The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
Woodinblack replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
There is no reason that a 4 string has to be any lighter than a 5 string - all of my 5 string basses are reasonably light (except my acrylic one). The lightest bass I ever had and played (spector RST) was a 5 string. Heaviest bass I ever played (that was wood) was a precision. Yes, there are 5 string short scales, I had a Ibanez TMB35 which was 30, there is a ibanez 5 string that is 27.5", and obviously a lot of customs. -
Well, in that case, it was hardly defective AI. It was actually very effective AI.

But luckily on my new mac update, I can select an AI description, right click on the text, select 'writing tools'-> 'Summarise' and get: • Sound Quality: Delivers powerful midrange and bass frequencies with clarity and impact. • Performance: High power handling and efficiency for loud, clear sound in large venues. • Applications: Ideal for live performances, DJ events, and large public gatherings.

Only when you are talking about an image categorising ai. When you see a round thing you isolate it by image comparisons (which the brain can get very wrong), then you start trying to categorise it by performing a set of learned behaviours that an ai could do too, if those were the behaviours it has learned, like you did. There is nothing in that tasks a series of ais couldn't do

May be of use to McMillen 12 Step owners
Woodinblack replied to tauzero's topic in Accessories and Misc
Would say they have been busy although it took them almost a decade without doing anything (and I suspect that is the one I have!) I use mine in every gig, but i haven't actually changed the setup on it for many years. I have a few songs that I play chords, and a few songs with just using it as a straight keyboard. I probably should get round to making chords for some other songs now we lost our keyboard player. -

Is that new firmware for the 12 step? Any idea what the updates are? I must admit to never actually having an issue with the editor, it always worked fine with me, or is this the new editor? Probably wouldn't update then if that was the case. -
There is a knob that turns to say what the pedal is (obviously pre-set if you use a patch). You press the toe end of the pedal down (pretty hard), and then you just use it as what you set it to. I generally have mine on wah, I only tend to use it on 'funky music'

Well, if you have a PA, why do you need that much? I run mine into a BAM200 and a 10" gnome cab at about half volume, just to have some bass on stage for the others to hear, not for me, I am in ears and through the PA.

What are you listening to right now?

Also note that its 'If the preamp of your GK is part of your tone' - you won't get any of the sound imparted by your poweramp or speaker in it, as you mentioned your speaker in the comment.

Ooh, Castle Cary, how posh, they don't let scum like us in there

So where did you play Mike? your facebook page seems to be a bit neglected! Sounds like a good night anyway, especially when you are winging it!

I have never had a bad NYE, I have had a couple that weren't that great, but most have them have been just like a pub gig only busier and paid double for being up an hour later. Actually, that is the same with wedding gigs for us - not sure why anyone would book us as a wedding band, as we are going to do most of the same pub set in pretty well the same way with maybe a special song, but I guess for a wedding band we are cheap compared to the silly rates people can charge, and people who book us are people who have seen us anyway, so they obviously want what we do.

Lucky you had your crowd as well!

I think this is one of the joys of gigging, some people you have to wonder how they basically function. We aren't a specific genre group, so in general we will play anything but so many times its 'can you play x'. 'no sorry, we don't know it', 'but its easy', and so many people try to talk to you while you are actually singing and playing. Sorry pall, my head hasn't got any spare capacity here. My bugbear is people putting drinks on my PA. Because I have the evox 8, there is a big bass box and a pole. I have two, the old one which is wood an entirely flat and a handy table, and the new one, which is plastic and shaped, with no flat area. I keep the black one near me and put things on it to stop people putting stuff on, or I can tell them not to and the white one further away because only an idiot would try and put a drink on a non flat surface that I put the bass through. Turns out the level of idiots is quite high at a gig, so a woman did just that yesterday, put a full pint glass on it. I didn't see or I would have gone over there, apparently it managed to balance almost 10 seconds before crashing to the floor, luckiy missing going in the PA. I need signs up but I guess noone would read those either. Anyway, last night, as previously mentioned, we had found out that our NYE gig had been given to soneone else without even telling us, so expected nothing, but luckily the guy in a local pub who likes us heard we weren't busy so opened the pub up, so we gigged from 10 to 12:45ish. Crowd were good, looked a bit light earlier so a bit of a concern but then people started streaming in and it was packed, also seemed up for a dance. After the countdown we had a agreed to do some version of old lang syne, so basically just written the chords down but no chance to practice - we figured the first verse and the chorus is all people know. Kicked it off straight and slowish to get the crowd going, verse and 2 choruses, then went into a punk version for a verse and chorus, then into a ska version for a verse and chorus and back to the straight version to end (basically this wasn't agreed, just what the drummer did!). Went down great, shame you can't use that song much! Finished at ¼ to 1, took a while to break down as a lot of drunk people insisted in singing into the singers mic (tried with mine, I don't have that) which was a bit pointless as I had turned the PA of straight away, but out of there by 1:20, home by 1:25! Great night, I am glad we got to gig, it has been a very quiet december!

Not sure anyone is bombarding with messages, I sent a message 4 weeks ago

After being stuffed out of our gig by the venue booking someone else, wasn't expecting to have a gig. However, someone got a cancellation and one of the other venues said that we had been let down so we were available, so they contacted us. They wouldn't pay much but by posting another venue that we play quite a lot (and practice at) realised we weren't playing and decided to open up for NYE, so we have a gig after all! Looking forward to that

once you've played a 5 string what's the point of 4?
Woodinblack replied to DDR's topic in General Discussion
Which is why I prefixed it with 'for me'. On a 5 string, 17.5mm is about as far as I will go, and it isn't prefered. If I could get it down to 15mm that would be ideal. For a 6 string, it would have to be less than 15mm Not sure what the future expansion is? But anyway, similar to your B, the C string is not really anything I have ever needed. As with the 5 string I use what position I want, I don't really see an advantage of 5 frets above the top of the G (or 3 in the case of my shuker). But yes, all sorts. I would like to get a 6 but I have never found one I got on with. -
I never really thought of changing the machineheads as a weight saving thing as such, more a way to improve the balance on a neck and make it more confortable playing. I have ultralites on both my ibanez 1605 and Maruszczyk - the 1605 was head heavy (slightly) as its body was so light, but it had the same tuners as the 5005, which was never head heavy due to the weight of the body. as a result the 1605 needed them and the 5005 didn't. I didn't know about the Maruszczyk but they weren't much and Adrian said it could be heavy as the body was swamp ash and cavitied, so I went with them.

Rick Beato gets all uppity about “Yacht Rock”…
Woodinblack replied to TrevorR's topic in General Discussion
Indeed - I wouldn't associate any of the 80s / 90s guitar rock based bands with the word glam back then, and still wouldn't.- 74 replies

Kind of what I was hoping, and normally I wouldn't think twice, everyone has the right to walk away from something without being hassled about it, but with the last posts, there is a worry there

I messaged her on the 5th December, it is still unread.

Rick Beato gets all uppity about “Yacht Rock”…
Woodinblack replied to TrevorR's topic in General Discussion
it was pretty common where I was to describe a more american form of metal. Glam rock was always viewed as 'that 70s thing' of groups like sweet, hair rock was mid 80s to late 80s and the first time I recall someone saying it was related to the album under lock and key by Dokken which was given to me by a guy who was a writer for kerang, saying he didn't like hair metal, which would have been a promotional white label at the end of 85. I never saw it as a stupid term, in a use where most terms were stupid, it was about the most descriptive.- 74 replies

once you've played a 5 string what's the point of 4?
Woodinblack replied to DDR's topic in General Discussion
Because for me the neck gets too wide to use in normal bass mode then, apart from when I had a GVB36, which for some reason I got rid of, and at that point it becomes easier to view it as a tapping instrument, such as an NS:Stick, but then it has not enough strings to make it versatile. So for me 6 is worst of all worlds, if you go past 5, you might as well go straight to 10. I don't play 4s or 6s, but I can see the point of a 4
