Walk on by - The Stranglers bass tone
operative451 replied to paul j h's topic in General Discussion
That sounds about right!
Thanks! If its any help i'm sure i read somewhere that on the early stranglers stuff they only had an AC30 so everything went through that. The joyo pedal is very much an 'amp simulator' rather than straight overdrive too, i'm not a million percent sure what the difference is to be honest..! But its got that marshall hollowness to it... -
Walk on by - The Stranglers bass tone

Couldn't resist adding my own attempt... This is my 80s marlin p-bass into a joyo 'british sound' (aka their copy of the sansamp 'british') marshall type pedal, into my travel amp, Warwick Blue cab 15.1. I think it sounds quite nice! Sorry about the massive file size, i don't have anything to reduce it with and my phone shoots HD! https://www.dropbox.com/s/s4xudxuij3fxpzy/VID_20150224_202039_edit_0.mp4?dl=0 -
Been trying this myself, it does seem easier with two amps to tell which sounds coming from where, but i've been using a Behringer (sorry) ultra-G box as a signal splitter, sending out to two separate sets of pedals, back through a mini mixer for eq and er, mixing, then into an amp set fairly flattish. Seems to work, but the stereo effect of two amps is easier. If you're starting from scratch you could go mixer-> stereo power amp -> 2 speakers?

Our slot at a local comedy event, in two parts. I got distracted by the front row being right below my feet and going 'awwww' at the Drop dead Fred references and messed up a LOT... Part one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E46AHrntzD4 Part two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNH2I05MdIs There's also a noise limiter, kept cutting the power. They've moved to another venue, we'll be doing that to at some point!

This is my benchmark as to 'what a bass sounds like': https://www.youtube....h?v=_mSmOcmk7uQ I actually use this as a reference when i'm fiddling with amps and boxes: https://www.youtube....h?v=l_2RZzxr2J4 Can never get the flipping embedding to work, sorry!!

Small practice amp / table top amp suggestions?
operative451 replied to lefrash's topic in Amps and Cabs
I recently got a Warwick Blue cab 15.1 to use as a travel amp, for 40 quid from my local second hand music gadgets shop (Wants in Plymouth, go to the small one not the big one!) and its fab! Easily portable, loud and light... Good noise too! -
Still popping in here occasionally and can never miss the opportunity for a quick plug! https://www.facebook.com/IntermittentExplosiveDisorder Featuring our not-christmas song and (somewhere) the videos of our first proper gig, including the bit where me going "BA DA BA DA BADA!" kicked in the noise limiter and "BA DA BA DA" very quickly becaime 'plinky plinky plinky'.

Heehee! Thanks! I'll go with that... We have noted that 'why can't X person f*** off' does seem to be quite a lot of our ouvre!

We did a song for Rik Mayall - being of that age group whose sense of humour was totally shaped by the Young Ones, Blackadder and suchlike. We can pretty much recite most Young Ones episodes, as i think a lot of comedy geeks out of the 80s could... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUGYoE1YlLs

I have a similar issue with my metal-tastic flying V bass. I was wondering about going with a treble bleed capacitor on the volume control but i also wondered if its possible to reposition the cap on the tone to cut bass instead of treble?

Ooh, lovely!!! Synth pop totally was the sound of my teens, i love it that you can now get really good analogue emulators than run on laptops, worb worb noises galore... I totally wanted one of those big lumps of wood with knobs on that went 'weeooo' when i was 12. I got a casio something or other, it got me started! Beautiful...

Playing with a Pick - looking for advice
operative451 replied to Count Bassy's topic in General Discussion
Just to resurrect a dead thread rather than start a new one: i've just had acrylic nails done and at band practice yesterday my tone was just WOW. Clearly picking with the full nail was partway towards a pick tone, but even being more careful and just using the fingertip gave more solidity to my sound as it gave the squashy bit of my finger more to push against. Ok, some of you may be a smidge 'eek' at the idea of having girlie nails, but if you feel like embracing your inner glam rocker then its worth it... -
Would You Want Your Own Signature Model?
operative451 replied to Norris's topic in General Discussion
I'd probably want an amp rather than a bass. Despite the gorgeous fabulousness of my flying V, sound wise i get on better with a pretty standard P-bass, its just more controllable for the sounds i like! Amp though, ooh, lets see, split channel with a nice valvey overdrive channel and a super-clean subwoofer, and not too big! And possibly in silver sparkle. With my big red 451 across the front... -
Thanks! Its my 'gear4music' flying v... but the one we used in the recording was my elderly marlin p-bass going through a POD using the Class-A modern tube amp model.. Sort of a semi-dirty soldano apparently!

Being an escaped guitar player i use both to get different sounds... I mute with my left hand if needed, does anyone else do that? -
raspberry pi... Super cheap and linux is fun... Whats worng with the laptop? if its just grinding a bit you could try a low system requirement linux distro? My elderly little netbook is now doing a happy little DR Avalanche impersonation running ubuntu studio with the hydrogen drum machine! Crunchbang is good too, seems to run most happily off a USB stick though for some odd reason!

I've got an idea for a band (Part II)
operative451 replied to phil.mcglassup's topic in General Discussion
Ever heard of this lot? http://en.wikipedia....Station_Loonies from round my way - been going long enough that if you play an instrument in plymouth you've either been a bus station loony or are friends with one! And i am totally impressed that you opened for the sisters!!! Whee!! I was in a goth band that mick mercer wrote about a bit... I think he called us willfully uncommercial.. Bah.. Whats not commercial about mediaeval and blues influenced operatic goth? -
Had to check they didn't have to be proper fenders.. My rescued from a shed probably 80s marlin. 'Naturally' relic-ed - ie old and beat up. It was red when i got it, before that it appears it may have been silver and before that black... And i take my brand seriously:
