1. Hmm, that description could almost be my band: "Inside The Circle is an exciting 4-piece rock originals band, comprising of catchy lyrics, beautifully powerful female vocals, thrilling guitar, pumping basslines and a drummer with a spectacular beard."
2. If you want a hardware unit, then the Alesis SR-16 is an excellent bet. It was in production for an astonishing 13 years, and is readily available second hand. Cheaper still is the little Boss DR-550, which is slightly less featured than the Alesis but even simpler to program (I personally prefer the sounds on the Boss as well).
3. Google an application called Hydrogen. It's open source (free in other words), and works on Windows, OS-X or Linux. It's very simple to program, as it uses a simple grid. It comes with some excellent drum kits covering both acoustic and electronic sounds.
4. +1 on the idea of Ronson headlining instead of FatM. Not my kind of thing, but he certainly put on a show.
5. Lemmy and Peter Hook are my two all time favourite bassists. Both highly unconventional and unique. Painful to see how frail he now looks, and he was clearly struggling vocally. Still playing bass like no one else on earth though - amazing to hear how much of it is him when Phil Campbell stops playing.
6. Theme from World At War. Walked on stage to this at one gig and proceeeded to play the most agressive set I've ever done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAvt8AewEBs
7. Their videos seem to be by and for people who principally play finger style or slap. Nothing wrong with that, but it means someone like me who plays solely with a pick doesn't get any idea of the sound of a particular bass. Same goes for the only bass guitar show I've ever been to - i came away with a headache after half an hour as everyone seemed to be playing Level 42 basslines.
8. What I don't understand about the waiting list, is surely they wouldn't be in stock anywhere if customers are waiting for them, but I see them in stock all over the place. My local shop in High Barnet had one last year, and when I asked about it the owner said he'd ordered it in on a whim to see if it would sell. No waiting, it came straight from the distributor. It sat there unsold for months, as it was a dog to play.
9.
That it does... if you use one of the output sockets you get all four strings in mono. You get the split if you use both sockets. I'm not sure why you'd want to bi-amp E+A and D+G strings separately though, it doesn't make much sense to me.
The only application I could think of was to apply chorus to just the D and G strings. That way I could play Peter Hook style high bass parts on those strings, but still get a clear bassy sound out of the E and A.
10. Had a white one of these as a loaner for a while. Great to play. I seem to recall that the "stereo" was different to the Rickenbacker kind in that it split the outputs into one for the E and A strings and the other one for the D and G strings.
11. The contract thing reminds me of some local pubs I played as a teenager. These pubs would provide a contract that required you to basically sell the place out in advance to stand a chance of getting paid, and had rules on behaviour so draconian that they could always wriggle out of paying on even the most busy nights. What that hadn't considered was that our entourage was a bunch of students and ne'er do wells who promptly occupied one pub until we were paid. A local copper arrived at one point and actually sided with us since we were causing no trouble (and I doubt he fancied taking on 50 odd punks, crusties and goths).
12. discreet - modern Ampeg SVTs are made in the far East. My SVT CL was made in Vietnam, and didn't have the fit and finish I've seen on the older US made ones.
13. The notion of tonewoods has been comprehensively proven to be bollocks in the violin world, where we're talking about an acoustic instrument so these threads about electrically amplified bass guitars amuse me no end.
14. That poor old Aria is going to take some serious work to bring back into shape. If you want a cheap option for the tuners, there is a Chinese brand call "Ping" that make a set of two-a-side closed machine heads that look very close to the ones found on lots of Japanese fakers. If you search on eBay, they're normally available. For a truss rod cover I'd recommend joining the Rickenfakers Facebook group (link available on my website here http://www.rickenfaker.info/). There is a member of that group who makes truss rod covers, and a bunch of people who can help out with good advice (including Mr Bassassin from this neck of the woods).
15. It's quite cool, but not up there with the Duesenberg Outlaw
16. Every time I see Jools' show I'm reminded of this:
17.
Double thumbing
That's my preferred technique for getting the last few drops out after a Gypsy's Kiss. Much more hygienic than giving him a shake.
18. I forgot to post pics of my Greco when I got it last year. It currently alternates with a Jolana D-Bass as my preferred bass - the Jolana is slightly nicer to play, but the Greco wins the beauty contest.
19. Seriously underrated gear Peavey. Had a Mk III head and 1820 cabinet for most of the 1990s, and it was a great sounding, ultra reliable rig. When my SVT was in for repair, the Bass Gallery gave me a Mk IV as a loaner on the basis they'd buy it back off me for the same I paid them as long as it was in the same condition. I considered hanging onto it as a back up. Now you can pick up utter bargains such as an 1810 cab (older version of the 1820) for £50 on eBay!
20. It's one of those annoying phrases the permeate eBay listings. My pet hate is "minty", which seems to originate with Septics that don't know why it's supposed to be "mint" and assume it's a contraction of "minty fresh".
21. I think I may have posted about my irrational dislike of all things Yamaha having suffered the horrible sounds and lack of a decent interface on their FM synthesisers. Unfortunate really, as I tried a BB series bass recently and it was a wonderful instrument.
22.
Spandau Ballet
It's from the spasms of a man during hanging - from the Spandau prison in Berlin. I think Tony Hadley is something of a history buff, which shows in the lyrics of "To Cut A Long Story Short" which describe a soldier losing his mind in the first world war. (Edited to admit their debut album is something of a guilty pleasure - once they started wearing sensible clothes they went totally mince though).
