  1. I have two bands. One we play pretty well every weekend, a gig or two, 20-30 gigs a year, goes fine, normal gigging issues. We played yesterday at a new venue, all went well except the bass was (whisper it) too loud! Of more interest, to me, when the band was in a bit of a quiet zone around january / feb time, I thought it would be nice to have another band to fill up the gigging schedule and so when i was asked to join another band, motown and stuff (I never did motown), it seemed a good idea. Saturday was our second gig! And it was only half a set. I am now the 3rd oldest member of the gig as everyone else left, 2 singers, 2 drummers, obv the bass player before I left, the horn section. I originally thought they were just unlucky with people but now I know why. Anyway, the thing that keeps me there is that when the female singer left a months or so back my wife joined as a stand in so I got to gig with her. and for all the hassle of the band, that is worth it for me. Whether we will get to a third gig, who knows. One thing is for sure, we will have at least learned 30 different endings for the 15 songs we gigged the other day.
  2. Personality traits like the hatred of gigging?
  3. Clearly there are going to be some people that do. I have met several musicians who hated gigging, a couple just had stage fright and hated ever second of it, and a couple who just like composing and writing music and recording, but had absolutely no interest of playing it in front of an audience. And also as expressed in here, ie, the purpose of this thread. Sure some people might do it if they were being paid, but that doesn't mean they love it, same as your job before you retired, you did it but didn't love it.
  4. If you hate the widdly odd time signature stuff, then how about 90125?
  5. Yeh. I would never do that. I mean, I love gigging, but if you are out entertaining people there has to be a payback for it, if nothing that just to say you are worth being there. I am happy to do the occasional charity gig, like a 1 in 20 or less, but only if I believe in it. I did one tonight in fact.
  6. It really won't, it won't make a blind bit of difference. If your girlfriend goes off with your best mate, does it help if it was your girlfriends idea rather than your best mates idea? So he is going to join a band to make them look better and then deliberately pick songs that the singer will mess up and they will sound a crap band playing live so that the rest of the group decide to get a new singer? I hope it sounds better in his head than it does when said out loud!
  7. I think that is the main thing for most people. Unless you need it to make money it is there for entertainment. If it isn't, don't do it.
  8. Would be hard to pick one, but there is something about Gates of Delirium that I always loved. Probably the same with parallels, but I think gates for me. They had quite an influence on my bass progression, probably more than I thought, as although I would describe myself as being more influenced by rush, when I play stuff, Rush is harder to play because he plays in a way I don't so I have to think about it, whereas I can play yes without a second though, not because I am necessarily that good, but in that I play exactly like he would, ie, it seems entirely natural to play like him. I am glad I got to meet him.
  9. The irony here with me saying I wouldn't do our set without a 5, we do saturday night, and I don't use the B at all on it!
  10. .. that you wanted something other than a kay!
  11. No, they didn't waive it, they realised you knew the law and stopped trying to rip you off!
  12. Thought you liked that one? I just got my B3n, loving it, going to swap the helix HX out for it.
  13. REM modern music? They formed closer to the end of the second world war than the current day! For me, 1) Yeh, why not, not necessarily my thing, but I am sure it is fun. 2) If life got in the way now it will get in the way again. Life is like that. Plus if he got contacted in june why not contact those people back? But if I wasn't doing anything I would probably contact them, as if they don't bother replying I haven't lost anything. 3) Hell no. Learning the eagles to play every 2 months? Sounds like a practice only group with the occasional grudging gig. 4) Too old for that but back in the day, would have probably given it a go.
  14. Not just an originals thing, we have exactly the same issue with a cover band, for a gig we are doing next week.
  15. As in, "Do you want to play the same three notes for 2 hours while we play a series of uninspired pentatonic runs that we have copied from a hendrix song?"
  16. That bit when you are playing a repetitive bassline that is the same almost all the way through the song, like billie jean or something, and then suddenly 3 minutes into the song after hundreds of repetitions, your fingers suddenly completely forget what they are supposed to be doing.
  17. I think it would sound pretty good! And if not you could always upgrade to a CTM300 - who needs a back anyway!
  18. Well, I can't do without one, but if he was using a 4 and didn't have a problem, there is no problem to be solved. I have no problem either, I just use a 5 (which is what I do).
  19. I must admit to being puzzled why you are trying to find a use for it. If a use for it isn't immediately apparent, what good is it for you?
  20. Yep, thats the badger. Still love the bass but that is most certainly a mistake.
  21. Sorry to be the neg here, you can see somewhere back on this thread, the break angle wasn't enough and there was no string retainer. If I am not careful how I wind my strings, I will get a string rattle.
  22. Going for really fringe now but I am liking their stuff quite a bit.
  23. I have one of these, along with a 2605, 1000, 5005, maruschyk Elwood and many others. This is still the bass I would grab and take if the house was on fire and I could only take one.
