1.
Broncos make a great base for modding, ditch the tuners and the bridge and stick any pickup you like in there. Here is mine.
Nice. I like what you've done. What do you do about the bridge, aren't standard bridges too wide?
2.
Here's that pickup, less than a tenner: https://www.amazon.c...duct/B013SBRB2W
That's a really helpful reply, thanks Dannybuoy! I've ordered the pickup. Hey, Nancy, do you know if I can still get a Mustang bridge? - I can't find one anywhere.
3. Thanks for the comments. I think the pots are 500s, is it worth changing them to 250s?
4. I have recently acquired a Squier Bronco. Being a short scale it is very easy to play. Surprisingly it also sounds fairly good despite the fact that it has a strat' sized, 6 pole guitar pick up and cheep Alpha pots. I'm wondering what it would take to improve it? So, new pickup, new pots/wiring? I would love to hear your opinions/advice.
5. Andertons are going crazy; stocking all sorts of new lines including Warwick, Spector, Musicman and even Chowny as well as Sire! They're certainly making the effort; much better than when I went last year when the basses were relegated to one small room.
6. Here are some of my Squire Affinity Precision.
7. I also have the same one, got it New in 2011, changed the pick guard as well. It's my benchmark / others come and go, but this is staying put!
8.
You know the drill. Pics or it didn't happen...
Here she is:
9.
Yup, never played a duff new EBMM. Loved my EBMM Sterling too, but constantly surprised by how many weigh as much ( or even more ) than an EBMM Stingray, despite the smaller dimensions. If anybody has a really light one, please let me know....
Impulse buy and I seem to have got a new EBMM Sterling! Happy with it though and a very reasonable 8.5lbs which makes it my lightest bass, just a little less than my Classic 50's P.
10. I play the Lakland Darryl Jones (5 string jazz). It's a very nice. Guess it depends on the price range?
11. I was disappointed when I wanted to buy a bass there last year. All the basses were kept on display in one of the sound rooms; none on the main shop floor. I wanted to try a few, but they were having a staff meeting in the room with all the basses, so the assistant had to keep going in to drag another one off the wall for me to try. I gave up after two, brought nothing and left after a short time having driven an hour to get there. I felt the basses were very much the poor relation. Glad they're ramping it up, perhaps they've realised the error of their ways? It'll be good to see a range of Spector basses which I understand they are now stocking.
12. I can't comment on the Roger Waters model, but I have the classic 50s and that weighs in at 8.8lbs so not far off what you've said. . Very nice bass it is to, it is my bench mark that all the others have to meet and it has yet to be bettered!
13. I had a Mustang to, the Jap version, so very much like the originals. I really liked it; wish I still had it. Definitely got some P bass DNA. Mine was easy to play, fast, Jazz width neck. You need medium scale strings if you have the through body bridge (I brought short scale and they didn't fit). Personally I preferred round wound for what I do. It sat in the band mix just right (like a P bass). Great bass and I only moved mine on because at 6"6' I felt a bit silly playing something that small. Having said that, it's still bigger than a guitar, so probably looked fine and I was being self conscious.
14.
When i had my SR5 i used it through a TE stack 12 band 300W head in to 2x10+H + 1x15. It had a sound capable to move mountains but it also could be a bit muddy in the lows if i boosted them just a bit. In the end i let go of this setup and moved to other kit that had my sound straight out of the box. It was one of the prettiest and better built basses i've owned and it pains me to have let it go but in the end of the day i know it would just sit pretty on the wall hanger most of the times. Here's the rig: Looks really nice; I feel your pain, but seems you got an even better set up subsequently?

Ive tried Markbass and Barefaced but ended up choosing EBS and I haven looked back loved the warm vintage tone that compliments the Stingray tone perfectly IMO
That's good to know. I had not thought of EBS. Thanks guys
15.
I've had four Stingrays. Every time, I'd hear/see other people playing them and think 'Yeeeaaahhhh', then I'd buy one and...it just wasn't me. So I'd sell it, then a few months later I'd want one again. Took me four goes to finally realise I just don't suit them (or vice versa). That's across lots of different rigs, too, so it wasn't that... Edit: what Chris just said, above
Sounds like me! Like you say, I like the Stingray sound in other people's hands; and I don't see why I can't get something similar. My logic was if its not the bass it must be the amp. Perhaps it's just that Rays don't work with my playing style (although I don't see why not). Who knows eh!
16. Really useful advice, thanks. I'm thinking try something like a Markbass or BF 2x12 with the existing head and see how that goes. I can always change the head later.
17. Cheers for all the advice and comments! I do like the Stingray sound - just can't always get it right with my existing set up and sometimes I can't get it to cut through in a live situation. I have picked up on the solid state/clean sounds idea and maybe that's the direction I should go. Quite a few positive comments about Markbass and I must admit that was one brand that was on the radar.
18.
A little more detail might help - how were you setting up the amp and bass EQs ?
I tried all sorts, without going to extremes. I had thought that boosting the mids and cutting the treble on the bass it's self would help it cut through, but just made it sound "cardboardy" (?) I know Ampeg kit traditionally works with Precisions etc and that's great as I've got one of those as well, but I'm just wondering if any MM devotees out there could suggest a rig that they know works well for them?
19. I Play Rock n' Roll, Country, Jazz, Classic Rock - quite a variety with different bands. I'm looking for a full tone with a tight bottom end and I play finger style. I like the current rig, but it would be good if I could get a bigger, more punchy sound from a lighter set up; I'm hoping that adding more £ together with recent improvements in technology might do this for me, what do you think?
20. I do like a Stingray. I had a SBMM Ray 34 and loved it, but could never quite get it to sit right in the band mix, so sold it. Later I missed it and I thought I had worked out what i was doing wrong, so I brought a proper MM Ray4. I loved this as well. On a couple of gigs it sounded really great, but mostly it didn't. I got a 2nd hand Jap Mustang and it blew the Ray out of the water, so I sold the Ray. Now I miss it again! I'm thinking my amp is not Stingray compatible? (Ampeg Portaflex PF-500/PF210HE) and as its time to upgrade my rig, I'd like to get something that works with the MM sound. Suggestions very welcome.
21. I've got the Ampeg Portafex PF-500 and PF-210HE cab which i've had for about 5 years. I've been pretty happy with it but I've now got to the point when i'm thinking about changing and upgrading. I'd welcome any suggestions. I'm unsure on speaker size and combination (- bit of a heathen when it comes to amplification) I'm looking to sell the Ampeg rig (any idea on value?) and add some cash to take the purchase price between £1,000 and £1,500.
22. I had the Sq Cabronita and I have got Classic 50's P. I have always loved the Cabronita's and one day might get another. Sound wise it still sounded like a P (possibly due to the pick up placement) but smoother. It was a good sound, but not as punchy or as loud as my Classic. In the end it just felt like a watered down version, so was a bit pointless, so I sold it on.
23. I ordered the bass through Thomann and it arrived a week later in perfect order, well boxed, in tune and playable straight away. The chrome pick up cover and two allen keys were also included. The bass weighs 4.25kg (9.3lb) and it balances well enough and looks terrific. The fit and finish are faultless and the body has the appearance of one piece of wood (although that seems unlikely). I used it in rehearsal that evening and in a gig the following night. The sound is excellent; it has that typical Jazz tone with that hint of grit when the two pick ups are blended. I had no trouble cutting through the mix and it was comfortable to play over a 2.5 hour set. These are exceptional basses and I do agree with others who have said they are a "game changer" however for me the inevitable negative concerns the knobs. There are 5 of them and two are stacked. There is also a mini switch for active/passive. These controls are close together, cluttered and fiddly. And they are rather raised which is a little ungainly and could be prone to damage. This array does however offer fantastic control and the pre-amp provides a very wide range of sounds to the extent that if max'd it would be too much. I recently purchased a Fender American De-luxe Dimension and the scope of sounds offered by that £1,400 bass are embarrassed by those available on this £280 Sire! The tuners are fine, no problems, although they are not they best and I like the bridge, which is good and solid with the option of through body stringing. This would be a good bass at any price, but at less than £300, I think it is fantastic value.
24.
Did anyone see this. I though the songs were absolute pish, but that bass player was playing some lovely lines. It reminded me a bit of the Blockheads bass. Apparently the bass on the record was by Yaron Stavi. I've never hear of him before and don't know if it was him on the prog. Anyone else catch this?
I saw this and thought exactly the same. He had a really good sund and the lines played were very Norman Watt Roy. I thought it was excellent.
25. I did exactly that. I had an original block/bound Fender Precision Bass neck which i put on a J&D natural finished Jazz Body. It was a perfect fit and i gigged it regularly until i decided that the J&D pick ups were not quite cutting it. I replaced it with a Fender Classic 70's Jazz, had it re-finished and coincidentally, ended up putting in an Entwistle JBXN set. It now sounds much better!
