Bass pedals Vs guitar pedals? Any real difference?
operative451 replied to operative451's topic in Effects
Thanks! That's interesting and useful! I must admit my pedals as they are make my amp go 'BTTTHOORRRMP' quite happily if i turn the bass (knob) up too much - maybe they bother less with cheaper kit? Interestingly i found the specs for the inputs on the zoom 505 and 506 , spot the difference? As in, there isn't one. I note that the 505 tuner can't 'hear' anything below about a C-ish on the A string, but that might be software... -
Hi! So probably there will be worms everywhere after this but: is there really much difference tonally between effects pedals made for guitar and effects pedals made for bass? I've only actually got one 'bass specific' pedal, all my others are guitar/whatever and i don't *think* i'm missing anything? I know that a lot of bass drive pedals have a mix control to keep low end but is that it? Backstory: i've dragged out my old guitar multi-fx (zoom 505, don't laugh!) for convenience and noise gate reasons and its ok - but clearly GAS is a thing, would one made specifically for bass be 'better'?

I have weird on/off photogenicness (see avatar, it was on that day!). I either look like a supermodel or Dot Cotton in a blonde wig. My workplace keep wanting to do pics of me for work promo stuff and despite running around being an idiot on youtube or posing with an axe for band pics, i won't let them! I'll either look awful in pictires i have no control over or i'll look like Andreja Pejic and then when i turn up to do work stuff they'll be like 'who brought the moose?'

Ok, i admit its getting silly now. Bringing the old faithfull zoom 505 out of retirement! I sort of live in multiple places, so the BIG amp is staying in london with the flying V bass and some pedals. Back down 'yer in the westcountry it's smaller kit and the faithfull pink commie P-bass. Novelty records that you think are genuinely good?!
operative451 replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
Four to the floor, cliches and sound FX with some octaves thrown in to round it all up. Exactly how John Williams imagined it should be. All very well played and arranged though.
I remember this from when i was a kid. I truly believe that history will recognise disco as the greatest musical form ever created. Sod liverpudlian boy bands! -

This is seriously my favourite record of all time. I want it played at my funeral. I can't work out how to do the embed thing... -
You're going to start thinking i'm sponsored by digitech, but... I got a sound somewhere between that and bombs going off using a Bass synth wah on setting 2 (octaver and autowah/filter) mixed with dirty dirt Marshall type distortion and both back into a thumpy amp. It was funnnnn and funky...

DI optimised variant! (Hello london!) Same as before but the 'California sound' goes after the mini mixer not before to give some amp flavour and compression to the whole setup. There's also a fuzz and standard wah to go in front, i may need a bigger board if i want to add those to the 'portable' set though! -
That is awesome...

To me they'll always be the boy band that i've seen my mum screaming over on an episode of 'sounds of the 60s'. My (completely worthless because i wasn't there) opinion based on an interest in how music got to sound like it did, plus a general interest in history, is that if it wasn't them it would have been somebody else. A new generation were ready for a new idea and the ones who embodied it were a skiffle band on speed! I went to see Mitch Benn do this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03szxdh on tour - its an interesting viewpoint: " Blurb goes: Mitch has realised that over the years many people have claimed the title The Fifth Beatle. In fact, so many of them have been described as such that there are now at least 36 of them. They can't all be right. But some of them are righter than others...

Hi! I'm in plymouth if thats any good? And it looks like a fun day? -
Unfortunately, it just means you don't get it. Not the worse thing in the world, it's just the way it is. Blue
Or it could also mean i was being silly... But hey, its ok, your epiphanies are more epipany-ey than anyone else's, you win. Is there anything on telly?

I don't know about all this 'you don't know man, you weren't there' malarkey. I mean, it sounds a lot like the first time i heard 'Let it Go'...

Uptown Funk - anyone nailed the tone?
operative451 replied to Truckstop's topic in General Discussion
I think the 'doh, dodo doh' parts are a sample of someone going 'doh' played on a keyboard. I've got similar using the 'yeah' noise on a Digitech bass synth wah if that's any help? -
It's the late 1980s. The cold war's been going so long you don't even remember that you're scared anymore. You've just left a school where nobody really gave a toss, and despite being moderately clever you don't have any hope of getting a decent job because where you live, there aren't any. The Berlin wall is about to come down, but you don't know that. Everything is stale, your generation's idea of music appears to be The smiths (english person moaning about england) or U2 (irish people moaning about england). Everyone from your parents generation that you know is a total f***-up, including your parents. They just keep going about 'their era' and how the beatles changed everything. Not much seems to have changed since. Fairground attraction are on bloody top of the bloody pops again. Then, late at night when you're twiddling radio dials, you hear this strange 'wiggy wiggy' noise and and a spoken intro to a record: 'Enjoy this trip. Enjoy this trip. And it is a trip....' https://www.youtube....h?v=GSb9w9AMIOs Similar?

Well, i am specifically looking at my parents and their friends, who were, to be fair, dicks. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents...
-
I think as a fully paid up member of Generation X, Boomers going on about the bee-attles is the same as their parents generation going on about 'the war'. Yeah we know. Yeah you were there, yeah it changed everything. Please stop going on about it now...

Is Keef right, Sgt Peppers is a load of tosh?
operative451 replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
Cant argue with that. even if Keef does believe it himself. We dont know what the man really thinks though, do we ? He may not have really said anything of the sort, I can remember reading a 60s 'interview' of is where the thing he hated most was cross eyed people, and his favourite drink was milk. Anyroad, here's something else for diehard beatles fans to get angry over http://suckmybeatles...a-load-of-crap/
That website's hilarious... -

Looking for some good simple recording software
operative451 replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
Deffo Audacity for ease of use for getting ideas down, recording in a 4-track stylee with no added mucking about! Otherwise presonus studio one is pretty easy to use for multi-track 'DAW-lite' stuff. And there's a freebie version.. -
My first and preferred bass - Marlin 1980s 'made in GDR' p bass, rescued from a friend's dad's shed! Rewired and new pickup, all no name stuff off of amazon and resprayed pink with car paint from Halfords! I love it! It 'just works'. No tech, no added mucking about, no switches and the basic-est of knobs! I have no idea how 'proper' it sounds, and my Very Metal Flying V is much easier to play but nowhere near as much fun. It weighs a ton too... Don't care, its my second favourite thing in the world after my bike!

operative451 replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
It's simple: If you weren't there, you can't get it. The music is only part of it.
I wasn't there and i don't get it... I know it 'changed everything', but also so did other stuff before (Glen Miller was more musically innovative IMO) and other stuff after - Kraftwerk, Acid House? Sabbath? And other stuff will again. That's a good thing! -

Ok, so THIS is the final version. No, really. Unless i decide to get rid of the phaser because i'm scared of it a bit!
