1. The Winchester Club on Ingram Street had a Big Band on Saturday afternoons - they used play in Lauder's Bar on Sauchiehall Street until Lauder's decided they would rather have more tables in the venue than one of the finest bands in the WoS. I'm not sure if they're still resident at the Winchester but they are definitely worth the walk to find out. They had a killer sax player.
2. Yeah I'm toying with the idea of getting a full membership, I wish I could've seen the Ed Friedland seminars, I really dig Ed as a player and a teacher.
3. I'm sure I saw a video where he says he has taught some well-known bassists, but doesn't say who. He's a monster player in his own right. Would love to have a pint with the fella.
4. Some guys (and girls) don't get a fraction of the love their playing deserves. Tony Kanal springs to mind, and Nick Fyfe (ex-Jamiroquai) is another (everyone talks about Zender and Turner). Robert Deleo of Stone Temple Pilots had some cracking bass lines and Fat Mike from NOFX often has something cool going on. Who would you nominate?
5. Love this guy, great teacher, great enthusiasm and has lessons on just about everything a bassist could need help with. I understand he has tutored some high-profile bassists but doesn't toot his horn and won't say whom. I wondered if any basschatters know? I'm curious - in fact I'm intrigued!* *I'm nosey
6. Plenty loud enough to practice unplugged, hear every note and still have the missus complain that it's distracting her as she watches the soaps. I don't get her gripe - I believe I am doing her a huge favour!
7. That is cracking tone, would love to be able to dial in a sound like that. His playing is ultra tight as well. I didn't realise Mark Rankin had gone and the old bassist was now the lead singist!
8. Dude! Pics!
9. That video is a more effective marketing tool than any glossy catalogue or superstar endorsement, IMO. It makes me trust the manufacturer, and therefore makes me want to try their basses!
10. "Duncan Designed Pickups" No I didn't.... Badump-tsh! Sorry...
11. My main bass is a Squier VMPJ and they are just a treat to play. I agree with your assessment of the pickups though - they should be better, even at that pricepoint. Enjoy your new bass :-)
12. Hmmm I shall measure the nut and get back to you. Here's a question. I have another bass which feels perfect in every way to play. If I were to drop the tuning permanently on that bass by a semitone, what adjustments would I make to make sure it plays as sweetly? Because I tried it and it got rattley. So I tuned it back up again.
13. So would you recommend tightening it further to remedy the high action? Or do you think it looks like it needs a luthier's touch? Did I screw up?
14. I feel that action is still crazily high. Not a joy to play. And even at that, ai need a really light touch above the 12th fret to avoid buzz.
15. http://www.gak.co.uk/en/squier-vintage-modified-jazz-bass-v-upraded-olympic-white/85224 Or did you mean in black? It's a damn shame they only do that in white or natural finishes.
16. I'm in Beith, which is about 16 miles south-west of Glasgow. Warwick videos, you say? I'll be checking those out post haste! Thanks :-)
17. Cheers! I don't actually know how to measure neck relief though. I will have to consult Google!
18. There is a chance that there is a high fret somewhere or Inow have too little relief. I guess every instrument has its limits in terms of how much you can do with the setup. But I certainly don't feel the action is especially low. It's not as low my Squier's, and that doesn't buzz.
19. I, for one, would really appreciate a guide with pics or videos. I have a Sterling Sub Ray 4 and I'm having a terrible time getting the setup to where I'm happy. I've tightened the truss about a half turn and lowered the sadlles and still the action is around 2.5mm on the bass side but with buzz after the 12th fret. I want the action a bit lower than that but it would leave me with frankly horrendous buzz above the 9th fret. I'm afraid to tighten the truss any more than I already have - there is a distinct curve of the fretboard as is, and while the answer is clearly to have a pro do it, I don't have £65 (not including strings, mind) to splash out, so I'm restricted to making wee adjustments myself with info from good people like yourself. I play a mixture of fingerstyle and slap and I'm pretty new to bass. I've spent this money on a new bass and I want to be able to play it so it is a little frustrating. I think some nut filing might be required but as I said I"m loathe to tighten the truss any more.
20. Yeah, but....slap....
21.
Save money and kill two birds with one stone by eating a KFC, then without wiping your hands, play the bass. Feels about the same and is just as attractive, IME. Horrible stuff.
brilliant!!
22. You don't happen to know your specs offhand, do you? I would be interested to know how you have it.
23. Is it possible to set one of these beauties up to have a fairly low action without the characteristic rattle these basses are famed for? Love, love LOVE that mean tone, but I find the rattle really offputting. Or is just my fingering that needs work? ;-)
24. That's what I thought!
25. Not exactly a huge gamble to buy a tin and see for myself, but I like to get opinions first. If you've used this, what are your experiences in terms of pros and cons? Is there any advantage to be gained? Does it affect the tone or playability of your strings? I can't help but think it would make your strings grubby!
