Had a great Christmas eve gig - was an afternoon gig for £300, but got given £400 in the end as it went so well. New years we are at the same place in the afternoon, that bit will go well but the evening is a place that we havent' really ever had much luck with, I hope it goes ok! But no, the only cancellation was one from just before christmas because the pub closed down so it is hard to be that annoyed about that, compared to the people who worked there losing their jobs. But as said up there, if I wan't gigging on new years there is no way I would be outside on new years, its full of drunk idiots and that isn't anything like my idea of fun.

As I mentioned earlier that most people known for playing them are known more for playing other things, so lemmy, yes, but Macca? Hofner. Phil Lynot? Mirror pick-guard P Bass.
-
Agreed. But I only really play 5 strings, and even if I did play a 4, they have gone into a price bracket that is way out of what I could justify for a bass like that. If those weren't true, I would have one.
-
Are there? If I look at people I know from playing Rics, with the exception of Chris Squire, who mostly played the same ric and wasn't that complimentary about the others, and Lemmy, who just had the one sound, most of them also played other basses as well.

A few years ago there were not many bassists around, and if you looked on JMB there were loads of people looking for bass. However, now it seems the other way and there seem a shortage of guitarists. I have no idea why, there were always about 10 guitarists to every bass player.
-
Oh its one I bought on here a few months ago that noone seemed to know the model of, possibly a Q5 Pro 5 string. I like the sound and the look but the string spacing is not right for me in a way I am not sure why.

You need timing to go widdly-widdly-widdly-wheee AT THE RIGHT TIME!
-
Good? Good? Pfft.. I would be happy with one that had some form of timing!

No hate from any of my basses (guitars a different matter!), but the Dingwall got moved on quickly as although I loved the neck I couldn't get a sound I liked out of it, and the ACG got moved on as I loved the sound but didn't like the neck (it was actually a heavy necked one for the reason it was made). There have been a few others that moved on because they were fairly nothingy, Ibanez BTB, various fenders, and a few that moved on because I hated the neck. I think the current spector will get moved on because of the neck soon.

My 1605 was very neck heavy when i got it as the spalted poplar is pretty light (and they have the same neck on all of them). I got a set of ultralights as I had just got an Elwood with them on (as recommended by Maruszczyk) and it stopped the problem. Still have it, still my favourite. The 5005 has the same sort of neck (almost), but luckily being made with a wenge top has a lot more gravity on the bottom!

Thats probably why they never interviewed him.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2018?
Woodinblack replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
The preamp shouldn't define the sound of the bass unless it is defective. With a perfect preamp should sound identical between passive and active going through a very short cable to a high impedance amplifier. Obviously it won't sound the same because you don't generally use a really short cable or a perfect high impedance amplifier (although a valve preamp is often better for this). Most people use a cable that is quite long, so there are capacitive and resistant losses in the cable, giving a softer tone which is what I think people often define as a passive sound. However, you can turn bass and treble up on the preamp, but that shouldn't change the sound. Pickups on the other hand do make a fair bit of a difference. But then they don't have to cost the earth, although the nords are nice. -
None of the 1xxx or 2xxx have 3v circuitry, that was only used on the 5000-5006. The premiums all currently have 9v preamp, bass / mid / treble and a 2 or 3 band mid frequency switch. The 3v was on the 5000/4/5 which had bass/mid/mid freq/treble, but I have replaced the preamp with a glockenclang as treble didn't work (as it often didn't). Its a good upgrade. The premiums are basically the all same, mahogany bodies with a cap of something else, which makes the model, mostly all available in 4/5/6 string. I would love a 2605 but it doesn't really give me much over the 1605 (or 5005), and I wouldn't get rid of that and I am trying to cut down!

Bands you think were better before they got big
Woodinblack replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
No. I don't like wings, although I can't say I am a fan of the beatles either. Trick of the Tail though is one of my favourite albums every, of any group. Some of the earlier genesis albums are ok, but not lamb lies down, never could get into that. However, the first gabriel albums have moments of sheer genius. -
I like most of them for various reasons, well, if you ignore the 90s on, until maybe more recently obviously, but that goes without saying. But which one is my favourite really depends on if I am in a Permanent Waves / Moving Pictures, or Signals -> Power Windows sort of mood. Was never that keen on Hold your fire, even though I enjoyed the gig. It was the last album from moving pictures onwards that I bought on release day.

ebay seller making up the rules...
Woodinblack replied to prowla's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I would only accept paypal if I was shipping the item to someone to have proof it was sold, paypal on collection just means you could claim that they never sent it to you, there is no proof you got it but proof that it was paid for, so it seems odd he would want it that way. But I would always be more than happy to have cash on collection, that is the best payment option method for me. -
Squier Classic Vibe 60s Precision

I guess it is the exchange rate that we have now but that is very expensive -
Yep, the whole immediacy of having an instrument there. For years I had a lot of keyboards around, but never played them because of the effort to set stuff up. Now I go into my room, press 1 on the power button and all my keyboards / mixer / amp comes to life. I press a key on something, it makes sound. With the bass, theres some upstairs, theres some downstairs. Some advert comes on the telly, I will grab a bass and play along to the advert, just because, well, it is what I do. There is a guitar there too, just in case. And a flute. And a AKAI wind instrument. All just ready for inspiration.

I love post Gabriel Genesis. Although some of their stuff before that was ok, I can listen to it, Collins Genesis would feature as one of my all time favourite bands. And strangely, Gabriel solo work would feature as some of my favourite 'solo' artist. For me, Gabriel leaving Genesis was one of the best things that happened in music, they both became so much better afterwards. -
Any bass of mine in a case doesn't get played. If it doesn't get played it gets sold. Therefore if I put a bass in a case it means that it is going to end up sold! Sometimes I will pick up a bass and play it for a minute and put it back because I have an idea I thought about - if there was a case in the way that would stop that. I guess it works for people in tidy or big houses, I have neither!
-
Are they that heavy?
-
Although I probably wouldn't (and I would love one of those), I don't see that you wouldn't be able to use a hanger if you could find one wide enough

Go for Geek99s idea - nail it to a piece of wood and screw that to the wall
