I have a Kala Uke bass and it's amazing Loud enough to hear yourself just jamming away But when plugged into an amp - Wow! It sounds amazing. Really light weight and tiny and compact to carry around The only thing I'd say as a bit of a negative, is the rubber strings take a bit of getting used to I'd still prefer the rubber strings to the synthetic gut types though as I find there's a lot less "drag" and you don't need to cover your hands with talcum powder, like you do for some synthetic strings It's only a minor point anyway - I'd recommend trying one Good luck in your search

Hi Iain, Though I mostly play bass guitar, I also play DB in one band, and sometimes Acoustic BG I've heard several comments (mostly on here) that smaller speakers tend to be better suited to DB I think it was said to be something to do with string dynamics and recovery time of the smaller speakers being faster.... Anyhow, I've got pretty good DB sound via my Markbass CMD 210 combo But I also use a Phil Jones 4 x 5 cab - either as extension to the Markbass, or on its' own, with a PJ head. I know what you mean about the boomy sound - I used to use a Markbass 1 x15 and that sounded great with Bass guitar, but quite boomy with acoustic, and worse with DB (Edit: so maybe there's something in the above theory?) The 4 x 5 is definitely more focussed, and the low midrange frequencies are clearer I recently heard a DB player using a PJ suitcase, and that sounded lovely He told me it was absolutely fine for most small / medium gigs on its own and for larger gigs he used the extension cab, which he said was still absolutely fine, even for quite large gigs... Although these may not be expensive, and although I have too many basses already, I've been GASsing for one of these lately [url="http://www.gak.co.uk/en/squier-classic-vibe-p-bass-70s-black/101104?gclid=CJbX9ff2y8cCFRGeGwodIPMIjg"]http://www.gak.co.uk...CFRGeGwodIPMIjg[/url] They look fabulous I recently sold my Squier CV 60's P bass, in Fiesta Red (which was my backup for one of the bands I'm in) and bought a USA P - which is also lovely But I instantly regretted selling the Squier!! I missed the Squier so much, I went out & bought another, 2nd hand I know some folk won't believe it, but comparing the 2 side by side There's not that much in it, in terms of quality, comfort, playability & sound The US is a tad lighter weight, and only very very slightly punchier sounding..... Haven't played the 70's CV P in black yet - but I love the maple board, with blocks I saw one in the flesh a few weeks back, but resisted a try, as I knew I'd want it - it looked soooo good And if my 60's CV P bass is anything to go by - this 70's one will be a knockout! Is it daft? But as I have too many already, should I consider selling the US and buying one of these? My US is near mint, and lovely - but I am always wary, taking a mint / near mint bass out gigging Since getting my RW Jazz, I'd never realised how liberating it is to take out a bass that already has some knocks & bumps Or even a mint Squier, as it's not such a big deal if one of these gets a ding, rather than a mint US bass Hmmmm..... EDIT: Or, as I'm a fan of Limelights, perhaps I should commission Mark to do a light relic version of this bass? Oh no! I really want one of these Squiers!

I have to say, B-E-A-D tuning really appeals to me... I just find the the string spacing on a 5 string is not to my liking mainly on the right hand.... I usually find there's not quite enough space between the strings, for my playing style I have a cheap Squier 5 string P bass and the spacing on this bass is much better, but the downside to increased string spacing, is that my left hand struggles with the extra width of the neck... I also do find that years of playing 4 strings means that I do sometimes play the wrong string with my right hand I've been trying to train myself to accommodate the extra string, and it has improved a little But I think I'd be to wary to gig with a 5 string as of yet It's also noticeably heavier than any of my 4 strings EDIT - so that may also impact on my desire / ability to play a long-ish gig (at my age!) Let us know what you decide, and how you get on But I think it's gotta be worth a try Maybe pick up a cheap 2nd hand bass as an experiment? Or use your least favourite bass you currently have?

It's great that you don't feel threatened or intimidated by a great player I'm sure there are some who would be.... And it's good that you feel inspired and full of new ideas on your own playing Treat it as some free inspiration and lessons and good luck

Having regretted selling my Squier CV P bass in Fiesta Red and having thought about getting one again, on an almost daily basis I broke my own one-in-one-out rule and bought another, identical one secondhand, from a local Facebook gear for sale forum Since selling the last one, I bought a rather nice USA P bass from Old Horse Murphy on this fine forum and I really have been converted back to P basses since then Comparing the CV P bass, with the US There really isn't much in it, in terms of quality of build, comfort, playability and sound The US P feels slightly lighter - although I've not backed this up by weighing the 2 basses and the pickup on the US bass has a slightly louder pickup, with a little more "grunt" EDIT: But I'd stress there really isn't very much in it.... And having paid only around a third of the cost of the 2nd hand US bass for the 2nd hand China made CV bass The quality of the Squier is absolutely staggering! I tried a secondhand Matt Freeman in the meantime too, and was equally impressed by that But I just had to go for the 60's Fiesta Red P again.... I think these could be future classics, regarded in similar vein to the early Japan built "JV" Squiers The nut on my Squier feels pretty tough - no issues so far, on either that I've owned PS. I'm now lusting after the CV Jazz, with maple board & block inlays ..... oh no!

Yes, definitely the spacing at the bridge is most important for me I used to prefer much slimmer necks (mostly when playing with a pick) But found I couldn't dig in so well, when playing finger style So string spacing at the bridge is important to me... In my 1st spell of playing (many years back) I owned a 70's Precision Which had a chunky neck, at the nut end. This tended to make my left hand tired (aside from which, the bass itself was v heavy) So I moved towards slimmer necks, notably on Ibanez basses.... Nowadays, playing more & more finger-style, I much prefer wider spacing at the bridge and I suppose the spacing at the nut at least gives you an indication of taper Again, this can be important for the left hand, when you play down the bottom end quite a bit That early 70's P put me off Fenders for a long time ... until I discovered the neck on my RW Jazz As well as being an awesome neck that somehow feels very aged and worn-in It's got ideal (for me) string spacing at the bridge and a nice taper at the nut, for maximum comfort for my left hand.... I guess if the specs mention spacing at the bridge, it should also quote spacing at the nut too.....

I've now got a newer USA P, and a Squier Classic Vibe P, which have both got slimmer, shallower necks They're much more comfortable to play than that old US P So sort the grounding issue on your Jazz, Then sell your P bass, and get a Squier CV P bass - and pocket some cash too
