Tips on finding other amateur musicians to jam with after 30?
Woodinblack replied to waylander's topic in General Discussion
Well, there is a taunton music scene https://www.facebook.com/groups/462202057152514 and I am sure there are more. Strangely dispite only being 20 miles away I don't recal doing a gig in taunton, certainly a lot in the surrounding countryside where music is very big. Actually one of the odd things is Ilminster, small place right, well in the last pre-lockdown year we did the Cricket club, the football club and the bowling club gigs as well as a couple of pubs around it and a couple of private events in fields. In fact, we are playing the Cricket Club in 2 weeks time. You did notice the bass bash in september didn't you? I am not sure whether you commented there. It is great and you will find a lot more people with ideas where to try -

Oh yes, our local pages are terrible, I only stay on them to watch the fights, but we also have a couple of music scene posts, and they are restricted to groups, gigs and people looking to form bands -
What is the heaviest you comfortably listen to?

I would just say that I am not able to take in any more information someone says after they have used the word 'Curated'. -

Yep like that. Sounded like a promising song and then.. oh well, next. I guess people must like it as it is really common. Synchronised swimming takes some dexterity. Don't want to watch that either -

Ah, didn't twig you were that close. Somerset is (was) pretty active with a lot of groups going on. Not sure which part of the border (its a 70 mile border!), but we practice near chard and several other groups practice there. There are quite a few groups near yeovil, although the amount of town pubs are closing down. A lot of towns have a local music scene page, and there is a somerset music hub page etc. -
Yeh, got roqsolid for all my amps and cabs, apart from my TC112, and they are now so bashed it hardly seems worth it

Oh no, can go wagner all day, its pretty heavy, and with a full orchestra, there is no shortage of metal. -

Love all types of metal music unless there is those screamy vocals, turns something interesting into something flat and 2 dimensional, its like a pop song with a token rap section. Basically any form of metal with singing I like. -
My joy in life is playing live. If something has cables they are going to be pulled out transporting them. There is no way I could trust a modular playing live, so it is a nogo from me. And the thing I really hate about playing live is all the cables!

And me - although I cope with ok with the model15 on the iPad

I would say the matrriach doesn't have a lot going on in the menu department!

OK, well the last thing I bought post brexit, my TMB35 went fine, it turned up after a few days when it should, it was all good. It was just the EHB1505 that had the split network that I returned that hermes lost that I had to wait 3 months to get a refund or replacement from them. Worked out ok in the end, I got both.

Welcome to your 30s A lot of people drop out of life in general between 30-45, then come back at 45 wondering what happened. You see young groups, you see old groups, that middle area is a bit less common. -
He was about the only person I have ever seen play the fender V, it was an odd bass, same range as a 4 spread on 5 strings, E-C and 15 frets!
-
Yes, that is one good thing you can say about them. Oh hang on, that is the only good thing you can say about them!
-
Yep - all he had was the one jazz bass.
-
Yep, I liked the subsequent, but although I came close, I couldn't justify getting something when I wouldn't have got to use it that much. TBH, at home I play the Piano and the Roland DS if I want other sounds. The piano connects to the Bloefeld, for other tasks. Now I have the argon, which is sort of a bit of a crossover with the blofeld., but although less versatile is very front panel 'accessible' (and has a seriously nice keyboard) Isn;'t that matrixbrute more expensive thought - or am I thinking of the polybrute
-
Indeed - Just 2 Jazz basses, a Fender Bass V, a fender Bass VI and a couple of alembics.

Bands you once hated but are now coming round to

Same here, not attention at all. Then I joined a motown group a couple of years back! -
Oh agreed - there are quite a few synths I would have to go through before those two were my choices (although I was tempted by the subsequent) but I was just picking based on the brief! Hadn't noticed the Pro3, but sequential stuff was always my first love

I had a gibson darkfire, the mother of the robotic tuners. It was fantastic. Ok, sometimes it took a couple of goes and the wiring was absolutely appaling, but if you fixed gibsons shocking QC, it was a great guitar, and it never had a problem tuning. Would have another one in a heartbeat but they have got quite expensive now.

I don't think it makes you less of a player that just comes down to your playing, just sometimes it is a bit more hassle. I have been in groups where one of the other players takes no spares to anything and has generally unreliable equipment, so always having to borrow spare leads, straps etc. I have had big delays in gigs because of these, I don't think it looks very good. I have the spares so can lend them but if noone did, what would we have done. I have seen a lot of bands in pubs faffing around with leads and things that have broken. Mind you, I have also seen the same with Iron Maiden, Motorhead, etc! Obviously some luck plays into this, you could go through a whole career of playing and never have anything break.

Actually not that much in this case. This is my motown group, last practice I brought my pedalboard (helix HX, Boss Sy1, etc) but didn't want to carry much so I was going to go straight to the amp but then thought about it and decided to bring the B1-4 as it fits in no space. The pedal board is for the other group. I just used some of the clearer patches, at the moment basically the default ones as I had too much other stuff to try out. But I flipped between the first patch and the motown patch, which tamed the EHB (which is a nordy, quite agressive, not so great for dock of the bay etc), and the jaco patch for part of feeling good. TBH, my main concern at the moment is the amp, it is only the second time I have used it and will be gigging it so I want to get some measure of what it does. For mono (whch is what I am doing almost all the time) I don't really hear much of a difference between them. For me, the 'put it in your bag, plug it in on batteries' almost zero setup cost of using it is absolutely perfect for practices. I don't find the depth of the effects are the same as the Helix HX at the moment, but I have only just started using it, and I have never heard it played through the same amp yet.

Exactly like facebook marketplace in fact. I guess that is the price you pay for using a free service - doesn't get rid of people who are not serious. I remember the group before the last group was from there too. But my main group, I answered an add, got contacted back, went to watch them at a gig, introduced myself, went for a practice later that same week, enjoyed the practice, thought I would join them, contacted them back to say so and they said they thought I had already joined, and could I do a gig the following week. Was a very busy week. Still with them 4 years later. -

Nothing quite as frustrating as joinmyband, you will get people asking to do something different, you will get people who seem perfect who just don't bother contacting you again and you will get a load of hassle. But, my two current bands are through adverts in JMB, and the guitarist we have just got on one was also through JMB, so I wouldn't want to not have that resource, and it is worth the hassle.
