I've got an idea for a band (Part II)
operative451 replied to phil.mcglassup's topic in General Discussion
Damn, you would have to be in the north! Otherwise i'd be in... Yes, you'd get laughed at, so what? There's a market, i'm sure you're aware of the whitby weekenders oop that way? The only reason i keep my zoom 505 is the flange and reverb sounds are nice for that sisters/mission swirly bass wobbliness..! -
Oooh! Very nice! I'm still liking my G4M one, especially as its getting played in a bit now - although i have to admit, it only really is any good for one sound: that of a jet taking off! So my trusty pink p-bass tends to get played more. But yeah, deffo awesome for metal!

Learning to read the dots - Sheet music to learn with
operative451 replied to Grangur's topic in Theory and Technique
Just found this! I haven't tried sight-reading since my CSE music which i did badly at, as 80s norfolk just wasn't ready for ambient industrial played on casio keyboards... This is fab, i'd decided that learning to read music properly would be my 2014 project, thank you! L:D -
I've had this in my head for a while...

Thanks for the feedback! I must admit, i'm a total newbie when it comes to recording by myself, i've always either just gone live straight into tape decks, or someone else has done all the knob twiddling... -

Finally got round to doing it: https://soundcloud.com/operative451/bad-2-the-boy-is-what-i-am Listening back to it as mp3, i think the vocals are a bit too high and the whole thing could be smoother mix-wise. But i'm not very good at mixing! Need more practice. And as proof of concept i'm quite pleased with how it came out!

I use ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom 10-52 on my jazz box. Gives it loads of oomph but i can still bend on the high strings...
-
I had one when i was little - my dad wouldn't give me any of his guitar picks so i used to bash away at it with a penny doing my best him off of the who impersonation... It had all scrapes down the front! Probably could sell it now as 'reliced' ;D
-
Must admit, after reading this, i'll be going for OD/Amp pedal (joyo sansamp clone) into graphic EQ into my DI box, and that'll be my 'rig'... Light too..!

Strap length: been able to play vs looking cool
operative451 replied to col.decker's topic in General Discussion
Clowns are scary.. Anyway, IED already has a clown. We shot it. I actually play best with my bass where my arms hang rather than reaching up like a beseeching puppy, and the first RATM album pretty much taught me to play guitar... I think we need a funk-off... -
So to mildly hijack this thread a bit - IED are looking to do our first 'proper' gigs - we both have mostly virtual kit and like it that way! If i were to turn up with my 'rig' as is: a bunch of pedals (including a sansamp copy) and a DI box, would this make FOH engineers happy or sad?

Sound clips! Recorded direct into USB mixer via a Behringer Ultra-G DI box. So they may sound rubbish! M4a as i couldn't find the mp3 quality settings for audacity. Clean except for DI, neck pickup, disco type thing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cdfpyzpb26ln9d2/Neck_clean.m4a Trad goth thing with chorus and reverb: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q12lyi05sqar7e0/sisters_bridge_aac.m4a Metalica type thing with OD: https://www.dropbox.com/s/22c38pblmocwz2w/Taalica_both_aac.m4a
Might I suggest to you ( in a friendly manner) that the point of playing the bass, or indeed any musical instrument, is to make music. The coolest thing you can do with a bass is actually learn how to play it in a musical fashion , not sling it round you ankles and look like you are trying to saw it in half with a plectrum.
It might be to you - if that's what you get out of it, fine. And i do enjoy writing, playing, recording and learning how to do all those things better. I also enjoy jumping about, showing off, making noise and dressing up - its all part of performing, and its fun. If it wasn't, all basses and 6 string guitars would be the same shape, and plain wood, and then what would we argue about? -
This is a few years back: http://img.photobuck.../ianbddrink.jpg I'm an inch or two higher than that now, but not by much.
Yep, that looks cool! Compare: http://londonphotos.biz/galleries/music/livework/photos/B4908_Level42IndigO2_034.jpg Very not cool.. Also watching the 70s old grey whistle test compilations on bbc4 has made me think, yeah, the prog guys playing fingerstyle looked way less cool with their fingers flapping around than the punkers with picks... Hmmm... Ok, fingers work better for certain sounds, but yeah... Flapping. No.... -
Just got back from my new year hols and given the V a bit of a bash side by side with my P-bass copy (also cheapie, probably - 1980s marlin ) . I know what you mean about the set up, the action has needed a good lowering, but i can get it lower than on the P without rattly strings, so thats a good start! Bridge and intonation look okay but i'll double check with a tuner, and the tone knob is a bit loose! All fixable though - and i totally agree with my esteemed colleague above, the pickups have a pretty grunty sound, i'm going to need to play with some settings! A good buy though, definitely!
-
Zackly, that's what I thought!
-
Couple of amps, drum kit, nothing massive... only for lunchtime use obviously! We're a creative industry! I answer to the serious questions, erm, don't know! The wood stuff seems good but the neck could be smoother - it just needs playing in i think. I'll let you lot decide pups-wise once I post some sound clips.

This could kick off an "interesting" debate

Weeell, dunno about this 'slapping' malarkey, it all sounds very bad for the thumbs! But being an old goffic metalhead disco diva, one of the things that turned me onto bass after years of guitar was that a lot of the 'guitar' noises on stuff i loved was actually bass..! Rage against the machine is an example, all the 'weewoo wahwoo' noises caught my attention: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMjjsjNBS_4 But its the bass that does the majority of the racketeering... See also Sonic Youth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqUYFf7vthE And the Jesus and Mary Chain, Sisters Of Mercy, Motorhead... Basically anything where you get the guitarist making widdly noises (or just noises in the case of the JAMC!), pretty much everything else is the bassist! -
Yer 'tis! I'm currently now off on my hols but i'll record some sounds when i get back!
-
Good plan, i'll try some recording! And yes actually, if you're a C#,.NET or java developer1 Initial thoughts: the neck dive is definitely a thing, but the whole guitar is so light its not a problem. It needs to mellow in and the back of the neck is unfinished so it feels a bit dry at the moment. The pickups seem pretty grunty, but not actually as brutally metal as i was expecting! The bridge pickup has a slight phasey quality to it, dunno if bass humbuckers are just like that or the wiring's odd, but i like it - and the neck pickup goes BWARM BADDERRRRR as you'd expect, but can also do some quite jazzy sounds with a bit of knob twiddling. So far, i like it!

Its arrived!! Delivered to work, now i just have to get it home. On my bike. err... Should be ok as long as its stopped raining! Came with a bag and everything, which is handy. Initial impressions, tuned and plugged into the office bass amp (i work at an IT company. The music kit is next to the giant scalextric) and sounds pretty thuddy! Hurrah!

I've got one of these: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/GI100.aspx It allegedly gives the sound of a 4x12 - you're supposed to be able to put it between a power amp and speaker using the direct link to cabinet and then DI from power amp to mixer. I like mine, it sounds pretty awesome!

Something Old & Something New - Your Recordings.
operative451 replied to xilddx's topic in Share Your Music
Goth band i used to be in with my ex... http://www.reverbnation.com/mothburner/song/240052-among-the-dust This was one of my favourites - no bass on this, just drum machine and me beating 7 bells out of a jazz semi! My first attempt at multi-tracking too, came out, er, a bit lofi, but hey... -
What the hell - i've gone for this: http://www.gear4musi...music-Black/8OS super cheap but my current bass was found in a shed, so its an upgrade for me... if nothing else it'll look great jumping about in videos..! And thanks for all the responses btw!
