A question for bassist who smoke cigarettes and cigars!
Woodinblack replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
I used to smoke and play at the same time back when I smoked a few decades ago, but yes, the smoke would get to the point of stinging your eyes, and as a guitarist at the time it would always need disposing of at the wrong times, so I tried to avoid it as much as possible! -

Back on ham hill after a month. A bit different this time. The last time we went was with our replacement guitarist who left and this time it is with our old guitarist that came back. Although the last one should have been better, he is a better guitarist, it was warmer etc, this one just seemed to be better, everything gelled, I played well, it sounded better so no idea. Maybe it was just after we heard he was leaving, so there was a bit of a worry. However the crowd seemed better, maybe last time was just too hot, there was a lot more dancing and engagement right from the start. Played the bongo - really like that bass, plays well, used the dwarf, again, works well, especially having the synths in the board too, all on the new HB rocketship pedalboard which is smaller than the previous one (wish I got the metal case now!), everything seems to be going well, noone complained about the sound at all. Shame that it was the last time I decided to record and video rather than this time. Still, got sent a few short crowd videos.

I generally do the under over twist, it seems to work best

75dB? I am sure the backbeat can break that on its own! my IEM is not connected to the backbeat
-
COmbination of A or D depending on how fast we leave. However, if I am not careful the singer will wrap them and he uses E - C then tie in its own knot
-
I must admit that I don't really use my back beat much any more - Maybe it would work if I had no backline at all, but generally I can hear stuff fine

Light Rope - something to decorate your stage!
Woodinblack replied to Woodinblack's topic in General Discussion
No, this is from eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353236354640?var=622435691837 there are a lot of sellers selling the same thing and I am sure you can get it from other places too -
Light Rope - something to decorate your stage!
Woodinblack replied to Woodinblack's topic in General Discussion
Certainly a option, but as I am going to have to put a back on it anyway, I would need two grooves, and the 2040 stuff gets a bit expensive fast -
Hmm - is that your plug or theirs? Wouldn't like to see that going into an ibby SR!

Light Rope - something to decorate your stage!
Woodinblack replied to Woodinblack's topic in General Discussion
Yes, there is all sorts of colours, as well as the colour changing stuff. I suspect there would be individually addressable too, but at a big price hike. Ultimately the stuff is the normal LED strips in a silicon sleve of the same colour, so the options should be quite wide. I was surprised at how good it was in tight corners (and impressed with the gorilla glue for the same thing. The first youtube video I saw the guy doing it used pliers to really pinch the edges and they held fine. The youtube video I saw the guy also used end clips to connect to the cable, which are obviously cleaner, but I didn't have any and was too lazy to search for them, so I just soldered directly to the LED strips which even with my shakey hands these days, was pretty easy. -

Currently it looks like this so needs some tidying. I will probably run the white leads along the backs of the letters to near the edge - I haven't decided on a backing, my wife things I should use mirrored acrylic, which is an option. I do need a frame or something to both hang it on and give it strength to not bend, not sure what to make that of yet! -

Yes, its on clear acrylic. The wiring isn't very tidy at the moment, I have just temporarily wired it up (as I was getting a little tired by the time I finished it) - I need to neeten it up and also work out how to make a frame or something to give it a bit of strength so I can take it to gigs. It will eventually have a little power connector to connect to a 12V psu (I have several of them. It should take about 1.5A at 12v, altjhough in that picture it is running at about 10v at 1a as my bench PSU is actually current limiting -
I was in tesco a while back and there was a flamingo lamp, we got it as we have a friend that loves flamingo stuff. I noticed it was just an outline channel of a flamingo and some lit pvc rope with pink lights in it. Wondered if that was common so trotted off to ebay and sure enough, tons of light rope there in lots of colours. Wonder if I can make a sign with this - trot off to youtube, and sure enough, people making signs (isn't the internet great). So as green is sort of my bands colour, I bought 5M of green rope, which is just over a tenner - like this: , I had some plastic sheet, so cut that down to 60cm by about 30, did a scrolly font on a piece of paper, got some gorilla glue (great stuff) and wired it all up on the plastic. Probably joined more letters than I should as I didn't want to have a million wires, and there is a dead led at the end of the r underline. Its not perfect, but it occupies a place between incredibly naff and absolutely awesome, but I am pretty happy with it! The first L is a bit squiffy - you literally have seconds with that glue before it sticks and I left it too long. in fact the ls are a bit too loose, but I am ok with that. Not sure what to put on the back, but next night gig, this is coming with me!

Compact mixing desks - what are you using?
Woodinblack replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
So basically just really not much except for newer hardware -
The HX Stomp requires 9v dc but over an amp, I could power one of a vitos 8 but sometimes it just died, so I kept the original PSU around for times when it didn't work. But now I have the dwarf and that runs off a single output, so all good. However, I think the HB rocketboard power supplies provide enough power for one.

Probably because it isn't far to drive to LA and it isn't anywhere like as crowded. Big open streets, so stupidly hot and empty though, have to clear the sand off the road all the time. One of those places where if you didn't keep cleaning it for a few weeks, it would be taken back by the desert. However, convenient location if you have a body to dispose of, a few minutes into the desert, back in time for dinner.

How do we get ourselves and our rigs to rehearsals or gigs?
Woodinblack replied to kwmlondon's topic in General Discussion
Although I need a car due to carrying the PA, if there were places in town that had their own PA and equipment, then I could walk to a lot of our gigs (although not as many as there used to be locally). -
I don't know how palm springs is based on the desert scene or where that comes from, or how it relates to QotSA (who formed in Seatle), although it is fair to say that whatever the size of palm springs is (as above), it is a long strip with a desert either side, so you can pretty well get to some bit of the desert in a few minutes from pretty well anywhere.

What do you play at soundcheck?
Woodinblack replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
Money for nothing for the sax and guitar, brick in the wall for keys. -
Depends obviously how many years - before some nameless large political event in the middle of the last decade things didn't need to clear customs, so it was a lot easier and smoother.

What makes a successful gig for you?

Sadly I carry on staring moodily at the audience and I am in a covers band!
