1. So, I'm looking at getting a Jazz Bass to sound a bit more full. I don't need tonal variety - one good sound is what i'm after for a rock based band. Am I correct in thinking that I will achieve what I'm after if I wire the two single coil pick ups as one "humbucker" in series rather than in parrallel? Will I get a bigger sound, more volume and have the added bonus of no hum? I guess I'd only need one volume knob, so could i also add a two band pre' (like the East 2band MM for e.g.) and have bass and treble in the other two knobs? Does anyone out there know how to do this? Appreciate your thoughts....
2. I nearly got the exact bass you're thinking of. In the end I got the non spalted version. I really like it. It is my first 5 string, really well built, very nice, broad neck with decent string spacing. A tight, well defined sound. The only quibble would be the frets seem quite tall and narrow which I am less keen on. Overall though a very good instrument for the money. Almost forgot; it's a 35" scale so make shire your ok with that.
3. Just seen a Stingray go on ebay for £600 which i think seems a very good price. (I even had a bid on it myself even though i can't afford it, but luckily - missed out!)
4. Like you, I am tall (6'6") and for what its worth I find the slightly larger Jazz Bass body the most comfortable bass i've played. But as I have quite big hands I prefer the slightly wider neck on a Precision Bass better though. I think the Squires are good, but i wouldn't go for the Afinity range, go for the Vintage Modified(VM) or the Classic Vibe(CV) ranges instead. I can't comment on some of the other makes mentioned, but I'm sure they are worth thinking about as well. As mentioned above, the EBO or other short scale (i.e. about 30") wouldn't be an obvious choice and they can look like "toys" on taller guys. Enjoy the choosing, great fun!
5. I sold my SBMM Ray34 after 5 months because although i loved the tone and the playability, i struggled to get it to sound as good in the band. Although I think I was possibly just getting there when it went; tempted by GAS (so many basses, so little time!). Now I must admit to missing it and have found myself checking out a few Stingrays. So I say, if you've not had it all that long, hang on in there. Having said that, both my P and my J worked with my covers band so easily; the sound just sat perfectly in the mix straight away.
6. Nice pics, it looks good with the black pearl plate. I have had a new nut and will probably get a new bridge in the new year. My problem is partially to do with the strings being set too wide for the neck; the "E's" are too easily pushed off the edge. If the bridge were narrower it should eliminate the problem and would also make the strings line up with the pole pieces better, so thats what i'm thinking of doing. Once done i'll put on some new strings and get it set up professionally. Hopefully the playability will then match the sound.
7.
That was the general view after the Pawn Shop Bass VI came out but it hasn't happened yet. The Squier is so cheap that i doubt it will happen with that either as owners will keep them as they haven't invested a lot of money in them.
I've got one, and that's how i feel about it. Its not worth selling even if i wanted to because its great fun for the money and actually it sounds great too. I've gigged it as the main bass in my "pub band" and it was very powerful; really cut through the mix. I have two problems with it though - string spacing is tricky if you're used to playing a conventional 4 string bass and the fret buzz/bridge allignment is still work in progress.
8.
What a stroke of luck I will check under the scratch plate when home from work
OMG - Don't do this to me! I was looking for one of these two weeks ago, missed one and couldn't find another so brought two other basses this week instead!
9.
I love that Marquee! I've often considered taking the plunge on one.
Im glad i did; really easy to play medium scale (32") and did i mention, it sounds great! Oh, and used only £200!
10.
I like the styling of the Burns, the irony of so many pick-guards for me (a bassist that plays with fingers) is also pretty good! No idea what they sound like though; any famous recordings of a Burns in action?
Outside of The Shadows, footage is a little thin on the ground, but this is a really versitile bass and can do lots of things - not famous, but there is this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAR27aLrrjs you need to get past the first demo to about 1.15 before the Marquee comes in.
11.
Hope you enjoy them both. Personally, I'd want a Lakland in the Burns' colour scheme.
Agreed. Or even the Burns in the Lakland colour scheme, which might make this great sounding bass more acceptable to players not looking for something quite so retro!
12. I really like the Squire Cabronita. I think it stacks up well against the Fender version; its got a slimmer neck, body contours, modern (non reverse) tuners and a better looking bridge which is more in proportion with the pick up and the minimal look of the guitar (which i really like). I think its the same pick-up, And its half the price of the Fender! I would be interested to know if it has the same CNC rout under the scratch plate, or if it could go naked? I'm tempted to find one 2nd hand and have it refinished in "Fiesta Red" which would be in keeping with the fiery Mexican theme suggested by the Cabronita name.
13. The Lakland is great, really massive sound and very comfortable to play. I've got to get used to 5 strings, but its going to be easier on this than others i tried. I also think these are great value; its a proper grown-up pro type instrument and i paid £649 new, which i think is a good price.
14. Chalk and cheese! i just got a new Lakland 55-01, as you'll know its active and my first 5 string. The neck is wide and really comfortable with a smooth satin finish and the sound is huge. Its been Plek'd so the action is low (too low really) but it is everything you would expect. However the revelation is my Burns Marquee 4 string bass, also new to me this week curtacy of a popular action site. It is really well screwed together, the strings line up over the pole pieces, the bridge is chunky, the tuners are light, it is in immaculate condition with a "Baby blue" finish and "Mint Green" type scratch plate. The sound is terriffic, it is full bodied and articulate with the middle position doing a great "P" sound and a "J" from the bridge with a host of other tones. These basses are great and are really under-rated in my opinion. What do you all think? 15. Hey Ruiner, No I didn't get it sorted yet. I will get it set up and hopefully that'll be ok. I have visions of having to get a new nut cut, but hope it wont come to that.
16. Hey Ruiner, I got it from TMCMusic Shop Crawley; they have a limited selection being a small shop, but happened to have one of these. The usual places i looked had sold out, so i jumped on it. The finish on mine is faultless (sunburst). Thanks for the info re the staytrem bridge, also thanks BetaFunk; i'll check out the Facebook page.
17. I just picked up my new Squire Bass V1 yesterday (early birthday present). Really like it. The sound seems to cut through well, plenty of "twang" would be good for Country stuff, but also does usual bass duties well. Best to play it with a pick though due to string spacing. I guess it is like a bass version of a Stratocaster - same sort of sound - just deeper! Only slight issue so far is the low "E" is too close to the edge of the neck and is too easily pushed off the edge.
18. Thanks Guys - really appreciate the comments. If its do-able, i'm keen to get it done. Its very frustrating when you know what you want, but have no idea how to do it! The bass in question is having a new finish at present, so will be a couple of weeks before i get it back. Are there any pitfalls or likely issues with what i'm looking to do?
19. I would think it would fit - as far as i know the Mark Hoppus is a standard Jazz size/shape body. Anybody know differently?
20. That sounds good, at least it seems what i want is do-able! The bass is having a re-finish at the moment and the guy doing it may not have it back to me by 6th (he's going on hols), but if i can get it back by then i would certainly be interested in you doing it. i'll have to come back to you nearer the time. Thanks for your comments.
21. Hi, new here, this is my first post! I'm looking for some advice/help: I've got a MIM Jazz that i want to get rewired, but i haven't got a clue how to do it, (not being technical) especially as i want it a bit different. What i want is Volume, Blend (Pan), and Tone/Parallel to Series. Firstly can anyone tell me if this combination is possible and secondly, is there anyone out there based between say London and Brighton, who could do it for me? Appreciate your thoughts.
