Most blatant, unashamed rip off bands
Woodinblack replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I am a big fan of stevie nicks 80s work and not really seeing that much of a sound similarity. I can't think of a SN track that that sounds like either, but I only have the albums up to The other side of the mirror, maybe her later work. Miley cyrus has always sounded pretty much the same. I guess they both have a bit of the sheep bleat effect to them, and they are both a bit nasaly but Mileys voice has a different peak in hers. If anything I would say that Miley is trying to channel her inner Dolly Parton. -
You don't get a lot of groups doing old Gary Glitter songs, and there arent many dodgy words in there.

The last bit wasn't necessary. That is why I don't do oasis!

Oh that is clever then. Post it on youtube, make it the defacto standard

Most blatant, unashamed rip off bands

But they were certainly bigger than Rod -
Not more of that cancel stinky poo! You can't cancel something, that is just a right wing meme. If you don't want to do something you don't do it, its not cancelling it. If your audience don't want to listen to it, its not worth doing it, its not cancelling it.

Couldn't find any Ladies? I would if it was the awful Peggy Lee version. Just because of the mess they made of those lyrics. My wife used to do the original and didn't have problems with that.

What is she ripping off? She sounds very much like Miley there (in that I would know it was her without the video) -
It is not even slightly an anti slave song.

From what I read sometime ago, that isn't even slightly true, in they were saying the marjority of deaf people like music. Unlike excluding blind people who can't get much out of a light shows, music can be easily felt by anyone.

Its really hard to try these things at the moment, not only are there fewer keyboards around, shops are less keen on you touching them. Not that you can really get the feel for much in a shop. The build of the Modal stuff is excelent. If there is any downside I would say the amount of operators is a restriction on the argon, although it hasn't held me up. Maybe in the future the lack of loading wavetables might be an issue, although I have a blofeld and I have never loaded any on that.

Songs that are bangers... that aren't sung in English
Woodinblack replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
Slippery slope of a thread! -
If you actually feel uncomfortable doing them then bring it up, is it not suppsoed to be for enjoyment or is it the day job? My wife refused to do brown sugar as the singer in the last group I was in with her, but that was easier as she wasnt a fan of the stones either (or am i) so happy to drop it. I certainly wouldn't do blurred lines. The guitarist always has a bit of a problem with doing billy jean because of the jaco connection - but he changes his mind, if he really didn't want to do it (like any song) we wouldn't. Doing Tubthumping, by chumbawumba makes me feel uncomfortable!

Love it, its really well made. Some things on the front panel are not immediately obviously but with the iPad app showing the whole thing it becomes pretty easy to work out. The sounds are amazing. I am however caught in the normal 'I want more keys' / 'if I had more keys I wouldn't play it' dilema! And it has to be said, aside from my piano, this has the nicest keyboard of any of my synths.

The IEM (in ear monitors) Bible thread
Woodinblack replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
We had that. The guitarist declared them horrible in 2 minutes and couldn't use them, so went back to his normal 'speaker behind his knees and constantly turning it up because he can't hear it'. The singer didn't like it but he is coming round to it. I love it, the drummer has a wired IEM and loves it. When I got a set for my wife in another band (which sadly fell apart the last practice) telling her that some people have difficulty getting used to them, she decided they were the best thing ever and why didn't I set that up for her years ago. -
I suspect for a lot of them their route to sucess isn't all that different. Taylor swifts dad was a music exec guy so that probably gave a head start, (not that that means she didn't work for it), Beyonce actualy got famous as part of a group before going solo, and Lana Del Ray was quite specific about her success..
-
I think the question was about bands. Clearly they would outsell RHCP, especially as Ms Swift has the record for the highest grossing tour of all time. But none of them are bands, they are all solo artists. There aren't that many big young bands. I mean I am happy to go and see wolf alice instead of any of the groups listed here, but they are hardly a large rock band.

Is British rock and metal now a cottage industry?
Woodinblack replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I believe (litteraly like on the other thread, genre unspecific), its not the old school approaches or that rock dinosaurs are still going strong, its that those old rock groups have a following that I don't think it is possible to get today. They got their following when it was still possible to get it. This is why there is no one to replace them and why groups today doing exactly the same thing as groups did before won't get anything like the following that those groups got. Not just rock, how many groups are there actually? Look at the charts, how many groups get in the charts at all? Its mostly solo singers (or singers featuring..). -
Music is different since the 90s. Back then you bought an album, listened to it to death and then you bought lots by those people, and those people who were related to those people, and you were passionate about it, so went to see them etc. Now music is basically valueless, you can hear it everywhere, and the tribalism and intense listening to one group is not really something that does the same now. Music shows are about some singer, as the only one that matters (hense the lack of groups), and xfactor type shows are shown as the way to get famous. Its just the age it is now, the era of the band is sort of over

Budget IEM systems - looking for recommendations!
Woodinblack replied to NicoMcJ's topic in Accessories and Misc
They generally are mono - if you want stereo you use two auxes for left and right. Seconded to this - I originally had an XR16, but one of the things I wanted (apart from multitrack recording) was the increased number of aux output so that everyone could have their own. Once you get used to having a good IEM, the next thing you really want is just what matters to you in it. I mean what is the point of having your guitarists solo in perfect clarity when all (or mostly) you want is your bass or your vocals? -

Woodinblack replied to NicoMcJ's topic in Accessories and Misc
I would have mentioned the downside of it being mono, but that is exactly what the OP is looking for -
On a £250 bass I wouldn't have much of a problem with much of that. Beyond that price its not acceptable. Yes, it can all be fixed, that is what separates cheap from expensive. If the knot annoys you now in the honeymoon period, it is going to drive you mad and stop you playing it later.

Gibson Victory Standard........any good?

Always liked the look of them, never played one. Not many around (unless they have done a re-issue?) -
Budget IEM systems - looking for recommendations!
Woodinblack replied to NicoMcJ's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have always used one of the LD sytems ones but the quality is a bit rubbish and hissy which I didn't mind so much, but when my wife wanted to try a system, as Andertons had the XVive U4 for £169 I thought I might as well try them. Absolutely crystal clear and so much less hassle to set up. One little xlr plug for the montor out, one little block for the IEMs and a dual micro usb for charging. Had a bit of a problem to start with interference with the mixer wifi, but changed the channel and that is now ok (also now changed the wireless for different matters). Cant praise them enough.
