  1. My microphone stand isn't that high! I have an iPad pro, which I don't use live (but in practices) and that has a battery life of for ever, and I had an iPad air 2 that had a decent battery life when I was using soft synths. However that one died (not live, it just one day was dead and refused to charge), so I got a cheap on off ebay but the battery isn't great. But I don't use soft synths any more and I don't use it that much on the mixer app, as I have the XControl. I use it for setup, then mostly it is lyrics, but I do go to it from time to time. Performance wise it is good, not sure whether to get something else later, or just stick another batttery in it. Maybe after a year or two I might update my iPad Pro and use that one live - I bought it as it was the last one with a jack socket for audio.
  2. That is audio background mode, which an app can register at, such as a music player or youtube pro. There is also timer access, periodic network access and map update. These are a specific type of app, they cannot choose to run in the background. Its not a tit for tat discussions, I am just saying what it does. Personally I was wondering why A&H don't appear to be able to do what behringer do, because its not like behringer are a beacon of app design. What I see of their app looks really good, but that seems a huge drop off in functionality, unless you are expected to have a device dedicated to it.
  3. as previously mentioned, the app doesn't run full time in the background, so it isn't a resource hog. Because my iPad is old, if i use the X-Air app full time on the screen for a whole 3 hour gig, chances are it would be dead before the end of the gig. But I don't, because I switch away from it. Ah, ok so you are talking about the processing of the iPad. Almost certainlyt he client device is a combination of streams and request / responses. I would not only argue that there is no point keeping this going when the UI isn't presented, I would absolutely believe there is no reason to show this when the UI isn't being presented. But this is the iPads job, not the mixers job - you can send what you want to an iPad, if it has put the application into the background it isn't getting much time and it sure as hell can't make an interface update. However, the second it does come back, it can. And this is what the issue is for me. Absolutely it can't, because apple have taken care of that and it has nothing to do with the app design. You can't app design your way out of that one *. Again, this is a misunderstanding with what you said, I assumed you were talking about the mixer, as the iPad client software is netiher here or there from a power or processsing point of view. What I want to know (and I haven't used this mixer), is why cant A&H design an app or interface to their mixer that is at least as responsive to the users requirements as behrnger did a decade ago? I mean, the fancy stufff looks good, but if when I switch away from the app to a lyric app and then switch back, I have to reconnect somehow in a way that people are suggesting, then it is for my use case, and most other people I have seen using digital mixers who don't have a stand alone mixing guy, completely useless. * actually you can in specific circumstances, but this is not one of those.
  4. That is partially true, but there are ways round it. Currently with the Behringer X-Air software and a behringer X18, at a gig I can change freely between Songbook pro to see what song is coming up or lyrics etc and XAir to adjust something as and when it needs adjusting. There is no percieved delay between activity in either apps when I switch. So to me as a user, I don't really care what they were doing in the background, if anything, all I care about is that they are both available to me with no additional action when switching to them. And they are. Any drop of of that level of functionality, regardless of how it is done, I would consider not very useable, especially in a more premium product, as this is my main gig time use of that software and mixer. I would say I also have the XControl so I can adjust levels as I am going on in the gig, but I still use the app more near the start of the gig, or if I need to see levels and if there is any feedback or anything.
  5. Both of those arguments make no sense - does that mean while it is showing the user interface it doesn't have enough processing to mix, if it does, what is the problem? A UI should be a result of data that already exists that it just has to send down a network port, and whatever processor that powers it is at least a decade newer than the processing the X18 - I can tell you from my work, the processing is way more impressive it was a decade ago. And power consumption, I can't think how that would be changed but unless it has an eco mode I am not sure why that would be a consideration on a mains powered device.
  6. Seems an odd choice to make - when gigging I flip backwards and forwards between the X-Air screen and my set list app on my iPad all the time. It would be a pain to have to reconnect to a mixer when i did that (in fact it would be a non starter)
  7. I buy mine from batterystation.co.uk, they were £11.49 for 10, so that seems like the going price. I like the little caps, makes it handier to throw in the bag!
  8. I agree, While I think the new site is fine, the emails used to be a list of what was available in 4 / 5 / 6 string in price bands, whcih worked for me perfectly. Now it is pictures, I can't see either the price or how many strings it has on a tiny thumbnail, so not so handy.
  9. I put a *shim in before the gig last night and it worked out perfect. Action is good now. *shim - ie, a bit of a plastic tub that got broken that my wife had delivered, cut a bit out, loosened the neck off and dropped it in, perfect size!
  10. OK, todays posting seems to go to the correct place, except some of them go through facebook, so I guess if you don't have facebook that might not work!
  11. It was, thanks, although the surprise I wasn't expecting is that lit up basses actually attract flying biting insects outside!
  12. Every year or so I remember to check the batteries on my actives, and if any are low I will replace them. It isn't that common, but it means I will often be spending upwards of £3-4 every year on batteries! I carry a spare PP3 in my kit. I have used it twice - once for a guitarists effects pedal, once for the drummers light control. Haven't used it on a bass yet. The only time one did die in a show was the wrongo, and I thought it would be ok as I had replaced it the week earlier, but turns out it was wired to not switch off, so it had been just wired on since I put it in.
  13. Private festival yesterday - very well attended, I think it is private just so that they can save on the public insurance while still inviting everyone! There were two 'stages', ie flatbed trailers with haybales in front of them, like this: and it went on from about 3:30 until we stopped at ¼ to 12, but people were staying there in big premade tents and a couple of motorhomes / vans. There were two bands before us, a guy on a piano doing really impressive covers of large band songs, and a group of people doing general covers in a sort of hilbilly style. We were supposed to start at 8:30, but even though we were setup and ready by 7:30, the middle band just carried on until 8:25 which meant we had practically no time to get sound setup, other than line checks. Still when we went on it was good, although I was playing the bongo, and I couldn;t see the fretmarkers at all, so made some silly mistakes, and also while the sound was good at the front, the bass where i was was deafening, probably because of standing on the same bit of metal as all the cabs (but the guitarist couldn't hear the bass at all). Switched to the acrylic bass, as at least I could then see, sound not as good but overall the image was better. Went down a storm with people dancing all night, and really wanting us to not stop, and paid pretty well too.
  14. At the point you notice some signal degredation I guess - it would depend on the bass, but seems like people are worried about batteries so I guess it must happen to them a lot.
  15. Yes, rechargeables are fine if you have a problem with buying batteries. Except they don't last as long and you have to remember when to charge them.
  16. I do although there is a tinge of sadness with the lack of some familiar faces. Still, its going to be good to catch up again
  17. Ooh - sounds like a plan. It would work fine on 90% of active basses, and burn out the preamp of the other 10%. Remember there is no standard on which way round the wiring needs to be, even between manufacturers. Still, a great way of saving £2* at only a slight risk of costing a few hundred! *or less - just got 10 duracell power batteries for £11.49 from battery station.
  18. Yep, mine will be there. I will put a resistor to the neck circuit (obviously no idea what is going on in there, there are leds at 3, 5, 7, 9, 12x2, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24x2 so 12 leds in total. The ones in the body are series, but I will probably put some kind of circuit to make them do something more interesting (and maybe add a few) String spacing is a bit wide for my liking, a bridge is a bridge and the pickups, although they are low level sound ok. Yeh, strings not great but I played it live straight out of the packet so it will be better when I can actually adjust it!
  19. Effectively - they are two unrelated circuits, so they are just connected to the battery via the switch
  20. Get you with your fancy measuring - I always just lobbed something in and see how it went! I had a look at the LEDs in the body, it is just 6 LEDs wired with their leads in series, with a 9v battery across. I would prefer a less direct light, so thinking of putting some LEDs behind the pickups and bridge, where they can light up the back. and maybe turning the leds on the neck down a little bit!
  21. My action was high and the relief was none, although I still gigged it and it sounded fine. I did the neck releif but there is no way the action is going down without a shim so I need to do that. then I think I will do something about the LEDs, I might replace the bottom LEDs with multicolour ones and have a bit more of a sound to light thing going on. i mean, if we are going for tacky here, might as well go the whole way! The drummer was impressed, but then he has a green acrylic drum kit, so the only dissapointment was that it wasn't green LEDs!
  22. so what he says is that he is dissapointed that the Mike Kerr Sig jaguar he got doesn't sound like he wants it to sound unless he adds some compression or distortion, like, err.. Mike Kerr?
