with!! Ken Smith could be yours in a few months time!
Bought the Sterling - great guitar in great condition - can recommend the rest of the collection, especially the Warwick and the Musicman, to everyone. Good guitars, sold by a good person - buy with confidence, guys - Mark - have a bump
5. You might all like a side project called Citrus Sun which was basically Incognito minus their guitarist/songwriter "Bluey" Maunick replaced with Jim Mullen of Morrisey Mullen fame. Very nice funky stuff.
Great band IMHO!! Their "Last Night in Tokyo" has to be one of THE best live albums I've ever heard - certainly in this genre.
6. I'll take that as a NO then!!! One day someone may make a multi f/x unit with some good sounds on it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA No
7. Never heard of the meatball!!! Gonna have to get one if it makes that sound!! I know that Paul Turner uses the EHX Bassballs, Mu-Tron and MXR Bass Auto Q but they don't sound like that. I used an EBS Bass IQ but can't get anywhere near that sound. Anyone know if the Boss ME-50B has any similar sounds? Just sold my ME-6B which had a similar sound but the bottom end dropped out in live use so no good.
Was the Meatball, 100% sure on this thanks
8. I have just bee watching the DVD of Jamiroquai Live at Montreux 2003 and on the track Little L there is a brilliant bass break with an excellent sounding envelope filter on it. Can anyone confirm with a degree of certainty what effects Nick Fyffe used during his stint with Jamiroquai and particularly on this track. I have been trying to get that exact sound for years and have struggled! Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!!
 9. Here, here! That's all I want to do for crying out loud! I am new to the forum and have enjoyed it up until this episode even met a fellow BC'er at a gig that I played at last weekend! I know that there are some really knowledegable people on the forum and I respect the fact that a lot of you guys know a heck of a lot more than I about many things to do with the bass but I have only used the information given to me by Warwick. If that is wrong then it is not my mistake - I am not trying to con anyone or be underhand. The bass has not been altered or changed in anyway at all by myself for the last 15 years! If it is not a JD then so be it but that truss rod cover has always been there and I had no reason to think any different. So if we could stop with this it is or it is isn't then that would be cool. We can all agree that it is a 1991 for sure and I am sure all agree that this was the better era for Warwick when they were a sought after bass manufacturer used by many pro's and a million miles away from the mass market manufacturer that they have become today. I know when I bought this bass that the thought of buying a new Warwick for under £500 was just a fantasy! I do appreciate the feedback from everyone on this topic - I am glad that it stimulated some interest! Now going outside to enjoy the weather and relax - no work makes me happy!
For gawd's sake, just let the poor guy sell his bass. I'm sure it'll sell on it's own merits!!!
10. That is exactly how I read and understand the e-mail from Warwick! Regardless of JD Thumb or just Thumb it was definitely built in 1991 and is a lovely bass to play and has served me very well over the years. I paid £1,800 for it in 1993 when I bought it from the Bass Centre in old premises at Wapping. I have just ordered a new bass and do need to sell this one. I have been advised that my price expectation is a little high (I am only going with the value suggested to me by my local bass expert!) So if anyone interested then please contact me and we can talk money!
I'm certainly no expert in Warwicks but reading the reply from Warwick my understanding would be; Pre 87 = JD Bass 88-92 = JD Thumb bass Post 92 = Thumb bass Therefore a 91 would be a JD Thumb as stated although if I'm wrong I've no problem being corrected. No idea about the bridge issue however. Good luck with the sale and now let's all have a group hug.
11. Whatever - bored now!
Hmmm thanks but no thanks on both counts
12. Agree to disagree. If you want to buy then contact me!
You have a PM I concur that anyone wishing to buy a beautiful bass should contact you... but
13. Suggest you re-read the response from Warwick it clearly states that the name Thumb bass was adopted in 1993 and before that it was JD Thumb Bass (87 - 93) and before that just the JD bass. Do not really care what the Warwick forum says - the manufacturer will know best and I have just repeated what they have told me! Anyway if anyone wants to buy this beautiful bass then please contact me.
Of course you can beg to differ However your email from Warwick supports what I just said. It was changed in 87/88 to just the Thumb bass. I can assure you that if you ask on the Warwick forum about the dates for the Warwick range you will get a response that backs up what I have said. TBH I've not actually ever seen a JD model with the 2 piece bridge... I have a feeling that the JD model invariably had the 1 piece Schaller bridge! There are former owners of JD Thumb basses on BassChat that can confirm that these basses had the JD name dropped in or about 88. Either way you have for sale a Warwick Thumb bass from 91 (if your date is correct) and I wish you every success in your sale
14. I beg to differ - please see the e-mail message below that I received from Warwick only yesterday. Dear Mr. Brown, in the early days the Bass was called JD Bass, after we changed it in 87 or 88 in JD Thumb Bass and in 92 or 93 we just called the Bass Thumb Bass. best regards Warwick Markneukirchen / Germany H.P.Wilfer 07.05.2008, 20:12 Visit our www.warwick-distribution.de
Just for the interest of historical accuracy. The Thumb bass was only referred to as the Thumb JD bass (named so after the guy who helped design it 'John Davis') for a year or two; 86ish. If your bass is a 91 model then I'm afraid someone has replaced the truss rod cover, as I can assure you that a 91 bass would not have that JD cover on!
15. I am selling my pride & joy Warwick Thumb bass which I have owned for just over 15 years and was only owned by one person before me from new. This has been my main bass for many years so does show some signs of wear & tear in places but nothing that detracts from it's beauty or great sound. This is the early edition of this bass which was first called the JD Thumb Bass before being renamed just Thumb Bass in 1993. Spec is as follows: - Wenge Neck - Wenge Fingerboard - Bubinga Pommele Body - MEC Active Pickups - 2 Band EQ - Black Hardware Comes with a gig bag and Warwick polish! Looking for around £1,300 for this beauty but she does have to go! If you need more info or pics then PM me and I will do the honours.
 16. No you are right and she is one in a million. Sadly it is my lack of ability that has dented my confidence with the fretless! Yes you are right it is in amazing condition for the year - you must have looked after her well? Whoever buys it will be chuffed just as I was at Xmas! Mark
Small world and all that - lovely stingray Mark, must have been very kind of the other half to buy it for a Christmas present? Unless it changed hands already that is... How would I know such a thing...oh yea it was mine! Nice stingray in great condition for the year, best of luck with selling it. J
17. That comes free if you buy a bass!!!
How much do you want for the wheelie bin?
18. Hi Si, Good point - noted and actioned! I have had a few e-mails ref the basses and it looks like the guide prices given by the local shop may be a tad optimistic. Bottom line is that I need to shift these basses to get on to my next project so they do have to go. I am happy to talk "sensible" money with interested parties though. Thanks Mark
My friend just picked up the 5'er version of the KSD with EBS pre for £600, very nice basses so have a bump! Also, might i suggest slightly amending the title of the thread, people might think you're selling a 'Bass Collection' brand bass! good luck Si
19. More images of the Stingray as requested. If you need any further info just shout. Mark
Tyrekicking PM sent re the Stingray fretless.
20. Hi, Paid a visit to my local music shop last week and saw the guy who owns it who is a fountain of bass knowledge and he had advised that I should look at achieve about £1,300 for the Thumb and £600 for the Ken Smith. Hope that helps. Mark
how much you after for the ken smith and the thumb????
21. I am making a major change to my bass set up and as part of this I am going to be selling all of my current basses. Left to right I have a Ken Smith Designs KSD 704 Proto-J with an upgraded EBS pre-amp on board, next is my faithful old Warwick Thumb Bass with a thru neck. I have owned this bass for the last 15 years and I think that it was built in 1990. It has seen some use (gigs/recording) but is in great condition for it's age. The Musicman Sterling is "under offer" from a fellow BC'er but not 100% sold just yet! The MM 'Ray is 1991 and fretless and in excellent condition all round. If you are interested in any of these basses the PM me and we can talk money and I can send more detailed pics of each bass.
 22. Thanks for the compliment - I am thinking of changing to UL310. Any comments on it? Can you also advise how high it stands off the ground. My only gripe with the 2x10 is that it is quite short when on the floor. I used to have a 1x15, 2x10 set up and that was nice because the 2x10 was chest height. Mind you the compromise in terms of portability has been well worth it!
Nice basses, and I LOVE the rig
23. Thanks Dr Dave - for turning the pic round - would like to know who to di it myself. Technophobe number 1 right here! Cannot give you the 'Ray I am afraid but all basses are for sale apart from the Sterling which a fellow BC'er has put his name to! Thanks again.
Well - I'm supposed to be a Dr. so I better do my good deed for the day by making sure all of your cricked necks are cured!! Here you go. None of your free NHS treatment round here ,mind - so if it's all the same to you I'll take the fretless Ray in lieu of my consulting fee!
24. In between Cheltenham and Cirencester in Glos. No gas here so have to go for the lovely oil tank. Would love to be in Devon or Cornwall though - my favourite part of the world.
Nice collection - where abouts are you in the SW - I noticed the oil tank in the garden and insatntly thought you must live in the SW backwaters. I am in SE Cornwall.
25. Thought I would just upload my current collection for thoughts and comments! 2007 Ken Smith Designs KSD 704 Proto-J with EBS pre-amp installed (main bass at the moment) 1990 Warwick Thumb bass with thru neck - was the main bass for many a year! 2007 Musicman Sterling HS- Excellent bass and awesome sound 1991 Musicman Stingray (fretless) Can also make out the Epifani and Aguilar amps in the background - brilliant sound from these two. Sorry about the pic on it's side - computer won't let me rotate them - ok if you have a laptop! ENJOY!
