So i'm A/Bing my Zoom B3n and my little Warwick Blue Cab 15.1 trying to work out exactly what it is i like about the Warwick. I have a hunch its the speaker as the DI out the back doesn't have the same thud to it. So i start with cabinet emulations by themselves and pretty much immediately find that the SVT8x10 emulation sounds super close to the Warwick. Chuck in a bit of no-messing about compression and that's effectively the tone i like. So basically Warwick managed to tune a 8" speaker to have similar enough tonal characteristics to an 8x10 that a cab sim sounds virtually* the same**. I don't know what's more impressive, that they managed to get that amount of thud into a little box with titchy speaker, or that the Zoom is able to fake it! I will also need to have a conversation with myself that goes something like: 'That does not mean you need an ampeg stack. You can't afford it and the nice goddy lady who lives upstairs currently says hello to you, which she will be less likely to do if she's being vibrated around her flat.' *ahaha! See what i did there! **subject to my crappy ears

Even with USB C which is supposedly symmetrical!!

What are you listening to right now?
operative451 replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Found this lot recently - not normally into shouting but its sort of post-grunge punky shouting so i'll let it pass... -
How many different noises do you want to make? My main reason for using my zoom less is that it just does too much..! Oh yeah, top tip for bypass! Get a Y-switcher pedal thingy and a patch lead with a small jack at one end. Stick it in the 'aux' input on the zoom and you're sorted... I haven't tried that yet...

I noticed the other day that the common denominator for me is massive string sections! So, Chic and pretty much any classic disco, Pet Shop Boys, Nightwish and other symphonic metal type things (although i find her out of Within Temptation a bit whiny). And probably one of my favourite albums ever is Metallica S&M...

Fortunately there are 150 patch slots..! I've got a bunch of patches set up that are variants on the same thing but with the thing that would be switched off, not there on one patch and there on the next. It takes a bit of brain retraining not to treat it as a pedalboard..! Where i do have different sounds for the same songs i just put them next to each other! Oddly i'm now mostly using mine for guitar now..!

That band everyone else likes but me, nicked everything they ever did... https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/beatles-5-boldest-rip-offs-54145/

Ok, i know its about pick playing, but interesting perspective on this vid from an ex-ramone... I wear low, and oh yeah, ride a bike! Ok, i have sort of given up my bike commute because of rain and laziness, but where i live its dead hilly, so any ride tends to involve a lot of braking - with flat bars and mtb levers, which is a super good hand strength work out...

Which bass cab and amp do I need for a small studio?
operative451 replied to EgorI's topic in Amps and Cabs
What they said - forget amps, especially if you're not going to be spending loads of money on mics. Everything i record 'properly' goes DI via a POD tube pre-amp sim, and for the video stuff i do its recently been a Zoom B3n right into the audio interface but actually the best results come with a Behringer BDI 121 what they said up there! This is for metal but its still got some good tips: -
Thanks! They were these: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0774NLQWR I saw a thing on youtube about the solid sort and why you shouldn't but i figure they're not going to be moving much..

Bass players who take their hand off the neck
operative451 replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
So just to check, playing with a pick and the bass at knee level while making devil horns with my left hand is ok? -
Yay! It was fun too... I just thought the anti slip stuff looked cool... illI'll find another use for it. And I bought the Velcro first but I've found it faffy before and went with the tape option instead...
-
Job done!! Didn't use the anti slip pad or the Velcro, just stuck the pedals down with heavy duty double sided tape...

Dimebag inspired paint on...

Hahaha! It's the best lit workspace in my flat... and obvs also doesn't matter if I get glue or paint or whatever on it... anyway! Part 2: top and bottom mock-up:

I was watching a 'rig rundown' on youtube and someone had a chopping board that they've stuck velcro on.. I plan on going to wilco at the weekend for a mini chopping board, some stick on feet and possibly some cool coloured spray paint.. I'll do a build diary -
Sure.. mine's a bond villainess...

Punk - musically significant or not?
operative451 replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
I was a small child when Proper Punk tm kicked off... But it definitely stirred up the pop music i would listen to in the 80s - I totally agree that it brought in the idea of 'you don't have to start playing at 12 and spend 10 years in your bedroom learning stairway'. Like for instance, i think synth pop wouldn't have happened as synths were only 'proper' instruments if you dressed up as a wizard while playing them. Guns n Roses considered themselves punk. Punk meant that if Blondie felt like doing disco they could. Punk filtered down to the Jesus and Mary chain saying 'a guitar is like a chisel' which got me playing, when everyone else who 'knew about proper music' told me not to bother because i'd previously broken all the fingers on my left hand, so i'd never be able to play like Eddie Van Halen. Grunge was punk. Acid house was punk. Arguable skiffle was punk, even Glenn Miller was punk... -

Ooh yeah, I like them!

I think i'm going to do an instagram vid with my bass strap as long as it will go, all on the low E and with a pick... And distortion..

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')
operative451 replied to Sibob's topic in General Discussion
Ok, i may have technically hopped off the wagon a bit... I bought an extension 'speaker on a stick' for my active 'speaker on a stick' i use at home for practicing and videos. BUT i am going to sell my HBW80 Bass amp as its too big and loud for my living room and giggage is mostly DI anyway. So that doesn't count cos its technically replacing. And i should get more money for the amp then a spent on the speaker. So its actually saving, really...
