Compact mixing desks - what are you using?
Woodinblack replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
Probably a wise move - I don't take a backup for the mixer, its probably the only thing I trust! -

If you are almost at the limit of what something has it would certainly put me off buying it - you are always going to find a situation that needs more than you have. That is why I also have an XR16 sitting down there! -

Yes, we do the outdoor gig about 4 times a year, and then a couple of other villiage fete type things that we do the drums for. Plus when we do that I record off the desk to multitrack, only time I can really record with good sound -
Wireless system - any 100% reliable long term reports?
Woodinblack replied to a topic in Accessories and Misc
Never actually had a problem with a wireless system, although I have always had a backup. Also no to tone colouration, or at least not as much as a system with a cable. So for me, yes, I have used 2 100% reliable wireless systems. -
Its hard when you get to your mid 30s to realise that you are considered pensioners to people in their early 20s, the same as people who were in their mid 30s were to you when you were 20! I have seen Royal Blood several times, and they were good and did a good set, but he can sure rant on about the audience not appreciating them enough. I guess the way down is going to be hard.

I have controlled the X18 over midi briefly when I had a different surface. There is also a standalone project for that (interfacing various surfaces with the mixer), but sort of stopped that when i got the X_Touch. -

I was aware of it and like the look of it and also like the fact they actually put a decent router in it. We had a conversation about it a while ago, I am sure it is good, although for me the lack of XLR / jack flexibility / mic inputs would be a deal breaker for me so I haven't looked that much into it. Occasionally, very occasionally for big things we have been known to mic the drums up, at that point we need 12 mic XLR inputs. -

I don't have any zoom things with built in PSU so I don't know, but I mean, if they don't work you notice it straight away! -

Nothing to do with noise reduction, it is just for cost. If it was built in any noise issue would be already dealt with. Also not really more maintainable really, unless there are a number of similar supplies, but if they can pass the cost on to the user that is good (and I note here that that mixer is cheaper, so you would expect cost savings). When I am gigging, if there are two almost functionally identical items but one has a separate power supply, I will buy the one built in psu every time - I can deal with the power supply needing replacement, because, lets face it, that never happens compared to people jumping on the external PSU. Unfortunately most modern synths have an external supply. -

Oh thats a shame - it seems a good well thought out unit, why can't they put a proper cable into it rather than a power supply - work of the devil when gigging? -
So if you think someone else is not doing the grown up debate and trying to provoke a fight, why don't you do the grown up thing and ignore it and move on?

Yes, the Xair has the spectrum, but you can switch it on on the EQ panel, so you can see what you are eq'ing against, like if there is some feedback or something a bit peaky you can actually see it compared to the eq line. I have used it to kill a specific feedback frequency as the two line up. -

I just change the gain at setup time from the mic'd guitar, its always different plus as you say, a compressor. Luckily the guitarists dont' tend to fiddle too much. The last one was too loud, so I turned his down, the current one is too quiet (? I know, is he even a real guitarist!) so I turn him up. -

looks good but can you not see the eq panel with the Spectrum view behind it? That to me is pretty invaluable at getting rid of odd spikes -

That is what I got it for, but I must admit that I have the x-touch just for edits on the fly with levels, but it sits on top of my amp when I am playing, so it doesn't really take up any other space (it is the same footprint as an ABM600! When you are setting up it is just easier to wander out with an iPad to get the levels -

Mixing station I find is much better for customising, but not as good for 'seeing everything at once'. I started like that but I do put guitars though the PA, mainly because I think it beefs stuff up, its easy to adjust and also it means that I can hear it in ears, which I use (as does the drummer). Same with the paying - I know there are ways etc, but the pa stuff is all mine, that way there is no hassle with ownership. -

that's what I meant when I said X-Control, I always forget its name! Mine are all wireless to a common router anyway, so no additional wiring really (ie, the X-Control USB puts out enough power to power a little router for the ethernet! -

Yes, sadly it falls over bigtime on the latest iOS (I have an iPad that I used that isn't updated*). Mixing station works pretty well, a lot of people prefer it (I never really got into it but I have it in case of problems, like when I forgot my iPad, it works on the phone as well). The new app is started and should be ready some point soon. * I did but it died the other day - so I used my current iPad this gig and it failed a lot, but it was ok as I have a X-Control too. -
Played in a local pub last night, was well attended considering there was a live event nearby. I hadn't actually touched a bass in 3 weeks as I had been on holiday and my fingers show it today! Sadly our guitarist who we got in December who fits in well and is excellent has announced he is leaving due to work commitments, so that means we have to begin the whole new guitarist thing, so that is most of our busy months going to be wasted again which put a damper on it, especially as we played really well last night.
