You don't have to justify it at all I looked at this thread, just because I've seen so much anti-Rick nonsense on here lately and I wanted to read some positive stuff I once had a Faker - a Shaftesbury, which was absolutely brilliant also had a Rick at one time, but for the sake of comfortable playing (and this includes several other brands of bass) I've moved towards a Jazz profile neck I still love the look and sound of a Rick They look great, and can sound awesome When I listen to one of my fave albums ever - the Black Album, by the Damned (bass by Paul Gray) and anything by the Jam - I just don't think any other bass can quite sound the same..... I wish Rickenbacker weren't so over-zealous re copies but that's just my opinion..... As I said - you don't have to justify your Rick to anyone Just enjoy it.... and it's great to hear from someone who does EDIT: Gelfin on this fine forum has a Rick he challenges anyone to play, and not like and you know what? - It's a lovely bass, super comfortable and with that distinct Rick tone Although I have too many basses already, I'd buy it from him, if he wanted to sell.....
Don't get me started on this.... Too much American TV is my theory as to the source of most of the annoyances. Even worse because I work for a global company whose headquarters in in the USA. So some examples: I'm good - just does not sound right Good to Go = I'm ready
+1 in agreement here Although some of my favourite television programmes are also from the USA eg. Cheers, Frasier, Big Bang Theory etc etc) I particularly dislike it when the word "like" is thrown into a sentence far too often "I said like, whoa, and she said like, you wha like an' I was like duh, like so she says like, you kno what I mean like, an' like I was all like...... I often hear such meaningless drawl, and think to myself "what the hell was that all about? I mean, did anyone actually construct a whole sentence? and did anyone actually say anything at all?" ......."like"
Anyone know what Pups they put in the Limelight P's?
I think they're his own pickups, handwound by Mark himself.....
You could always ask him direct and cut out the middle man?
Yes indeed - Mark is usually very helpful, and will reply pretty promptly in my experience

From the sound clips I've heard, The Yamaha Silent bass sounds pretty amazing, and very like an acoustic DB It's worth trying the Fishman on the bass, of course, as an experiment.... Let us know what you think - I'd be interested to know how it compares

Should every bass player play at least a little bit of guitar
Marc S replied to CHW's topic in General Discussion
Depends on the music / band situation you're in But as most of us tend to be in bands with guitars, then yes, it's a good idea I can strum a few chords, but I'm not great on guitar But being able to play those chords helps me recognise what a guitarist is doing Handy for open-mics or jams with musicians and songs you don't know.... I'd say it hasn't really made me a better player per-say - but I can join in and jam more because of it So that should improve some elements of my playing, if only a little.... Knowledge of other instruments should help listening skills and theory too So yes, always good to have an understanding of what other instruments are doing If only those other musicians better understood the function of bass.... lol -
When you realise you can no longer play a Precision neck...
That's where the problem is. Stop it. You are playing bass.
That's what I was going to say! Lol I know what you mean OP Older P's just feel too chunky to me In fact, they've felt that way a while It even put me off Fenders altogether As I too had thought J necks were a little too slim.... What amazes me, is how different individual necks can seem I've got 2 Fender Jazzes, one Roadworn, and a US 72 re-issue The RW, apart from being an exceptional bass, has what I consider the most comfortable neck ever My '72 re-issue has a slightly slimmer neck Although it's actually only a slight difference, it doesn't feel quite as comfy I had a 90's Jazz at one point too The neck on this was nice - a bit chunkier than my RW, and not as chunky as a P bass I'd say try a few different models The Classic Vibe Squier P is an amazing bass for the money and the neck is brilliant - about the same as my RW Jazz Good luck, and enjoy your search -

Keep your favourite of the bunch sell the rest, and start looking for the next one There's bound to be something to tempt you .... something better out there.... Go to guitar shops, and just try a few basses you hadn't considered before Gotta get your GAS back But most important of all - make sure you keep your MOJO Good luck EDIT: I'm now in a position where I love all my gear .... I'd like a Limelight too - but must resist (for the moment), cos I have too much stuff already

I have a Roadworn Fender Jazz. These unbelievably fab basses are MIM It's honestly the best bass I've ever owned, or even played I also have a US Jazz, that is superb But the MIM Roadworn is by far the better bass I replaced the pickups with some Dimarzios, and it now has a fuller sound Still with that vintage Fender tone.... The quality and feel of Fender Roadworn basses is just amazing It really "feels" like it's been played for years & years I wouldn't swap it for anything

Hi there JPJ Welcome to BC and welcome out from the shadows.... and a big hello from South Wales Croeso, and shw-mae butt
-
Hi Roj, There used to be a band called "from Chorley" But I think that was more than 25 years ago - so you obviously weren't in the band Hello from Cardiff, and welcome to BC

I've not tried them personally, but I've heard good reports on the Entwistle pickups They do 2 versions, and the more powerful one seems to be what people prefer... One positive note, is that they are relatively cheap So not too much outlay for an experiment http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Entwistle-PBXN-Neodymium-pickup-for-bass-guitar-/331409282006?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d298853d6

SOLD Ibanez SR500 Price Drop £200 Collected - Trade for your Jazz or ATK
Marc S replied to Davy's topic in Basses For Sale
I had one of these They're fantastic basses for the money IMHO I only sold mine, as I had too many basses, and the necks on these are rather thinner than I have moved towards But if you like slim, fast necks - this bass is for you Awesome tone, build quality and playability Superb Bartolini pickups & electronics too Have a free bump, for an absolute bargain -
Hey that bass is great! And spotting this thread is topical for me... Saw the Stranglers in Cardiff last night They were really good But I was disappointed that Jet Black didn't play I had hoped to see him for what may be his last tour.... JJ was still in great shape though Still playing fab, and adding the odd Karate kick JJ, his playing, his sound etc etc and those early Stranglers albums are what got me into bass too Such an inspiration - and yes, why have Fender not made a signature JJ bass? Glad to see you have - loverly stuff

I know what you mean about the wide P neck In my 1st era of bass playing (many years back now!) I had an early 70's P It was a nice example of a P bass, but the chunky neck put me off Fenders I love the look & tone of an old Fender But I much prefer a Jazz profile neck these days Taking the route of trying & owning several different brands / types of bass It took me ages to find that the modern C shape Fender necks are the most comfortable for me.... Anyhow, what you've done is some fab work there Rumple The bass looks great, and if it sounds great too - then bingo! I'd persist with playing it for a while You may even find you adapt your playing, or get used to the neck.... If not, at the very least you have created a nice bass, and learned some valuable lessons ... and I'm sure someone who likes P profile necks will want this bass Great stuff good sir Cheers again Marc
Thanks very much Marc. I may well revert back to EUB at some point in the future
I'd definitely consider it For me personally, I don't know how I'd get through a week without either a DB or bass guitar to play Take it from me (who gave up for around 25 years!) You'll miss it, and you may not even realise how much you'll miss it.... Hope your wrist problems will allow you to play an EUB soon Have a free bump GLWTS, but most of all - good luck with your wrist Cheers again
