de afwerking mk4-4++ - blablas has that building itch again
alittlebitrobot replied to blablas's topic in Build Diaries
Re-added the pictures.
Thanks for doing so. People should see this amazing work and, with a couple of builds planned, I use this forum as a reference library so it's great to have a thread like this fully illustrated again. -
A piece of music inspired by Toblerone. Got it

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
alittlebitrobot replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
My point: I gave up 'the chase' about 2 years ago because things would sell out literally instantly; I think the thread worked out that there were probably scripts running to automatically purchase decos as soon as they were listed. It rather took the fun out of it...
Sorry to resurrect this thread but just, as a possibly final word on it, the page of "decorative" instruments on the Thomann site is almost always empty these days but their eBay page is more frequently populated: Thomann_gmbh There's no 'buy it now' option so they're obviously trying to maximise their money on it, but I've seen a few nice things go for good prices. It's funny to see this Marcus Miller Sire V7s condition listed as "for parts or not working" when the only problem is a dent in the wood near the bridge. -
Sponge repost (ignore)
How many times is this thread going to be duplicated. I'm sure this is the 5th one in the past few months
ah crap. Sorry. I searched and didn't see it. I must've messed up because I just searched again and saw two from May. Welp..feel free to lock this one, mods. -

Semi Hollow Bass (and another two...)

Yep. I'm in. -
Anyway, just off to build my 16 string glass-composite uke. It's going to be my best build yet....
Just the 16? Keeping it simple for your next build? Disappointing.

Great stuff! Interesting that you used watercolour to stain. I made a bass a couple of years ago that I used oil paint on. My thinking was that I wanted to avoid adding water to dry wood, but I suppose the amount is so small that it makes no difference. Either way, I was very happy with the results. I thinned some paint a little bit with turps (fine art bg here too ) and rubbed it in with a rag, then let it dry and then rubbed in a heavier coat. By the way, since it seems nobody else has brought it up, well done on getting a bottle of Lagavulin 16 yr old for 20 notes

wow! Those strings are the perfect choice. Great work. I think, for myself, I'd call it Blob but, for public consumption, maybe something like Amoeba.

I've just logged into BC for the first time in a couple of years, due to personal mumbo jumbo, and I couldn't have asked for a better return than to find another amazing AndyJr build. Thanks to TheGreek for patronising this bizarre, brilliant build Such a fun thread to read. The funny thing is. I have a design for a bass I want to build and, although it's not a headless type, I was planning on doing something similar with anchoring the strings at an angle through the body or around the edge. It's hard to explain in text but I came down to a couple of designs. One of them was a lot like what you did here, Andy, and you've put me right off it I'd only mess it up, so I'll be going with plan B instead.

Hand Sanitiser Recomendations?
alittlebitrobot replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
I just wear marigolds. Yes, it completely destroys my technique but it's worth it. Crusty jugglers... -
Brilliant. I love watching your builds. I learn so much.

I have a similar thing with Wooten. Incredible technique and deep knowledge of music theory but all I hear is lift music. Or, if any of you ever played a game called "Transport Tycoon".... And, musically, I'm not a complete "just keep it simple" kind of person either. I LOVE Squarepusher. Tom might even be my favourite bassist, so I'm not averse to rapid-fire, technical mumbo jumbo, but Wooten, Bailey, Hamm and some others just sound unbearably cheesy to me. also, I'm not a fan of Jaco
dont think ive ever seen an SR506 (or any SR500 range) with a maple neck, my SR500 have the rosewood fret board. yours looks pretty sweet
Yeah, it was hard to get. They weren't made in huge numbers and Ibanez didn't make them available in Europe. I think it looks so much nicer than the rosewood and (I didn't mention this on any other post about it) because I think the fretboard-as-tonewood thing is nonsense, I wanted the much-more-sustainable maple.

Which Strings? Constructive String advice please
alittlebitrobot replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Over the years, I've tried different ones and, like you, forgotten what set I was currently using. A quick overview of me and my strings: I don't replace them very often. I'm not in a band so I probably put on a new set every year or 9 months or so. I do like the sound of new strings (and I always go roundwound with the exception of some Fender nylon tapewounds I put on my acoustic...which I liked) but I'm not so into the sound that I replace strings the minute they lose that new sparkle. I've tried Rotosounds, D'addario, Pyramid, Fender, DR and Foderas ..and my sr506 came with Elixirs, which felt crap to me for some reason. Maybe they make cheap ones to put on new basses as a marketing thing. The first ones to actually wow me were the Fodera nickels. They felt so good and sounded great and, although the new string sparkle faded after a week (as it always does) they maintained a fresh sound for longer than any other string I've used. I'm currently using D'Addarios because I bought a couple of different packs to experiment and they're almost as good, but I'm going back to Fodera next. I think that's my string. I also put some DR high beams on my fretless and they sound, and feel, fantastic. I've been lucky recently. Before these, I had D'a "super brights" on the fretless and that was a mistake. Not the right sound for a fretless. -
I voted a couple of days ago but have listened to them all several times since. After gorging myself on noodles I’m still hungry for more and looking forward to what’s going to be served up next month.
Probably more noodles but, judging by previous comments, with a side helping of s**t.
Voted. All nice pieces. I was quite surprised how similar some were though in terms of arpeggio acoustic guitar styley. There must be a shared consciousness connecting some bass players. I will enter next time, judging by my playing at rehearsal the other night (first time I've touched a bass in a month) it will be sh*t!
I noticed the similarity too (I'm one of those noodlers) and it's interesting. Speaking only for myself, that tends to be how my bass noodling goes because I'm not in a band. I make music myself and, if I've put something together in Ableton, my basslines tend to be very simple, but that's not the kind of thing I'd bother playing when I'm just sitting with my bass in silence. So unless somebody wants to hear me playing whole notes, I suspect my Noodle-comp submissions will be along these lines
... need to make sure mine is louder next month, I seem to be at about half the volume of everyone else
same! I'm so crap at the mixing and mastering stuff.

Here's a playlist for the 11 that are on SoundCloud NOODLECOMP and, by the way, for those who are interested in this kind of thing, can I just take this opportunity to strongly recommend Hakubaku organic Udon noodles.

Vintage Unlined Fretless £130 NOW £100
alittlebitrobot replied to Risk101's topic in Basses For Sale
somebody buy this! I've had mine for nearly 10 years now and I love it. They're so well made. I replaced the electronics in mine last year with a passive loom from Ki0gon and it's the business. Perfect. GLWTS and, incidentally, the body is Bubinga. In my case, one solid piece, but I can't tell for sure from your photos if that's the case with this one. -
very jealous of all you SR Premium people, but I love my sr506M Here it is on the day I got it about two years ago [sharedmedia=core:attachments:145962] I'd love an ATK too. Yours looks amazing DeezerButler.

Well, I think if I said "no", then I'd be committing to posting regularly until the day I die. So, yeah, I probably will go quiet at some point, but I'm such a lurker anyway it'll go unnoticed.
