Buying a broken bass for repair - amateur repair with pics
Marc S replied to Wonky2's topic in EUB and Double Bass
If you do end up repairing this yourself - Gorrilla glue is really strong. And I've heard of at least one luthier who uses it. Though I would say, I'd be tempted to get a luthier to fix it, and set it up. The soundpost is vital - so don't put the bridge & strings on if it isnt in place. Re strings, that's a whole can of worms, and hugely more varied than strings for bass guitar. If you want to play pizz (fingers) rather than bow - I found innovation silver slaps were a good start. They're reasonably priced, low tension + I found them much easier tension-wise than steel strings. Can't bow them though..... As others have ssid - you can get 2nd hand strings on here too. I'd opt to spend a bit more and get an adjudtable bridge You can then experiment to find a better action / set up for yourself Most of all though - this is an exciting new journey. Good luck -

Hi iamtheelvy, Yes, I think it is essentially the same amp head, which is / was available separately.... It's a better version of the earlier Mk 1 head. A pal of mine has exactly the same amp, but with the earlier Mk 1 head Same great sound, but you have to be more careful with active basses, or it cuts out This amp handles active basses really well yes, I would be happy to drive to Bristol to meet up (I often go there anyway) Cheers

As the title suggests, do you? Or is this slightly odd behaviour? I started this thread specifically in the DB section, in response to a thread in General discussion http://basschat.co.u...name-your-bass/ As it seems several DB players, like myself name their Double Basses, but not their bass guitars - Just wondering, like EDIT: Forgot to add, I call my David Gage "Czech Ease" Lady Georgina, and my Emminence EUB "Emma" or "Ems" And used to call my old Boosey & Hawkes "Brenda" or sometimes "Belinda" after a good friend - although that didn't stick, as the previous owner (Sarah T on here) called it / her "Bertha"
Glad its not just me! I stared naming things after farscape - In the season 4 companion (i think) Ben Browder said he got the idea from NASA that: "All important inanimate objects should be named after beautiful women." I've been calling all my bikes 'the beast' since i was about 10 because.... I probably should have grown out of it by now, but nah...
As I was typing my first reply, I started to feel a little uneasy, maybe even sort of "ashamed" or that I was confessing to something But I'm glad you started this thread, because you are obviously not the only one, and of course, neither am I Several DB players seem to have replied, and said, like me, they name DB's not bass guitars and it has me wondering whether all DB players name their basses?

We recently auditioned a keyboardist. Our ad had stated that we played a wide range of music, including Reggae and Ska (among the usual Rock, pop etc). The guy replied, we gave him 6 songs - then he kept stalling as to his availability. Eventually turned up for the audition, and clearly hadn't learned the songs - just the riffs, and tried to play the riffs over everything. We had told him in advance which songs differed in key to the original, but he didn't seem to know how to change key - even though he had a transpose button / control. Then when he obviously didn't / couldn't get the feel of the one Reggae & 2 ska tunes we gave him, he said "I'm more of a Rock player really" - even though he'd previously said he'd been dep in a Ska band Even though he'd eventually had many weeks to learn 6 songs - he clearly had either spent no time learning them, or had spent ages and still couldn't play relatively simple stuff.... He kept telling us of the "loads of Rock bands" he'd been in, and the loads of gigs he'd done over the years and how this was only his cheap keyboard, and how "my other keyboard is a such & such 5 grand...." and how "my other, main gigging amp is a such & such..." etc. It was very disappointing, as we really need a keys player atm. The guy said he was very experienced, and I even think he thought the audition went well. His parting comment was "send me the other 30 songs, and I should have them sorted in a fortnight" lol
I'm shocked they had NO contacts for you. I'll speak to our player see if he knows anyone for you mate
Cheers for that matey One tutor seemed interested - but only if I / we supplied him with the dots! -
Not electric basses, but my double bass is called Meghan...
Ah, I'm definitely not the only one then ... and is it only acceptable to name double basses?

Ha ha, and I thought it was just me! I don't name bass guitars, or amps or anything like that But when it comes to double basses, my DB is called "Lady Georgina" and my EUB is called "Emma" - I have no idea why they have these names, or why I would name them anyway .... maybe it's just a sign of madness anyway? But who cares? lol

Tried messaging local tutors - still no luck Surely someone out there wants to earn some dosh - gigs waiting! Bumpity bump - if you know of any mates who play keys, and would suit this, please let me know -
Hello and welcome ProfJames Yes, get yourself a bass asap Try out as many as you can first, and go for what's most comfortable to play Lots and lots of online lessons Scottsbasslessons are good as RickyV says Maybe try out a local tutor too - just to get you on the right track, and before you develop as many bad habits as I did EDIT: You don't say where you're based, but an excellent tutor who is local to me, Jon Caulfield in Cardiff Does a free first lesson, which is great, cos he can asses where you're at and what you need to work on, before you start spending loads of money on lessons & gear. Maybe some tutors local to you offer a similar sort of thing?
Yes, apologies for that - I took some photos (with my phone) and they weren't great I should really not be so lazy, and do it properly lol Anyhow, in the meantime, here's a couple of links - so interested BC'ers can read up and see what these amps look like Mine is in great condition - it looks new anyway http://www.carvinaudio.com/products/mb10 http://www.bassgear....cro-bass-combo/ Bump
Good call Marc. Good thing with the Italian ones is they are likely to hold their value better, especially when they get harder to find in a year or two. Having said that, these were originally around £1000 new if I remember correctly.
Yes, they were £1, 100 new at one time. Good point re them possibly becoming harder to find. These are seriously good combos. Just thinking of other trade options - I'd love karlfers roadworn p But may also consider a Limelight But someone buy this quick - or I'm going to regret letting karlfers RW P pass by
