From the sound clips I've heard, The Yamaha Silent bass sounds pretty amazing, and very like an acoustic DB It's worth trying the Fishman on the bass, of course, as an experiment.... Let us know what you think - I'd be interested to know how it compares

Depends on the music / band situation you're in But as most of us tend to be in bands with guitars, then yes, it's a good idea I can strum a few chords, but I'm not great on guitar But being able to play those chords helps me recognise what a guitarist is doing Handy for open-mics or jams with musicians and songs you don't know.... I'd say it hasn't really made me a better player per-say - but I can join in and jam more because of it So that should improve some elements of my playing, if only a little.... Knowledge of other instruments should help listening skills and theory too So yes, always good to have an understanding of what other instruments are doing If only those other musicians better understood the function of bass.... lol

Lol I know what you mean OP Older P's just feel too chunky to me In fact, they've felt that way a while It even put me off Fenders altogether As I too had thought J necks were a little too slim.... What amazes me, is how different individual necks can seem I've got 2 Fender Jazzes, one Roadworn, and a US 72 re-issue The RW, apart from being an exceptional bass, has what I consider the most comfortable neck ever My '72 re-issue has a slightly slimmer neck Although it's actually only a slight difference, it doesn't feel quite as comfy I had a 90's Jazz at one point too The neck on this was nice - a bit chunkier than my RW, and not as chunky as a P bass I'd say try a few different models The Classic Vibe Squier P is an amazing bass for the money and the neck is brilliant - about the same as my RW Jazz Good luck, and enjoy your search

Keep your favourite of the bunch sell the rest, and start looking for the next one There's bound to be something to tempt you .... something better out there.... Go to guitar shops,and just try a few basses you hadn't considered before Gotta get your GAS back But most important of all - make sure you keep your MOJO Good luck EDIT: I'm now in a position where I love all my gear .... I have a Roadworn Fender Jazz. These unbelievably fab basses are MIM It's honestly the best bass I've ever owned, or even played I also have a US Jazz, that is superb But the MIM Roadworn is by far the better bass I replaced the pickups with some Dimarzios, and it now has a fuller sound Still with that vintage Fender tone.... The quality and feel of Fender Roadworn basses is just amazing It really "feels" like it's been played for years & years I wouldn't swap it for anything

Hi Roj, There used to be a band called "from Chorley" But I think that was more than 25 years ago - so you obviously weren't in the band Hello from Cardiff, and welcome to BC

I've not tried them personally, but I've heard good reports on the Entwistle pickups They do 2 versions, and the more powerful one seems to be what people prefer... Hey that bass is great! And spotting this thread is topical for me... Saw the Stranglers in Cardiff last night They were really good But I was disappointed that Jet Black didn't play I had hoped to see him for what may be his last tour.... JJ was still in great shape though Still playing fab, and adding the odd Karate kick JJ, his playing, his sound etc etc and those early Stranglers albums are what got me into bass too Such an inspiration - and yes, why have Fender not made a signature JJ bass? Glad to see you have - loverly stuff

I know what you mean about the wide P neck In my 1st era of bass playing (many years back now!) I had an early 70's P It was a nice example of a P bass, but the chunky neck put me off Fenders I love the look & tone of an old Fender But I much prefer a Jazz profile neck these days Taking the route of trying & owning several different brands / types of bass It took me ages to find that the modern C shape Fender necks are the most comfortable for me.... Anyhow, what you've done is some fab work there Rumple The bass looks great, and if it sounds great too - then bingo! I'd persist with playing it for a while You may even find you adapt your playing, or get used to the neck.... If not, at the very least you have created a nice bass, and learned some valuable lessons ... and I'm sure someone who likes P profile necks will want this bass Great stuff good sir Cheers again Marc

Looks a great colour Dazed Yes, I too was impressed with the "feel" Mark manages to get The finish on the necks of his basses really do feel as if they've been played for years & years... Lucky you colleya - don't forget to post pics when it arrives ... so I can feel jealous!

PS. Quick question for Lenny - as if he hasn't been helpful enough.. Is that Jamey Abersold book written in standard musical notation, or is it also in TAB for those of us who don't read music... Cheers again
