1. 'Strong' by Robbie Williams. In fact, 90% of his work gives me brain-burst. What grinds my gears more than almost anything, however, is the insertion of a needless 'rap' in a song for no reason other than to add 'urban flava'. Absolutely does my box in. Like when Jay Z chimes in on Beyonce records with such insightful musings as "It's your boy" and "Holla". Grrr...
2. That '64 Jazz bass is....well.....words fail me!! It has a Holy Grail look about it! Any soundclips? If it sounds half as good as it looks it will be gorgeous.
3. See the difference in the two hands? It's even more prominent after a practice, like a bicep after curls.
4. https://youtu.be/jGyrGTuMhzo Fabulous tones, and that's scarcely the tip of the iceberg.
5. It's not a cyst, nor is it cyst-like. thankfully.
6. You have it on both hands?
7. Not to this degree. About ten years ago, a bassist friend showed me this on his fretting hand. I checked my own and there wasn't one - sure there was a very slight bump where the skin folded, but nothing like this. Now I have a corker, and firm to touch, almost like a flexed muscle.
8.
All I can see is the outside of my hand....can you see inside your hand ? Cooooool Think a picture might help
okay then, the outer edge of your hand - the pinky side.
9. Everyone, or every bassist? I only have it on my fretting hand. I've asked numerous mates and family etc and they have nothing similar. I was never aware of it until I began playing bass.
10. Make a fist with your fretting hand. Clench nice and tight. Do you have a weird bulge on the outside of your hand, roughly in line with the bone at the bottom of your thumb?' It's so weird, as though playing bass has developed something like a weird 'muscle' on my hand!
11. I've been doing a little research on these Sire basses pver the last week, and have come to the conclusion that my next bass will probably be a V7. The very same one as this, in the same finish. I'm not a fan of white guitars/basses at all, but something about this one, with the tortoiseshell pickguard and the rosewood fretboard is just sexalicious. Paul Turner has a beautiful 1966 Fender Jazz and this is realistically the closest I will get to owning a bass that has those looks. YouTube videos are few and far between, moreso ones with decent audio, but a guy called Brad Cummings does a quick review and the tone sounds bloody amazing. In the words of bass legend Abraham Lincoln - "I got to get me one o'these."* *quote and surrounding facts may be entirely made up.
12. Justin Chancellor - great tone, great lines, great riffs.
13. Billy Gould is a great shout!
14. Want one! I have watched some videos on the tube of the ewe, most impressed, but upon visiting their website I became extremely confused by the options (not a tech guy at all). I have a passive Squier PJ Precision and want the most versatile one I can get, but hit a brick wall trying to understand it all. Any owners out there? How do you like it? I'm surprised I haven't heard more about these, seems like a great gizmo.
15. It appears he has the world's longest fingers.
16. Ant - what do Pre CBS Ps go for, and how easy are they to obtain?
17. Allow me to rephrase the question somewhat: What's out there in terms of P-style basses around the same money? What's on a par, and what's superior?
18. Right, yes, a Wal. I'll give you that. I'd probably rather take the Wal. If I have that money I can afford a decent chiropractor ;-)
19. Now here's a bassist who gets bassists excited. What do you recommend, and/or what is considered his finest work? I've heard his fretless work on the Paul Young album, and while I agree it's beautifully played and extremely tasteful, it's not my cuppa *awaits inevitable backlash*. While we're at it, what are BCers thoughts on his custom Fender Precision? There is a concensus that it's horribly overpriced - why do you think it overpriced? What could you have for the same money? (These are genuine questions btw, I'm not challenging anyone's opinion). I have only watched some demos on YouTube but it sounds like an incredibly versatile P bass which has a superb range of tones, all of which struck me as quality. £3k seems like an insane amount of money to me, but would I buy it if I were a rich man? Badabadabadabadeebedeebada? Yeah, I think I maybe would, and not only am I not a fan of signature models (be yourself and all that) but I don't even think it looks nice! I would change the pickguard for starters! But yeah, those tones? I'm a fan of the Precision tone and that's one of the best. It even does the Funk Machine tone brilliantly. Anyone own one/played one? What do you think? Thanks.
20. How does one check for lifted frets?
21. It is present when unplugged but not nearly as bad as when plugged in. Trying to slide up or down the neck is utterly hellish.
22. Not so much when unplugged, no. The truss rod, if anything, has very little relief, and the action is not über-low. Indeed, the stick preamp is awful and cannot handle the output of the pickup, which is a disgrace in my opinion. Sterling must know about this as even the earliest reviews of the Sub Ray basses mentioned it.
23. Check out Dark Sanctuary. It sounds like somebody stuck a mic into heaven and recorded angels.
24. Quite possibly. I'm trying to find a gap in my schedule to get it to a very generous BCer who has kindly offered to set it up for me. It's driving me crackers!
25. Mine is really buzzy/rattley/zingy/clackey and a nightmare to control. I changed the strings to Dunlop Super Brights, which are nickel, but it hasn't helped one bit. I have the same strings on my Squier and have no such problems. Is there any chance the frets/fretwire could be a factor? I'm really struggling to eliminate or even minimise the unwanted handling noises on this bass. I'm fairly confident it's not my technique, as I have no such problems with my Squier. I have made numerous tweaks and finally got the action to a nice playable place, albeit with a bit more buzzing than I would like above the 12th fret, but I'm having what feels like an insane amount of handling noise all over the neck. I would try roundwounds but I play a lot of slap. Would halfwounds help any? Anyone have similar problems with these (or any) basses? Any tips, suggestions or solutions? Thanks guys.
