  1. What a really odd thing to think. I only play 5 strings. I have played a 6 string live but didn't get on with it. So if you are playing mustang sally, don't you think having a 3 string bass is pretentious? I mean, you don't need more than 2. How about the guitarists, they sure as hell don't need all those strings (ours doesn't!) and don't get me started on keyboard players! But in answer to the question, I play a 5 string because I play a 5 string. If I was playing prog rock or disco or covers, I would be playing a 5 string, because that is what I play.

    Boss SY-1

So, in the general scheme of mentioning some new effect pedal which @Al Krow will eventually go out and buy, use, be impressed by, get fed up with and then sell before I get round to trying it, has anyone tried the new Boss SY-1 on the bass? I was thinking of getting either a VB-99 or a SY-300 or even I guess a Future impact, but this is cheaper than all of those and in the (obviously officially processed) videos sounds quite interesting. Certainly a lot less space than all the other effects, and I am sure I could probably find some space to fit it on a pedal board.
  3. The trick now is to get a conversation without them just randomly stopping talking and never hearing from them again!
  4. Seven? Hardly even worth getting started with..
  5. If it is the series / parallel switch that G&L do, you could do the same on the jazz, it would be the same as the S1 swtich on some jazzes. I had that on mine, it was very useful to give it a bit more of a kick.
  6. Oh - Parts - I read that very wrong and was wondering how your rehearsals panned out...
  7. I tried that - it is so weird. Never had any use for it. Bandmix too.. never got a band out of that, but have got a friend, so I guess that is ok. JMB though, I have had two productive bands, and offers of others from it (and a 3rd based on being in the first), so yeh, it is a pain sometimes and there is a lot of time wasting there, but I am more than happy that I have used it. Same here, plus all the 'go and hang out with local bands'. Who the hell wants to go and see some cover band in a pub Luckily, it seems a lot of people do. If you get abuse, you will be in the productive side of the site, at least it means they aren't ignoring you, which is the main thing!
  8. I would normally say Geddy lee as he has been my all time favourite bass player, and probably more than anyone the reason I took up the bass but because of the music I am listening to now, I will go for Mr Nick Beggs, as he is in everything I am currently listening to!
  9. Oh he played bass like that guy from Gillan!
  10. Well, there are some accounts of it above but it is certainly not a widespread thing, we are on page 39 of this thread and it only cropped up a page ago!
  11. At least some of you look happy to be there!
  12. You don't need an adapter, just a trs to xlr cable which is pretty common (although generally you could go straight in anyway). Not sure what you mean about the liver. If you want more slots and have more space, get the LT, otherwise the HX stomp is fine.
  13. She was indeed a dumbo rat, prizes to that man (ie, not teebs) for rat spotting!
  14. Oh if I have told you once I have told you a.. um.. once! Its a rat! (and yes they have tiny hands)
  15. Not even tempted to give it a bit more of a go? Personally I can't play BTB basses either because the string spacing is crazily wide, but surely worth a try for a bit?
  16. No, as I said in the post that that was quoted from. Just making the point about 'by any standard'
  17. While I agree entirely with almost everything you said there (and have said so a few times) I have a problem with this line. What is not a huge amount of money 'by any standard' of yours or mine, might not be of any standard to someone else. Obviously the OP could afford it, or he wouldn't have bid on it, but it always feels wrong deciding what is a lot of money to some people. I do know several people for whom £250 is a really huge amount of money.
  18. I have one of those, its my main case. The strap broke as I had too much stuff in it - I have fixed it now but don't use the straps much any more, and the little tags on the zips came off. I still like it as a case though
  19. I use .045 to .130 on most of my basses (apart from the 4 strings), and that seems to cover everything. Except the stick obv.. that has .008 to .118s
  20. Played 2 gigs yesterday. One was a very poorly organised outdoor gig with a well organised truck and PA guy to set up playing on a truck. Had the best sound we have had according to the second band who saw us because we started late. The PA guy said "I don't think it is going to be busy, he hasn't done any advertising', and it wasn't busy but it wasn't surprising, there were a lot of local events on that afernoon that had been well organised and planned. Still worked out fun though. Anyway, the PA guy said 'you were great, you should have been the closing band for the atmosphere' but we coulnd' tbe because we had another gig that night. Trouble of playing in a suntrap is you can get sunburned and I did a bit. However, still like playing on a truck, especially one with a great PA that is all set up for you! The second gig was in a working mens club and as it turned out, it also went really well, and as a first, we actually got thanked by the venue organiser. so that was nice.
  21. I find it worse than odd, I find it a bit disturbing. For every guy asking about a scam on a forum and being warned off there have to be 10 guys who are just saying 'oh an extra £50, thats good' without thinking 'why would someone want to give me an extra £50 that I didn't ask for?'. Which means that these people must be hugely successful, to the point where there must be a load of guys for whom this is their sole living.
  22. How odd. My wife who uses PayPal in her shop has done tens of thousands of PayPal transactions, of which a few have claimed they didn't get it. All of them were judged in her favour when there were issues and she had proof.
  23. Paypal protects you sending stuff if you have proof of delivery to the registered card address. All other bets are off
  24. I think the NS Stick is more suited to someone coming from a guitar only world, but one think I like about the stick is that it is different, it forces you to do different things. I have the advantage of starting life on the piano, but spending most of the time since teens on a guitar. Its still in the 'little too different' group, but I was just randomly playing it yesterday, without any concious thought of trying anything, and it was starting to make some noises that weren't too unmusical!
