What Have You Been Listening To? And Whos The Bassist?
MB1 replied to Brandonh's topic in General Discussion
MB1. I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO! Anything thats not in the charts, anything thats not a [Top Ten hit] cover of a classic, anything with real musicians on it,anything thats not been recorded by somebody hoping to jumpstart there flagging acting career, anything that doesnt sound like somebodys shopping list.anything that doesnt involve 4 familys of people getting on stage, and trying to make somebodys shopping list sound down in the hood!anything that doesnt sound like some small child, trying to be dean martin or frank sinatra.anything that has nothing to do with the osbourne family(sorry ossie).Anything that doesnt realistically sound like someone trying to summon up bealzebub the horn...ed one.anything that Doesnt start off with greeenpeace, and ends up with porsche and ferrari and a change of headwear.can you guess what it is yet?
Simple question, what are the best strings for slap? Cheers Chris.
MB1. Simple Answer,Whatever your happy with, slap is a style ,not a set of strings. There are more deciding factors involved action, set up,some people like lighter gauge strings some heavier, whatever works for you.no string on the market will ever improve your slap style if your set up and action is miles off the neck. MB1. I once had a series 2 that i bought off a guy in stockport.i noticed the damaged flightcase in the back of his bmw,he also told me, his bass had fallen out of the van.this was an original status flightcase extremely heavy and robust.the case was slightly damaged on the corner, the bass unmarked and still in tune. what coincidence? you have just entered the twilight zone! MB1. Give me your job, and you can play penilessly in your two bands, and not have to let anyone down. sound good? stick with the job, hold down, one band, and have whatever amazingly tasty gear your heart yearns for? sound good? is your playing a hobby or a job?you seem to have a good job!not of the bass playing variety though! Is this what you want? does it look like you could ever become famous in either band? only people in famous bands, can afford not to work, as that is classed as there job, ussually. i was a uk mobile service engineer for 4 years, and couldnt play in any band, as i deemed myself unreliable,so i know where your coming from.just where is the line between work and play? catch 22!
Who mentioned Metallurgy???? I have two degrees in metallurgy.. ..the issue with strings is nothing to do with the metal, it's the gunge (bits of finger!) that they get clogged up with. I used to clean mine in an ultrasonic bath with meths, works fine, takes them back to almost new. Boiling them will do nothing much in my opinion and the water getting into the inner windings might be detrimental. In theory if you can get them as clean as they were when new, they should sound exactly the same, the metal doesn't know how old it is, nor remembers for how long it's been played, they act of plucking, no matter how hard, will not change the string as the tension is well within the elastic limit. The actual chemistry of the metal will not be exactly the same though and this might make one string sound slightly different to the next... actually, with metal prices the way they are at the moment, I reckon that the manufacturers will be changing alloys or working to the bottom of the chemistry spec to make the alloy cheaper anyway. As far as strings are concerned "stainless steel" is "stainless steel", it never states if it's 316, 304 etc etc... basically they can change whatever they like within reason and they don't have to tell anyone. I thought for ages about approaching the string manufacturers and blagging some strings out of them in the name of "research". As for them being able to develop new strings that would last longer? I think we might be giving them a little bit more credit than they deserve.. they will neither have the facilities to do the neccessary research, nor would they want to I reckon. Richard VASQUEZ
MB1. Ive got this pan ive previously used to boil strings in,you really wouldnt want to do your veg in it,brighter ,for a while longer if you stick em in the cooker after boiling, to dry out.make sure you tell her indoors though as pizza and strings is not recomended.
I'm thinking of trading in my Trace Elliot 1215smx combo for an Ashdown C115-500 EVO II combo. How do you think they compare?
