he said ON A BUDGET... I can just about justify spending £60 odd on a tuner, But NOT £160 odd
They are not £160 odd........................and really, how can you afford NOT to be accurately in tune? An accurate tuner is essential. And WTF, another 40 or 50 quid over and above a tuner that is not as accurate? Surely it has to be worth it, even if you are just ensuring that your own instrument (bass or guitar) is perfectly in tune with itself, including 12th fret harmonics. Peterson tuners incorporates tuning for every instrument and situation, including the Feiten tuning system. It makes a great difference. I know, I tried to perfect my tuning for 30 years until Peterson brought out this gem, which covers all tuning scenarios. Have a read of their website - your bass will sound much better. And this new machine is as good as all of the "expert" strobe machines that they have used for decades and cost 5 or 6 times as much. If you ever send your instrument to a luthier for setup, odds are he will use a strobe tuner. Or maybe this sort of thing is just not important? Well, it is to my ears. . Then again, we could all just resort to the philosophy that progress doesn't matter, and that the world really is flat.
IMHO - and on a budget - the Korg DT-10 is more accurate with bass frequencies, and it does guitar fine too
Really? more accurate than a strobe tuner that can tune to accuracy within 1/10th of a cent and is more than 30 times more accurate than LED / Needle Tuners. Don't be silly. Have another look..............

I have known Howard for longer than a lot of people on here have been alive. Always done a great job, and puts quality of service in front of everything else, never let me down. I have a custom 5 string (fender jazz type) fretless which he built for me around 30 years ago, and it beats everything I have ever owned - including a couple of £5k boutique named instruments. In a nutshell - if you ever need anything, from a screw to a vintage bass or a custom build - see the Bass Doc.
I am new to playing bass... and i have a really annoying buzz on the third string, 4th fret.......only place it happens. Can anyone out there explain this to me so that i can fix it?? Thanks guys
That is an unusual place to get buzz - if you are correct it may mean a fret needs polishing, but your best bet is to ask the Bass Doc (Howard)
I’ve seen no evidence of this. His videos are pretty much recorded in exactly the same format that 95% of the other music virtuosos record their videos and post them on youtube; a brief spoken intro followed by a couple of minutes of ridiculous skill but lack of imagination to do anything other than w*** all over the place with it. If you think there’s no one that can match him in his technical ability, then “FFS....open your mind a little?”. I’m obviously not denying the guy’s skill and ability, but of course there are people out there and on this very forum who could give him a run for his money. You’re no different from anyone on here who’s been defending Wooten when you say “I don't think there is anyone to match him in the technical arena” about this guy – that’s exactly the same as someone saying “Wooten cannot be rivalled in terms of his technical ability”. You were telling me to open my mind, but I think you’ve got the blinkers on mate.
Yes, open your mind................and please let me know the people in this forum who can give Serino "a run for his money". Maybe a few vids I could watch and learn from? I just love the hilarious comments we get in here. Of course, it's all about opinions, and it appears there are a significant number of individuals who get VERY aggressive if someone posts a comment that jars. Believe me, you can just ignore comments and avoid the stress damage while trying to get your point over. Simply PROVE your point. Thanks

I've known the owners of this business for 30 years, since long before it was started. I have spoken to them for clarification. It is indeed the finance provider that has gone in to administration and Sounds Live are sourcing a new service. Just to clear things up..................
Whether you like his output or not you have to admit he has a monstrous feel, it's to die for. I don't like some of the material but I would guess he wouldn't like some of mine I thought the other guy (Serino) has great facility but has chosen (in those videos at least) all the elements of bass playing that I don't like and cobbled them together in one fretw***ing festival extraordinot. Edit a little note to the OP, I agree with some of the other posts that it's prob a good idea to be a little less caustic when others don't like what you do, it's pointless, we all are interested in different things and we pretty much tolerate one anothers views here, two reasons why this is a great place!!
Gianni Serino's vids are all taken from his youtube/myspace sites - they are 99% educational and basically show people how to play in certain styles. They are purely there for that purpose. If you watch all his stuff you can see how skilled he is in all areas, from classical to soul, pop, fusion, funk - the whole gamut. He certainly does not play like this when in a group scenario - how could he? He plays some mean jazz (yep - even 4 to the bar), and in spite of my not liking the huge majority of what he does, I appreciate his skills and abilities and don't think there is anyone to match him in the technical arena. But I prefer to listen to Ron Carter and Steve Swallow
I bought the first one when it came out, I think it was 96 or 97. I was impressed with a couple of the tunes in terms of the amount of different rhythms he was making all at the same time, but the plinky-plunky double-thumb slap stuff sounded ****ing awful, and it still does. It's all very well being a talented instrumentalist, but if you use those skills to produce ****ing awful noises then you can expect people to pick you up on it. It's not just the famous bassists who manage to produce terrible music though. I think 99% of solo bass recordings sound like sh*t. Especially those bassists who insist on whacking a rhythm into a delay pedal and soloing over the top of it like it's clever. Almost guaranteed to sound like sh*t, and make the perpetrator look like a pompous knobhead.
I agree totally.....well said. I was always taught that the bass should be felt and not heard. (My father - jazz pianist). Slightly conservative, but I know what he meant.
All you’ve shown me is that there’s another bass player who can rival even the biggest fret w***ers out there. I was genuinely completely unimpressed by all those videos. The guy has great technique and I wish I was half as good as him, but he’s doing f*** all with it and w***ing unimaginatively all over the place. It sounds awful!
Yes, that was the whole point of the post. Duh??!!!! There are people out there who are more talented the so called"gods" that are worshipped on here daily, with perhaps even more technical ability. And they probably don't make any money doing it - and have never been heard of (generally). And the great thing about this guy is that you can go on to his youtube vids or his myspace site and depending upon what you want to learn, he gives great lesson on technique - for nowt. As for you being unimpressed - so what? That wasn't and isn't the issue here. It is purely an illustration of a guy who is technically (and he also does some non technical but musical stuff) better than the household names, and isn't up his own arse.
How can you moan about Wooten being a "one trick pony" and then tout this guy as being better than him?
Who is moaning? FFS....open your mind a little? Have a look at his other stuff.............like I said. He is very versatile. I don't particularly like/prefer it. I uploaded it to show there are other people (unrecognised) that have equal if not better ability in this genre than Wooten and the like. http://www.myspace.com/gianniserino He is certainly NOT a one trick pony..............

if you like slap, get a load of this OUTRAGEOUS, and check his other stuff out too...........makes Wooten look a bit average IMO
+1. I really don't understand why certain individuals in this forum feel it necessary to attempt to belittle such great ability. I wish I were in a position to decide whether to play this way, or not.
You are, it depends how much effort you want to put in to it, and the style you want to develop. And whether or not you have the motivation to get there.
I can't believe the thread about Victor Wooten. He has no soul?! Have you seen the Bass Day 98 DVD? Have you listened to all of his albums? Or have you just watched the Youtube clips where he's 'shredding'? This kind of narrow-minded opinion seems typical of some of the members of this forum. This is a guy who was in a band supporting the likes of Curtis Mayfield when he was 6 years old. What were you doing at that age? Playing with toys, I imagine. He has the most awesome slap technique on the planet, so why not show it off once in a while? What do you want him to do at a trade show or clinic...play some rock and roll basslines?
No doubt about it, he is a genius. A great exponent of the bass guitar and what it is capable of producing in that genre. But he does tend to be a bit of a "one trick pony". Problem is - like everything else - after a while your ears get tired of hearing the same thing. If he added more melodic lines instead of just the rhythmic approach, (like Manring, for example), it might help to elevate his status. I have all of his albums BTW, and I must admit by the third or fourth track of each one, I have had enough. His music is not particularly strong IMO, but I do appreciate his talent and skill. I suppose it is personal preference. But the slap style is wearing a bit thin.............and I didn't like Curtis Mayfield much either.
Ah, I feel a major reminisce coming on... I saw Back Door twice in the early 70's ( pre 73) when I was still at school up in Newcastle. The first time was around the re-release of their first album called "Back Door" by Warners, as I think they had done a private white label pressing first. After the gig at the Mayfair?? I wandered into the dressing room ( the innocence of youth) and got the sleeve signed by CH himself: he was busy wiping off his strings! The second time I saw them was at Biddle? Arts centre near Washington and they augmented the band with Alexis Corner, who really just sat in with them rather than being integral to the band. Seeing Back Door was one of the reasons I took up playing the bass... as I did not play it at the time. Not long after I went to Leeds Poly, got an EB2, a Truvoice 50 watt amp, and 15" cab the size of a Smeg fridge. It still took me 15 more years before I actually played in bands!
It was either the Biddick Arts Centre in Washington, or the Buddle Arts Centre Wallsend. It was a long time ago so I don't blame you for the hybrid version. Great days............ -
I think the key is to assess what you want to be as a player / band member / composer. I'm perfectly alright where I am as a self-taught type. I get emailed MP3s from the band, I learn them by ear which I'm good at, add some inflections and interpretations of my own and try to support the vocal and the pulse with everything I do. HOWEVER, I really wish I was an amazing reader, know deep theory, be able to play all scales and their intervalic variations at lightspeed, be able to improvise over bebop and be perfectly capable of getting a gig with Zappa had he been still been alive. I don't have the time to take this journey and have very little idea why I would want to. I am confused by myself.
It is never too late.

Physical problems with your hands when playing bass, whether it be a narrow 4 string or an expansive 8,10 or more, is normally down to poor technique. Spend some money on a good tutor..................
