How The Beatles still grip Liverpool ...
operative451 replied to EssentialTension's topic in General Discussion
Never argue with a fan(atic) ;D I dunno, maybe Murica could cope with white boys doing Chuck Berry impersonations whereas britain had already listened to Chuck Berry so it wasn't such a revolution? Its all down to what you like innit? Personally, Motown, Stax, P-funk and 'proper' blues of the 'Disability-Fruit-Surname' variety has had more of an influence on me specifically than the beatles, but other peoples' mileage varies. And that's all good... I sort of feel sorry for liverpool actually - its a microcosm of the general british 'hey, remember in the past when we did something good?' er, no, i wasn't born and neither were you..? Do a new thing, liverpool! -

The finalised (probably) Rikcon board... Fairly simple but seeing as it has to be Pulp, The Shadows and Queen among others it took a while to get sorted! And the 'Ok, sod it, everything - can we put wheels on it?' board. Just to play with and because my occasional upstairs neighbour thinks 2am is dubstep time!
This is what I've been playing with this afternoon:
Blimey flip, what does that lot sound like?! -
Lives on the internet, never more than 3ft away from their smartphone, will only use amps with valves?

What they said! Also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUAm5ecmZ1Q There's a close up of Rhonda Smith's hands at one point, you can totally see what she's doing... But yeah, funk ain't all 90mph slapping! Some would say its not that at all...

That's awesome! You can't go wrong with a bit of 70s proper funk...
Care to define 'new' in this context?
For reference, I wrote my first computer program at uni in 1978, my first software project (for a school) in 1982, was offered - but turned down - a job writing banking systems software in 1988, by which time I was a head of department teaching the next generation how to do it.
While I'm here, I can't help but feel your characterisation is bit sweeping and stereotypical (arising no doubt from your aforementioned bitterness). I have no kids, I don't do 'holier-than-thou', and whilst I can't help when I was born I certainly have no intention of apologising for it. I don't give a sh*t what anybody thinks about my taste in cars, music, philosophy or food - or anything else that might be relevant (athough I do sometimes get a bit antsey when people presume to preach the error of my ways to me). I worked hard in the environment that prevailed when I was working. It's different now: so be it.
I should have said 'internet' rather than just tech, as technically tech is whatever's technical at the time... Technically... So 'the web', circa late 90s. I spent most of the early 2000s being told 'you don't know anything, it was better in my day, make this telly typewriter thingy work properly'. So yeah. Bit bitter. But i'm having therapy! -

As a fully paid up Gen-Xer, yeah, whatever. Looks like the boomers doing their 'no its all about us! Beatles! Stones! Write a letter, forget your gungey hippy hop dances and social media telephones!'' thing again. And aof course, ignoring the generation they spawned while fawning over their grandchildren. Bitter much? A bit. But hey, i work in the tech industry because i was there when it was new and nobody except nerds with pierced noses knew how it worked.. I file that under 'win'.... -

My 'gig' amp is one of these: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Warwick-Blue-Cab-151-15-Watt-Bass-Combo-Amp/C1L - Obviously i've only played small gigs! How loud does someone need to be anyway?

Kim Gordon off of Sonic Youth... I'd never heard of Rhonda Smith before - but this clip is now my go to 'what should bass sound like' reference point. -
The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
operative451 replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Him off of Muse is probably the most innovative/popular person i can think of. There's lots of bass equivalents of Steve Vai and Joe satriani - the slapping equivalent of widdly music made for musicians... I spend a lot of my time listening to BBC6music, going 'ooh, so-and-so has a new song!' and then it turns out to be a new band of 20 year olds who've grown up listening to their parents' Simple Minds and New Order. In the way that britpop was 20somethings referencing the 60s, da yoof now seem to be doing a lot of electro-pop, and its often more fun to play synth sounds on bass than a computer! -
Glad its not just me! I stared naming things after farscape - In the season 4 companion (i think) Ben Browder said he got the idea from NASA that: "All important inanimate objects should be named after beautiful women." I've been calling all my bikes 'the beast' since i was about 10 because.... I probably should have grown out of it by now, but nah...
-
Does anyone else name their kit? I blame farscape... And i just wanted to post my groovy decal really! I felt that my white bass needed a bond villainess type name! My Flying V is called 'Funk Rocket Ajax', the pink bass is called 'Fifi la Bass' and my bike is The Beast - but they don't have stickers yet!

Well, clearly... Actually i've always liked 'when a child is born' too. And also 'Spaceman came travelling', even though its chris de bleurgh!

After mucho faffing and a slight cheat of using FL studio to do the drums because its easier to sync for recording, here's a test - deffo more 'Missing Link' than techno, but on the other hand, its the riff from Missing link... It's growing.... -
Mine's giving me OCD... Because i play in lots of styles i need different sounds for different songs. I think in retrospect i'd have bought a zoom b3, and in an ideal world i'd use my elderly Zoom 505 for everything, but it doesn't have the same 'whumpf' as a bunch of analogue boxes. We're working a parody of the flash gordon theme and while the zoom sounds make acceptable noises, the old style board through my 30 watt amp makes stuff fall over and my kitchen cupboards rattle...
Well it's quite normal to put ammo in a magazine. Sorry ...
This forum needs a 'like' button... ;D
-
I'm pretty sure that in my local WH SMith they sell Guns 'n' Ammo. The magazine, not the actual things. The point being, although its a bit of a douchey pic, its no less douchey than a lot of mags you'll find on the bottom shelf... And don't even go near the top shelf!
