1. What makes someone a pro? Normally they've a drug habit to pay for, or they're pressured into it by an abusive partner. We are talking about prostitutes aren't we?
2.
I used to have a Vox 2x18. It looked like the Super Foundation but I remember it being more red than brown and it had a big metal rig thing over the top that acted as a handle and something to clamp the amp (which I didn't have) onto. If it wasn't the Super Foundation (and I am inclined to think it wasn't but my memory might well be playing tricks on me), any idea what it might have actually been?
The only 2x18" Vox cabinet that I'm aware of is the Super Foundation. I think there was also a possibly ported 1x18" in the same size cabinet, and a 2x15" with similar proportions but in a slightly smaller case. A couple of years ago I almost managed to win an eBay auction for an empty Super Foundation, and was then also outbid at the last minute on a WEM 2x18".
I had to leave it at home when I moved out. Although, thinking about how much trouble I had finding somewhere else to live, I could have just moved into the cab... Shame to be talking about it in the past tense, but it probably ended up on a bonfire or at the tip, like all the rest of the stuff I had to leave behind.
Sorry to hear that you had to part with it. I still miss my V125 Vox cabinet that I used with a Simms-Watts AP100. It was a wide cabinet with a large port and a single 15" speaker with a blue painted frame. My love for 18" speakers came after that, as I replaced the V125 with a brand new Peavey 1820, which I had to special order from the States. Then I recently discovered there was a Peavey 3620 - two 18" and two 10" speakers in a single enormous cabinet! One failed to sell on eBay a month or so ago - not unsurprisingly as it was collection only from someone quite remote.
3. Impressed that someone from Ashdown has taken the time to come on here and defend their product, but sorry, having suffered your amps in most London rehears studios in recent years you're fighting a losing battle. A few big names may use your gear, but they must be getting them as endorsements, since I'd rather use Peavey cabs and Behringer heads given the choice (and I use them as examples since they seem to be the only alternative in London). Plus, I know the bass tech for one of those names mentioned, so I know in that specific case your gear's only used since he's endorsed by you.
4.
Looks good. Are you going to kit it out with the Vox grille cloth to match your old one? I like that stuff. If you find a reasonably priced source for the cloth, please post a link here!
Still looking for someone who isn't charging a fortune for the cloth, but it's definitely going to have the proper brown diamond stuff. The basket weave tolex is quite hard to get hold of as well - North Coast Music in the US wont ship it out of the US, but there is a company in Germany that have some.
5. Fitted the correct style of jack socket and mounting plate (courtesy of the excellent Solsounds in Potters Bar), so I decided to compare with the original cabinet. I couldn't hear any differences tonally, so I'm very happy. Then decided to connect both speaker cabinets in parallel, having doubled checked the phases match by using the 9v batter trick. Perhaps because of the change in amplifier impedance, it sounded much punchier. Anyone whos says that 18" drivers sound woolly or muffled needs to hear this rig!
6.
Old men and hair has always perplexed me. See, girls who colour their locks have it done in textures and layers and subtle changes of shade here and there. Now, I guess this guy has money - so why did he have such a crap job done all in a colour that doesn't exist in nature? And don't get me started on old blokes with pony tails.
Get back in the kitchen and make my tea. ... And if you don't get the sarcasm, I'm implying your comment is sexist.
7. Very dodgy company - if you read the music dealer press publications and comments from suppliers, DV247 went into a "flat pack" administration, shafting a lot of employees, customers and suppliers. Lo and behold, the company was reformed overnight with all stock shifted to Germany.
8. The only really decent bit on a Kay K-20B is the pickups (I should know, I've owned three of the strange creatures). The neck is prone to twisting and the bridge is only remarkable for its extreme crudity. He'd have been better off junking the Squier or finding the correct neck for it.
9. The fella in the pictures has absolutely terrible tattoos on his right arm, regardless of who he is.
10. Today was day seven. Then something disastrous happened - I had to speak to one of my neighbours, and it was explained to me by my better half that I look intimidating enough even without the face fungus. So sadly the following picture was just before I razored it all off :-(
11. More progress! The baffle is now finished in matte black spray paint, the driver is mounted and the baffle fixed in place with black anodised screws and wood glue. The back panel is secured with the same type of antique brass coloured screws and cups as used on original cab. The corners still need rounding off, but no urgency as the Tolex still hasn't arrived from the States.
12. Until a year ago, it was Stingray with single humbucker and three band active into Ampeg SVT CL, 4X10 and 1x15. I was nostalgic for my old Simms-Watts head, so I bought a similarly designed SoundcCity L120, and it was way punchier than the SVT. I also use a pair of Vox Foundation 18" cabs (one a copy) as I used to couple the Simms-Watts with a Peavey 1820 cab. This is for industrial / Gothic metal.
13.
Is that a reverse goatee?
"Friendly mutton chops" apparently, and pretty much the opposite of the neck beard favoured by many in my line of work (software engineering - although I've never understood how it can be classed as engineering, if civil engineers created buildings like most of the software I see then they'd all fall down).
14.
What did we do so wrong?
Wait until you see the warts I'm genetically engineering in my [s]garden shed[/s] laboratory.
15.
The best I've ever received was a bass from ebay, the seller just put it in a single black bin bag and taped the top shut round the headstock. How it wasn't damaged I'll never know.
I had a synthesiser sent to me with similar packaging. A sheet of cardboard had been taped to the bottom, then it had been placed in a black bin bag and taped shut.
16.
Put a shirt on.
Think yourself lucky I cropped the picture, otherwise you'd be able to see my peek-hole bra, PVC mini skirt and stripy pop socks.
17. I have to remove my wedding ring when playing as I catch it on the strings (particularly with round wounds). I keep on meaning to get a short silver chain so I can hang the ring around my neck when playing.
18. New Beard Day, although it's got a way to go yet ... And the inspiration :-)
19.
Bloody hell! Beffnull Gween? That area really is turning into Hipster Central ...
Blimey, it must be. Used to rehearse over there at a place in a converted basement garage between 1998 and 2000. Great rehearsal studio owned by a friend of one of the guitarists in the band, although last time I went back a few years ago they had stopped making food :-( No more sausage sandwiches halfway through a marathon session!
20. Finally made some further progress, thanks to a router owning colleague. The speaker hole is now finished, so I can now move onto spraying the baffle matte black and mounting the speaker. The edges of the cabinet still need rounding off with the router, but then it will be Tolex time! Here's the marked out speaker hole just prior to routing: Here's Dante inspecting the fit and finish: (As suggested by my wife, my next project will be two 1x12 cabinets that I can make into novelty beds for both our cats). And here's what the complete rig looks like so far:
21. Most expensive bass I've owned is a Musicman Stingray. I loved it, taking great care to clean it after every gig no matter how drunk I was, and it regularly got a setup at a decent music shop. However, for the 50 to 60 minutes I was on stage it got covered in sweat, beer and on one occasion blood while I hacked away at it with a steel tipped pick. After all, that's what it was as designed for.
22. British made bass from the 1970s. Evolved into the Shergold Marathon, which was a great bass, quite sought after by those who know about them. I had one on loan for a while and absolutely loved it.
23. Nice of Alice Cooper to pose for that shot. That's a terrible tattoo on his chest though.
24.
I could say "Serves you right for not using real live musicians in the band", but I won't......................... Runs away at the speed of light ..............
They'd need to be able to play at the speed of light to do some of the synth bass parts.
25. Had a bad experience where the house engineer got blotto the night before we played, and he hadn't noticed that someone had pinched most of the DI boxes. He had a few old DI boxes, but had to reuse them for each band. Come our set, he plugs our rack of synths and samplers into them - only problem is that he left them on the Mic impedance setting rather than switch them over to Line. No line check, and as we start our set I can't hear the drums or keyboards as the engineer yanked their levels down since the output was so distorted. Audience look perplexed as well. I ended up playing the whole set looking at the blinking metronome on the sequencer since the engineer was too useless to realise what he'd done. Thankfully the venue sacked him shortly afterwards.
