Pretty BASS COMBOS (SLIGHTLY ODD TOPIC)
MB1 replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Amps and Cabs
MB1. Remember a Bassist in the Beastie boys had a Clear Perspex Ampeg Rig! Short of that Mr Kings Ashdown Retroglide rig. Both probably totally impractical for home use but Pretty! -
I used to have one of those Yamaha DD65s. Great fun! Not so good to learn on though. BTW What's "Photo quilt top" mean? Is is not the real wood grain?
MB1. Its like a photograph thats lacquered over...... the cheaper Peavey cirrus basses employ the same technique for the tigers eye effect.
Ah ha that's easy for you to say as it's local. If bassday would like to pay me to attend as with Mr Stevens, I'm in. Also if I come to Manc I'll have to visit the in laws. "The organisers have already stated Bassday will not conflict with any other music show" Hmm we'll see eh?
MB1. "Whats All this Noise?....Not Local EH?...We'll Have No Trouble Here!.......This is a local Bassday for Local Bassists!"....
I agree with this also. I had some amazing bass gear, all paid for by the record company. I just sold it and gave up for about 6 years and have now had to go out and buy everything again but stuff thats good but not worth as much as what I did have. If you can keep it and just tuck it away then I would highly recommend that. I promise, you will regret it, especially if you lose a bass as beautiful as this.
MB1. +1....I agree too!....im after the Micro BR!
Hi Peter, Some interesting choices but you will certainly get "more bang for your buck" going 2nd Hand. Ibanez is a good choice and also have a look at the Cort range. They make a lot of Ibanez guitars as well as G&L, Lakland and some Fenders. Massively underrated. In the interest of pushing a sale. How about: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=28919&hl=Aria If I was still playing 4 String basses this would not be up for sale. It has one of the nicest necks i have ever played and the 3 band EQ is fantastic. But as I only do 5-String these days, it is sitting around doing nothing. Gives you a spare £100 as well.
MB1. +1 on the Aria!
I went on Sunday and knew something was amiss as soon as I arrived at the car park which, despite it being already 11:00, was almost empty. To my mind I think everyone had done nearly all of their exhibition budget at the London International Music Show. All the usually big stands were smaller with very few basses and little or no demo facilities, for instance the Fender stand was a tent with about 8 instruments (guitar and bass) total! Saw and played the new Sims Enfield basses, nice almost like a modern reincarnation of Wal, but at between £2.5 - £3.5k a pop way too expensive. Nice stand with Phil Jones amps and Sandberg basses which were good, a friend of mine bought a California JMM for not bad money. My favourite bass was the Lakland Bob Glaub on the Headline (PRS) stand, probably the best overall stand there, but I couldn't justify another £700 after the gear year I've had. There was still the odd stand with demoers going slappity, poppity, all treble, little bass and no mids. Don't get me wrong I like to slap and pop too and admire the abilities of those at the show, but less is more guys. Try using that tone and technique in an actual song and it won't work and the guitarists are just as bad, overgained widdling to the fore as usual, at these shows it still sounds like the '80s. Despite the lack of bodies and smaller stands it was still very difficult to get a good demo of any potential purchase due to the volume of the demonstrators as usual. When are they going to have some enclosed demo rooms for pity's sake? All in all very disappointing and by far the worst Music Live I've been too, so will probably be the last especially at an inflated £17 for a smaller show! I'll be sticking to London from now on, bigger, better and cheaper. Finally (and I've said this before) what absolute tw@t thought that having Bass Day on the same day as Music Live was a good idea and why Manchester? The Midlands is the best place for these things as both the North and South based players can get there with reasonable ease. In fact if Bass Day had been in the Midlands I might have made a weekend of it, stayed over and visited both. It was a long way to go for a coffee and a muffin, yep that's all I bought.
MB1. The Royal Northern College of Music is a Great Venue for Bassday, Big enough for the job, and harmonically good enough for live performance,(not a bad bar either) if T.M Stevens can get there from the states, you have no excuse.Leave Bassday where it is Thanks,i think the organisers will have enough to think about planning next years Bassday, without having to look for other suitable venues in the Midlands. The organisers have already stated Bassday will not conflict with any other music show.If it ain't broke dont fix it!.

I must confess a penchant for exactly that colour of yellow (see av) but I don't think I'd be ready for a whole bass worth of it.
MB1. No! this is much more frightening! its a semi acoustic 4 string bass on Ebay U.K (just put Dean Cabby Sytlist Bass)
Yep, all that talk of sustain and clarity... bogus, what it's really about is that moment when you're at home had a nice warm bath, drying off with a towel round your waist and you pick of the bass for a tiny bit of practice... Ye Gods that bolt-on plate is cold! And poly finishes are pretty icy too. Neck-thru instruments were clearly developed with the naked player in mind. A square of cold metal to the abdomen kills the whole warm and fuzzy vibe (man)...
MB1. Remember to take them bolts out of your neck before you get in the shower Frank!.
