I really want a Spector Euro 4LX but even if I could afford one, the wife would kill me. This video blew my mind - listen to how mean it sounds, and this is through a Crate Amp: http://m.youtube.com/results?q=spector%20euro%204lx&sm=1

I get the feeling that his Metallica work is the tip of a very large iceberg and this bloke is a beast. He seems to exude joy and passion for bass, too. I know of his past in Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, but can anyone recommend which songs or albums showcase his finest work?

I ordered my new bass on Monday, and yesterday the tracker said it was still in the depot at Köln :-( Was hoping it would come today but I'm guessing Monday now. -
Spotify, very very impressed, anyone else use it ?

I had the free version, twas good but a little frustrating as it is pretty limited in terms of features. I opened the app about three weeks ago and lo and behold, an offer awaits me - 99p for 3 months Premium membership. I signed up immediately. It's brilliant, was really pleased to see they have a lot of the more obscure music I like. It's going to be a wrench when the three months is up deciding whether to renew at full whack or to live without what is undoubtedly a fantastic app. -
Just seen the bass. A fitting tribute. Although whenever I listen to AiC, particularly Dirt, I hear an orange Spector...
Do you have Synesthesia?

I just can't make peace with the looks of those Yammys. Sorry guys, they're good basses at great prices, but they're just not 'me'.

I managed to find a video of the G&L doing a P-style tone. Is it achieved via the front pickup-active mode-series? Not bad. But when you factor in the seemingly endless range of additional tones that can be had on that bass, it'd be hard to look elsewhere. I may have to overstretch my budget to get one, but it may well be worth it. Only problem is getting to try before I buy to test playability. I tried the L2000 a while back and found the neck very cumbersome for my hands, a little too thick and chunky, so I imagine the 5 would be even tougher to play. FWIW, I have played a Sterling Sub Ray5 and thought the neck was great (again, for my hands). I will just have to get my bum down to the shops and try out a few basses!

Oh my. That is spectacular!
Mine does very passable p and j impressions at the flick of a switch.
Really? It does a Precision sound?? I did not know this!
-
Doesn't get any cheaper than this and mine is amazingly good for the money. The printed red tort guard is just plain vulgar but I've covered mine in white self adhesive vinyl and it looks much better! Before and after pics:
Sorry, what is it?

The Lakland and the G&L both sound superb! Contenders, for sure!
-
Ooooo a Lakland......I WISH! Would love one of those. G&L do a P-style body with a PJ configuration...can't remember the model name but it's very reasonably priced. I must go and see if they do it in a 5.....

Colleya, those are fabulous basses for the RRP, to think I could possibly pick one up for £350ish is mental! I've played the 4 string version and it does a LOT of tones. I never even thought of it. I'm really leaning towards something with a P-pup, but I'm strugglong to find something that ticks all the boxes. The Yammy sounds great but I just can't fall in love or even like with the looks - it's just not 'me'. I've checked a few vids and to be honest (and some of you may think I'm mad) the leader at the moment is believe it or not the Squier VM5 Jazz Bass. I like the looks (Marcus-tastic) I like the tones and I love the price. There are doubtless better basses out there, but not at that price as far as I can find so far. Even the Cort GB range is a good bit dearer. However, keep 'em coming and I'll keep checking them out.

Just bought a Sterling Sub Ray 4, but GAS is perpetual! A 5 string of some kind, but dunno what yet! Squier CV Precision (just wish they did them in better colours) A Genz Benz Streamliner Warwick SS1

Thanks for all the suggestions so far chaps. I'm looking forward to hopping on youtube and checking out some vids later :-) That Spector is beautiful, and I'll bet it's a joy to play, unfortunately I'm just at the research stage at the moment and I reckon it'll be closer to summer before I'm buying. Only other thing is - and apologies for not mentioning this in my original post - my new bass (arriving any day now) is a Sterling Sub Ray4 so I'm looking for something tonally completely different from that. I would prefer something that could do a P-style tone, but I'm open to suggestions.

Hi, I have a NBD coming up soon - pics will be posted upon arrival, but I'm already looking to my NEXT acquisition!! I want to ditch my Squier VMPJ - decent wee bass, but: A. I don't love the ceramic pups B. I want a 5 Now, I've heard many an opinion about the lower end (!) of the 5-string market, particularly the quality/flappiness of that extra low string. I'm only looking to spend £350ish on a new or used 5, so my expectations aren't terribly high - just an entry level 5er, preferably a P or a J. What do y'all recommend, either new or used? Looking forward to your replies. Thanks :-)
Jamareo just tweeted me (get me!!) saying "me" to the question of who played on the recording..I wonder if it was a misunderstanding by the interviewer?
Can't possibly argue with that! In fairness, it does sound 100% Jamareo in terms of tone, feel and style and I was surprised when I read that interview. If Jamareo says it was Jamareo, it was Jamareo!
-
Cheers for tabbing those licks, Hiram!! Much obliged :-)
-
I can't seem to ape that wee lick that goes "dum-wackata b'doo".
-
http://radio.com/2014/12/04/mark-ronson-interview-uptown-funk/ About 3/4s of the way down the page, Ronson says Bhasker played bass. It does sound like Jamareo's playing though. And that tone.....oooo sir.....

What are you listening to right now?
Funky Dunky replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Devin Townsend - Epicloud and Deconstruction Dark Sanctuary - Les Memoires Blessees And selected tracks from the new Mark Ronson album (never thought I'd find myself saying that, but there's some cracking bass playing on there) -
It's alright. Really lacks volume, even with decent phones. Very fiddly and fragile but for the price, a good wee toy. How do you adjust the tempo on the rhythms?
-
Would love to hear some sound clips of this rig Raslee, if you have the means. I want your amp :-(
-
Can't comment on the effect used, but it was indeed Jeff Bhasker playing bass on the record, Mark Ronson himself confirmed this in a recent interview. Pretty damn good player, and the tone is awesome as well IMO. (Bruno Mars played the drums on this track). Anyone heard Feel Right from the Ronson album? Musically reminiscent of early James Brown, and Mystikal's performance is quite entertaining.
