The one in Kirsty MacColl's My Affair . I can't remember who played it, I did find out but as it wasn't anybody I'd ever heard of, I promptly forgot it.

GAS = Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. This forum is deeply infected with it. It's very contagious and usually incurable in the long term.

£50 and a bit of soldering will get you a pretty decent bass, better than you had before. However, if you want to buy a new bass, and have the money to do it, then buy a new bass. Sounds like you have GAS to me, and there is only one cure ( and that is probably only temporary ) Alternatively, do both, and have a spare. I was in a pretty similar situation myself, I was going to upgrade my Squier, then joined this forum, and caught GAS. Ended up with a MIJ P, which I'm really pleased with. Sold the Squier to my nephew, but I wish I'd kept as backup.

Jap Fenders: who's the guy to buy new ones from?
chrisba replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Anyone know if Guitar Emporium are still in business. I've tried phoning both numbers and emailing but had no luck?
The web site has been recently updated, there were no prices a couple of weeks back. It's a one-man outfit, so keep trying. ( from a happy customer ) -

This guy did some great band shots for some friends recently... http://basingstokephoto.com/About.html

We do "All the things i've done" in our set. Bass line is simple and metronomic but prominent. Following Bill Bailey's lead, the "I've got Soul but I'm not a soldier" line gets changed at every gig...
As a beginner18months ago I got a Tanglewood acoustic bass for those very same reasons but found it more dificult to learn on because of the depth of the body. Just athought and something to think about. Try before you buy if you can.
+1 for that. I have played a couple of acoustic basses, and they are very awkward to hold , and don't make enough sound to do anything but play in your own house. Waste of time IMHO.

Who's bought from MIJFenders or similar?
chrisba replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
I'd recommend the Guitar Emporium, I've been in touch with them in the past regarding MIJ basses and they've been very helpful.
Another +1 . I don't think he keeps stock any more though, just imports to order, but obviously you'll have to talk to Malcolm. Nice guy to deal with. -
marine expoy would be good. ... Bought some yacht varnish from Wilkinsons for £3.49 - should do the job.
Yacht varnish isn't normally epoxy, by default it would be polyurethane. Epoxy would be two part ( i.e comes in two separate packs that need to be mixed) , and would say epoxy explicitly on the tin. Great stuff - lasts forever, even outdoors. Trust me, I've varnished a few yachts in my time, including the one in my avatar ( although that's mainly fibre-glass and carbon )

I wish I could have been there. My Mum is a huge fan of the late, lamented, Jake, dating back to his days on TV ( Was it Bradon's Week or similar - something in black and white after my bedtime). I recently borrowed her "Jake in a Box" collection and listened to the whole thing. Bought back lots of memories. Most of the more serious songs don't really work for me ( Lah-di-dah is an exception ), and some of them are badly overproduced with inappropriate orchestral backing. Hopefully you won't be guilty of that as a trio ! He was a great guitarist as well as a clever songwriter. My favourites are "Isobel makes love on national monuments", The Cactus and The Statues. Do let us know when you are next performing.
1 4 5 are the first fourth and fifth notes in the scale. In G that is G C and D.
1 4 & 5 are the most common chords used in rock, and in traditional blues, just about the only ones. I heard somebody once referring to a guitarist as "not very good, just a 1-4-5 man"

What colour scratchplate on a vintage white P bass
chrisba replied to boabskiboab's topic in Bass Guitars
To me, tort and/or pearloid scratchplates on basses are like sparkly jackets on comedians; tacky, dated and rather more "London Palladium" than "Carnegie Hall". Don't ask me why.
+1 I think bright clean white would look good, and emphasise the off-whiteness of the body. -
We're doing a couple of beer festivals and our village music festival, but seeing as he rest of our band organise the latter, we decide who plays. It's is on a "no-publicity" embargo at the moment, but more news later.

I have one of these too. I had to learn about 30 songs when I joined a covers band this time last year, and couldn't have managed without it. The user interface is a bit dated and not entirely intuitive, but that's my only real criticism.

I tried switching from left hand to right for playing golf, as cheap LH clubs were hard to come by. Gave up trying pretty quick though. Play bass and write right handed though. I took up golf leftwards because I always played Cricket that way round. Don't know why, but there is a photo of me doing it aged about 4. Quite common really.
like what? indulge me!
1 - When I got in the car to go to the gig, I said "Hasn't it been a lovely day". At that moment, the driver turned the radio on, and the Radio 4 weather girl said "It's going to be a nice one tomorrow, as well" 2 - I found out our guitarist and I both knew Jacqui Dankworth when we were younger ( in my case, much younger ), 3 - Someone we took along for the ride turned out to know lots of the people at the party, even though we were miles from home, and had no connection with them at all 4 - On a previous occasion, our after-gig kebab shop visit was enhanced by the appearance of a drunken pirate. While waiting for the aforementioned ambulance to arrive, one of the band said "I'd rather we had another pirate, instead". A few minutes later, a pirate walked past us, complete with blood stained shirt - we weren't sure if it was real or fake, and weren't going to ask

Nice pub gig for the landlords father's 70th birthday. Big crowd, during our first set they seemed to be chatting amongst themselves, but in the second half, the younger set detached from the main group and started singing and dancing along and screaming for encore after encore. The publishers of the local gig guide were there, and said they could get us loads more of the same if we wanted. Curious incident outside the kebab shop afterwards with a drunken teenager having a fit, paramedic attending quickly but it took 30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. She seemed OK though as they wheeled her away. Kebabs were good. A spooky number of strange co-incidences throughout the evening.

We do the James song ( easy - E A B all the way through ) and Dakota, which currently seems to be our closing, give-everybody-in-the-band-a-namecheck number. Not hard either, but I need to work out a very short solo in the repeat-to-fade bit, for when the singer says "...and Chris on bass...". If you have any ideas...
Haha I love Tomita...never known anyone else who's ever even heard of them, never mind listened to them. laugh.gif
I've got one of his albums stashed away somwhere. Stravinsky's Firebird and other classical stuff. About the same time as Walter ( later Wendy ) Carlos and his Switched on Bach, which I adored at the time.

Love me like you, bytthe Magic Numbers. A bit of a pig to learn, and I ended up simplifying it a lot.
This is a little more expensive, but I would be lost without my Korg Pandora around £99 the last time I looked, the guitar/bass model has loads of useful effects, incl the option to jam along with cd's or mp3 via an aux input together with a bass cancelling option to cut the bass line from the aux input so you can play your own bassline over the top of your chosen track (hope that makes sense),versatile piece of kit well worth the expense, mike b.
Or the Tascam MP-BT1, which has about 2GB(??) of memory for MP3's to play along to, speed up, slow down, transpose key etc. More detail here £100 ish

Wishbone Ash, Argus. Heard Fleet Foxes, Mykonos, earlier and tried to find who it was they reminded me of. Got it right first time.

Doesn't look like English or American White Oak to me. Really nice though. Like the others said, oak is way heavier than Alder or other common materials.

I think the album version has a kind of late-night live performance feel to it, not studio tight. If I heard it played exactly like that after midnight in a smoky bar, I'd have been blown away. Not perfect, just music. About as tight as <what's the opposite of a gnat's chuff ?>
