Here’s one I had to re-learn from scratch when I realised I’d been playing it wrong for the last 10 years. I couldn’t quite get the little “up” lick in the bridge but otherwise I’m pretty happy with this one!

I’ve never owned a bass worth more (based on the new sticker price at the time) than my Mexican Deluxe P. I have 3 Mexican Fenders, and a USA MusicMan SUB. Thinking about it the SUB would probably be the most expensive of the lot if they were all corrected for inflation but I see it as being in a similar bracket to the MIM Deluxe. I’ve often thought about buying more expensive stuff, but I can’t justify it. I have more basses than I need, and the quality of each would be good enough to use to a professional standard (which I am not) Doesn’t stop me window shopping though 😉

No problem. I should say there are two watchouts based on my experiences 1. Generally the J pickup has a massive drop in output on both basses - I NEVER have it soloed, but, when used as a blend with the P you can get some lovely tones out of it (IIR the Bloodclot and Boiled Frogs covers both have the pickup blend in the mid point) 2. On the modern version, when you switch to passive there is no tone control, so all of your tone shaping options are in active only. You also asked about the necks - they are skinny. The modern version has a flatter fingerboard radius so the back of the neck feels marginally wider to me, but it’s very slight.

I have two of the active ones from different eras - one from 04/05 (red) which is just a straight active model and then a second from 14/15ish (green) when the active/passive switch, hi-mass bridge and 18v preamp were introduced. Both great, the newer model is probably the higher quality bass, but I’m less attached to it. Some playing videos with each below:

Read elsewhere that Seymour Duncan QP are also ridiculously hard to come by at the moment for the same reasons as mentioned above.

My first Fender, bought completely blind on eBay with every £ I could scrape as a 15 year old. Still rocks today: ALSO. I would struggle to ever sell my Hoppus signature bass. Mark was one of two bassists who inspired me to start playing and it was the bass I really wanted when I bought the Fender above. I couldn’t ever see any prospect of having that amount of money. A few years into my first real job (mid twenties) I got paid a bonus that meant I could make a leap I never thought I’d make. It’s symbolic for me, and they don’t make ‘em anymore so I don’t ever see this one leaving the rack. Spoiler, it also still rocks:

Then any of the options you mention would be just fine. Personally, I’d get some kind of Precision Bass. Check the used market, as you will definitely find a Mexican Precision for not far off £400 if you aren’t in a hurry. If you want it now, a Squier Classic Vibe will see you right. There are 60’s and 70’s models available but the only differences are aesthetic.

Looks lovely. Shame about the wiring issue but good to hear Anderton’s aren’t messing about.

What are you wanting to do with it? Do you want to play a particular style of music? Do you have any songs in mind with a tone you want to emulate? Any considerations like weight, or how big/small you’d prefer the neck to be? My best answer will always be go down to the local shop and play EVERYTHING, even the stuff you would otherwise write off. If that isn’t possible, knowing more about what you’re after will help me help you 😊

The 5 string Jazz comes in the best colours! There’s a really nice blue as well. GAK have the Sunburst 4 string in their January sale for £799! About as low as I’ve seen one.

Yeah exactly my point - it’s all relative given inflation, increased cost of freight etc. All that aside, these look like nice basses. I’m now trying to talk myself out of the Satin Blonde P.

I did catch myself thinking “…back in my day a Mexican Standard bass only cost £330!” But I checked myself, because the world has moved on since 2004. £469 is toppy compared to the current CV models so you’d hope that reflected an improvement in quality/finish.
