1. What a great way to celebrate a big birthday! Good on you - looking forward to seeing this one progress and yes, nice piece of wood to start the project
2. Until very recently, it was my Fender Roadworn Jazz. It's an absolutely stunning bass in every way I just never felt so comfortable playing a bass, and one that just sounds so good too However, in a recent attack of GAS, I also bought a Fender Roadworn P bass The P had had some slight thinning work done on the neck (before I bought it) - superb finish to that work too. I just had it converted to PJ, with a Jazz pickup added by brilliant cardiff luthier Dave Dearnaley I have to say it was brilliant before, but now it is immense. I love the sound options the PJ arrangement gives me, but it's also quite a bit lighter weight than my Jazz (I don't have any scales, before anyone asks - but the RW P seems the lightest solid body long scale bass I've ever picked up) I would hate to part with either my RW Jazz or my RW P - but if I absolutely had to, I now admit I'd keep the P But parting with the Jazz would hurt (slightly) less
3.
Quick update, spoke to Dave Dearnaley, he could not have been more helpful, but he only works in Nitro so while his estimate was reasonable (very in fact) he wanted the bass for 8 weeks at least, so for now that not viable, may simply sell it and buy one in a colour i actually want. But Dave would be my first choice based on his thoughtfull advice should anything change.
Yes, he really is a top notch luthier, but he's a smashing guy with it too Could you get a cheapish bass, or even borrow one, while yours was with him? Might be cheaper than changing such an expensive bass? You could also re-sell the cheapy when you've done with it.... worth a thought?
4.
There is a new type of paint been used on cars. It's made from liquid vinyl (DIP Wrap). Easy to apply and easier to remove. I can't explain with my english vocabulary so i'll leave you with a video: https://youtu.be/dO1IteHIYiI You won't need to sand the bass and before you want to sell it you can remove the vivyl pulling it out. Atention: i don't know how well this paint works on a bass, with the constant contact with the bass player's body (its suposed to be very strong and hard wearing on cars). Somebody willing to try it please let us know how it worked out. Cheers
Someone mentioned this to me recently. First time I've seen that video though I'm guessing you'd need to separate the body, and remove the electrics first I'd also be tempted to mask the back edge of the body, and not spray that, as the paint itself looks like it could be scratched by belt buckles etc Might also cause a reaction with some peoples skin - so a word of caution there Very interesting though - thanks for posting
5.
......have decided not to go the DIY route and anyhow, Anaglypta is so 1970's
No, you're thinking of woodchip
6.
Yup, definitely something on the horizon. Should we see how many potential numbers we would get? Can decide on the size of venue we would need then? I'm thinking the Motorpoint Arena should cut it...
..... Or possibly the back room of Lower Machen community centre
7.
Currently leaning towards Anaglypta Wallpaper
Kex, have you asked whether Dave Dearnaley in Cardiff will do a refinish? Dave is an absolute top luthier. He's worked on several instruments of mine, and of pals over the years, and is brilliant He also makes custom built acoustic instruments of the very highest quality Might be worth giving him a call - 02920462953 Best of luck
8. The Squier Classic Vibe series are superb. I especially like their P basses. Fantastic built quality and value for money IMO I honestly think you won't get a better P for anything like this amount of cash GLWTS
9.
Its just a coincidence but I agree they do have plenty of bite and growl!
Definitely, I've had 2 precisions converted to P/J recently (one Squier CV, and one Fender RW) The Squier CV has a PBXN and JBXN, and it sounds huge. The RW has a JBXN and the stock Fender P pickup The CV definitely has that bit more bite, and I'll be changing the P pickup on the RW soon I really like Entwistle pickups - they're fab for the money. They sound great, and still retain a classic "vintage" type sound too If they were twice the price, they'd still be amazing value IMO PS. Don't tell them I said that Also, as someone else already said, the delivery service on ebay was brilliant I ordered 3 pickups, on separate occasions, and they all turned up 2 days later
10. Hi there chrisd783, Another South Walian here. I'm in Cardiff. I've met Mr FuNkShUi, top bloke, and Lewis seems a great guy too. Gelfin, one of the Mods on this forum puts on a local basschat meet from time to time If you see one soon, please come along & meet some more good folks of the low end around these parts Welcome to BC mate Da Bo Chi
11. PS. I've also had 2 Precisions converted to P/J in the last few months. It's a pickup configuration I really like
12. Squier do a nice lined fretless, in their Vintage Modified series. It's available as a P/J, and lined I've recently started to take fretless a little more seriously and have one. It's definitely a good starter fretless IMO The VM series are made in Indonesia, and are really good quality for the money Squier also do a PJ which is made in China - I tried 2 of these (fretted) and they're OK, but not as good as the Vintage Modified series..... I also liked the look of Retrovive's P bass fretless too, but that's unlined. Have fun searching EDIT: Here's a link to one at GAK in Brighton But I'm sure I've seen them nearer me, in GM (Gwent) Music for under £260 new http://www.gak.co.uk/en/squier-vintage-modified-precision-bass-pj-3-colour-sunburst/85160
13.
I can't find a manual for a 1715 combo. Closest are 1215 or 715 combos. Are you certain of the model number? Does the combo have a socket for an extension cab? .....
I was just going to ask if you had a manual, or if there was one available online.... Might be a good idea to search for one, or ask a friendly BC member might have one? Worth a try - so many BC members are helpful, maybe they can scan or photocopy a manual, or know of a link....
14. Yes, check the minimum specified load for the amp If it's 8 ohms you should not lower that, or you risk damaging the amplifier Connecting 2x 8ohm speakers in parallel with give you combined impedance of 4 ohms It should tell you on the plate at the back of the amp Does it have an extension speaker socket? If so, it should tell you the recommended impedance of extension cabs Good luck
15. DB mutes are available quite cheaply on ebay. A search for "DB / Upright Mute" should find you some http://www.ebay.co.u...SMAAOSw2GlXDxId My first DB was a Stagg EUB. Although I'd definitely recommend these as a starter instrument, especially at the price they go for used. I wouldn't recommend you go down that route. I've tried several EUB's and the best IMHO is the Emminence - I have one, and I really like it. It still feels like a "proper" DB to me, and the unplugged sound is very quiet - if a bit "weak" until you get used to it. Amplified, and with a bit of EQ'ing they really sound a lot like an acoustic DB - perhaps because they still have an acoustic body which behaves much like their larger cousins? There is also plenty of footage of famous and great players using them live, and I challenge you to close your eyes and not think it's a full bodied Double Bass. There were one or two Eminence's hanging around on the marketplace here a while back. So keep your eye out, or ask if anyone still has one (it may have been withdrawn). Also, I'm not sure where you're based, but if you're anywhere near South Wales you'd be welcome to come & try mine - or maybe there's another Basschat member near you who is willing to let you have a try of their Eminence? Worth asking.... I've heard some good reports & sound files of the Yamaha Silent bass in use - also sounds good to me, although like the Stagg, they're more of a stick bass with no acoustic body / chamber. Good luck with your search But most of all, don't worry - parenthood IS frightening, but you get by somehow - my lad is soon to be 24 and in fact, it was him who got me playing again after an absence of over 20 years
16. I've got a BH550 and I really like it However, after hearing an Orange Terror 500, one came up for sale, so I tried it out.... and bought it It all depends on what bass you're using, and what sort of sound you're after, of course I'm in several quite different bands, and also play a bit of DB. For most of the stuff I do, I can now see me using the Orange. I'm using it with a PJ Precision or Jazz, and it delivers nice warm tones Good luck with your search, and let us know what you find
17. Although I was never particularly a big fan of his music, the guy was an unquestionably huge talent. Wrote a lot of songs for other artists too, and a wide range of artists at that.... He liked to not give record companies or the music industry much control, and I admire that, and the way he did everything himself and kept control over his work The past 4 or 5 months have seen the demise of so much talent, it's unbelievable RIP Prince EDIT: I've this morning heard a radio report saying he had around a hundred albums worth of unreleased material - Staggering!
18. Yup. I had tennis elbow several years back. I was playing tennis & Squash at the time I ended up giving up tennis, and not playing squash for quite some time. It did clear up, but it took a while, and no sport for ages. The trouble with the condition, is that it is inflammation of the tendons, and /or the joint. And such inflammation can take forever to heal, as you can't help continuing to "use" that limb or joint. Have as much rest as possible. Get other band members to carry heavy speaker cabs. Try a support bandage, like tennis players wear - these can help, honestly Also, try an anti-inflammatory agent, like Ibuprophen. I especially found Voltarol Gel worked wonders when I pulled my calf muscle while playing squash. - Not the supposedly "better" more powerful 12 hour stuff - the ordinary gel - magic in a tube I thought. Be careful not to take Ibuprophen or other anti-inflammatories when you have used the gel though. And most importantly, ask your doctor! Such inflammations are a bu&&er - they can take ages to get better. All I can say is, good luck, and rest the joint as much as possible Also, try using a wrist support for your PC workstation - using a mouse and keyboard can cause the problem, if you're not using correct support and seating.... perhaps your employers have someone to advise this? It's a painful condition, I know
19.
It's London + vintage + big name bass player = stupidly expensive....
Yep. Pino is of course an excellent player, but this is stupidly expensive. What I can't get over, is that not so long ago, Norman Watt-Roy flogged his '62 Jazz - And I think he only got just over £3K for it. Astounding that a rather notable bass, from such a great player sold for, comparatively so little..... Mind you, I can't spend £3K on a bass
20. Pah, I really wanted this bass, as it's different from everything else I have - which is mostly Fender shaped Shame about this, and sorry for 6feet7 that this fab looking bass didn't sell - it was silly money for such a nice instrument Ah well, maybe the marketplace will pick up? Hope so.....
21. Thanks for your suggestion above thebuckets I have found a US P bass fretless neck on this very forum However, I really don't need another fretted P bass, or the neck of So if all goes well, I will sell the fretted neck from this bass, in order to recoup some costs I'll advertise the neck in due course - but anyone interested in a US P neck in near mint condition, going cheap - PM me
22. The new badge does look better But I'm afraid you have invalidated the warranty!
