  1. Not played a bad Fender Japan bass yet. Always top quality, but this one just looks absolutely awesome. Nice relic job, great colour
  2. Nice looking bass @Clarky Gotta love a PJ. I don't need one, as I've been thinning the herd myself but if I did........ Out of interest, what was the super light P bass you went for? Hope you are well good sir
  3. Just adding this view of the same area, photographed in different (less harsh) lighting. Just pointing out that the vertical "lines" around the pickups are reflections of the strings, of course. This bass is rather shiny.
  4. I had a noodle on a Squier CV Mustang the other day. And I was instantly smitten! I'd played short scale basses before, but this one looked rather nice, it felt lovely to play, and sounded really decent too. The neck on the CV is lovely. So I'm tempted to pick a Mustang up now - having said I was on a mission to thin the collection.... doh! Belated happy NBD 😀
  5. I tried to photograph the worst of the scratches & swirls. The bass is very glossy and some of them just didn't show that well. This is possibly the worst area, and looks worse in the low angled bright sunlight I needed, to get it to show. Apologies, I was in the middle of cleaning both my P basses, and hadn't spotted that there was a lot of dust still on this one, esp near the neck. (static electricity, maybe). Looking at it again, the fretboard is a lovely dark rosewood. EDIT : the cross lighting in the close-up photo makes the defects look worse than they are IMO. Also, I just retouched that area on the back of the bass, with some gloss black, and that looks a bit tidier now too....
  6. Just adding the photo of the damage & "repair" on the back. It was a quick option at the time, and has worked OK, even though it doesn't look great. I had intended to get some more modellers filler, and some red paint, to improve its' appearance (my little pot of red enamel paint had dried up) But tbh, I haven't really looked at it again even though it's a simple "fix" - again, I don't think too much about it, as it's on the back and out of sight most of the time. I'd also forgotten that the neck heel has a tilt mechanism. When it was set up - this was set with the hex screw as fully "backed-off" i.e. unengaged. EDIT: I described it as "buckle rash" but looking at it now, my belt buckle wouldn't be around there - depends where & how low you play, I suppose.
  7. Really not sure I should be selling this, as it was part of the plan to future-proof my playing, as it is just so lightweight and easy on the shoulder and left hand joints. It weighs only around 3.2 or 3.3kg (I'll double check later). It has active electronics and sounds lovely. You can get typical P tones from it, but add a bit of Jazz "burble". The neck is also very slim (slimmer than some Fender J's) and very easy on the left hand. As for construction quality, it is a usual top drawer Fender Japan instrument. This bass has obviously been gigged quite a bit, and has quite a number of swirls & dings, chips etc - which I will photograph later. On the rear, there's an area of buckle-rash / paint chipping, and I decided to fill this area with modellers filler, to protect the wood and help prevent further chips to the edges of the finish. It looks a bit rough, but it's on the back and is doing its' job. Again, photos later. After purchase, I had the bass set up, with a fret level, dress & polish, professionally (I'll send Luthier details if you need them - chap called Ben in Penarth). Bags of life left in the frets. I had planned to mainly use this bass for gigging (hence not being worried about it being mint) - but now I always reach for my Classic 50's Fiesta Red Fender P, whether at home, rehearsals or gigging - it has become my "go-to" and all-time favouite bass every time. I'm thinking I might possibly go for something rather different to my usual choice of bass - so am reluctantly putting this up for sale. (Never thought I'd sell, but I've been on something of a clear-out lately - as I may be taking early retirement from full-time work next year). I don't want to post this bass - so Collection only (or may be able to meet somewhere half-way). Absolutely NO TRADES - I'm only selling to thin the herd.... and to maybe await that "different bass" - but take my time over it. I promised Mrs S I wouldn't buy before selling another. More pics later. These have rocketed in second-hand value in recent years, but I think the price reflects the chips & dings etc EDIT: Just putting this out there - I may be tempted by a trade, for a Mustang bass - but I'm specifically after one with P/J pickups. Not bothered whether it's a Fender or a Squier as long as it's a P/J. Cash either way or straight swap, depending on value of the Mustang EDIT2 - I'm possibly going to see a Mustang midweek.
  8. EDIT: Price drop - have I priced this too highly? Now £60 + P&P £55 + P&P For sale. Electroharmonix Octave Multiplexer. (Octave up & down). I bought this new, when I briefly had a Wingbass - but I didn't keep that long. This pedal never left the house, and was only taken out of the box 2 or 3 times. Absolute mint condition. No velcro on the back. I'm thinning my gear collection. Collect from Cardiff, or I can post for cost (I'd prefer to post insured) so NO TRADES Except # see below # EDIT: #ONE Possible trade added - I'm now looking for a stomp-box, and willing to add cash# EDIT 2 #Another possible trade, is that I'm looking for an acoustic pickup with volume control (something like a few of the Shadow range) - to fit to my Bouzouki #
  9. Not a gimmick at all. It's your bass - it's up to you. Personally, I quite like the look of an acrylic bass - to some it may look a bit 80's or early 90's but that's OK anyway. Only avoid if you play regularly in a nudist camp! Lol 😉
  10. I recently sold my Squier CV precision in the same (and rather nice) colour. I did so only because I had too many.... and tended to favour & gig my more recently acquired P bass. I really miss that CV though. To anyone thinking about buying this bass- go for it. They are incredibly well made, great sounding, lovely players. I would add that I don't know the seller - but I do know I miss my bass, and already wish I could have justified putting it away in a case somewhere. Definitely a future classic.
  11. How is that in such amazing condition... right down to the truss rod screw head? Absolutely stunning
  12. You're quite right, they don't have a tweeter. I always had a preference for a cab with a tweeter. My Epifani UL110 has one, and I always liked the tweeter in that cab. I especially like the level of control of the tweeter in the UL110, it can be really finely "tweaked" to just the level you want. For larger gigs, I tend to use my Markbass 210 traveller plus the UL110 and was always happy with that combination. I bought the Elf 1x10 cab though, as it's so light & compact, and I sometimes want to use the UL110 and the Elf cab - and that can also be a nice combination, as it gives me the full 500W from my EVO1 head (unlike using the MB 210 alone). Even though the Elf has no tweeter, I'm really happy with the range of tones from the rig. Yes, I'd have a bit more control over certain frequencies - but I get decent enough tonal options from the EVO1 head anyway. I've used the Elf and the MB210 for several gigs now, and I'm really happy with it. I perhaps need to dial in a bit more top end than when using the Epifani cab with the tweeter - but I'm just as happy with the results, especially as the Elf 1x10 is more compact than the Epifani. I would be tempted to sell the Epifani cab at this point, bar the fact that for some smaller gigs I tend to either just use the Epifani, or sometimes add the Elf 1x10 - and this rig is surprisingly loud, given that it's 500W through just two 10" speakers. Also, it works really well with upright. EDIT: I meant to add; I wouldn't describe the Elf 1x10 as "dark" either - it seems to produce a lovely tonal range, and sits well when I use it alone, or with either of my other two cabs. EDIT2: I used the MB210 and the Elf 1x10 for a full band outdoor gig last Sunday, and it more than coped - plenty of headroom. Another bass player who was present said he thought the bass sounded great
  13. Great! Let us know what you think. Sadly, due to work / family stuff / etc I'm not getting to spend enough time with mine. But hoping to fix that over the next few days. It's lots of fun though 😀
  14. I'd be interested to see what you think, when you do your comparison. Of course, it's going to sound quite different- but a side by side comparison is always useful. I haven't played mine through a gigging amp yet. Even through my home / practice amp, it sounds nothing like any of my other basses.
  15. These Trace 1x10 cabs are incredibly light. I have an Epifani UL110 cab, which is awesome. The Elf 1x10 cab is even smaller though, and even lighter still. Its so easy to carry one in one hand.
  16. Hi Harry. The shape of the bass is very similar (from my memory of my old one). It's a similar weight and "feel" in terms of the body contours and neck shape / profile. It's a lot louder than the other one though - probably down to the metal strings, as opposed to the rubber ones. I must admit, I prefer it aesthetically too - I really like the "f-holes" on the front. I think it took so long, because there were supply issues here in the UK. I could have got one sooner if I'd bought it from Germany. Online there seemed to be plenty there. However, I wasn't particularly in a rush, and feared how much import duty would cost. I tend to play pub jams using my Cort Steinberger clone, as that's lightweight and pretty compact. This Kala is even more so, of course. The journeyman was also considerably cheaper than my previous model of Kala U-bass. Though since ordering mine, I note they've gone up in price again. (They seem to be around £319 now - I think mine was £289 ).
  17. I posted a question about the Kala "Journeyman" U-bass some time back. I'd not seen one in the flesh, and wanted to try one out. Several months back, when in my local PMT branch, I was discussing this version of the U-bass with a staff member I often chat to. He suggested I order one, and if I didn't like it - I could simply return it. So I ordered one, and it took several months to arrive. So long in fact, I'd almost forgotten it. Apparently, there weren't any in the UK, and bear in mind that the UK distribution centre is just a few miles up the road from me. I'd previously owned a Kala U-bass, and as I've mentioned before - I just didn't get on with the strings. I know others have said that's not an issue.... but for me it was - so I ended up just not playing it. Anyhow, on spotting the Journeyman, I felt like trying again, especially as the one I'd seen online had flatwound strings. Mine has rounds - but that's OK. In any case it would be a simple swap to fit flats (wouldn't it?). My first thoughts were that I had more of an instant bond with this than the last one. The strings felt a much better / more comfortable gauge, "feel" and tension. Moreover I instantly liked the sound too. It's quite different to the rubber string version. It sounds less DB-like (which was one factor I liked about the other version) but still sounded great anyway. It's also very loud unplugged - notably more than the version with rubber strings. I'd say it's possibly as loud as my old Ibanez acoustic bass.... maybe. Amplified, it's got very different sound characteristics to any of my bass guitars. I can still get a tone that's a little like an uprtight (ish). Now I need to play it more to get used to the scale, and I need to take it to rehearsal to see what it sounds like in the mix. I'm looking forward to taking it to one of the folk club pub-jams I sometimes tag along to. Very happy

  19. Thanks for your thoughts @FranticsmurfIt was the clarity of sound from the Elf combo that drew my attention. There were several customers in the shop at the time, including someone else, shredding away on electric six string, plus some music being piped through a PA system. The member of staff was actually just using the amp to quickly test a couple of items. As I say, its' volume and clarity drew my attention (that, and the fact I'd got the cab, but not had a chance to play around with the combo). Usually, when you plug into an amp in a music shop, you get all sorts of noise and low-end frequencies bouncing around - but the combo was really clear and punchy. The first bass I heard through it was a 5 string, and that low B sounded superb. I the guy then handed me a Jazz bass to plug into the amp, and it also sounded incredible. Other BC members and a few on YouTube have said how great the combo is when combined with a 1x10 extension cab. I must say, I was also tempted to ask to try the 2x8 Elf cab too - but that may have left me wanting yet another cab EDIT: Has anyone else on here got the 1x10 combo plus a 1x10 cab... or even a 2x8 Elf cab? I'd really like to hear your thoughts about how well the amp copes at a gig or one of those very loud rehearsals
  20. I realise it has been a while since I last posted on this thread - but I just thought I'd add this comment. I popped into my local PMT the other day, and one of the staff I often speak to was playing through a Trace Elliot Elf 1x10 combo amp (which is basically the cab I have, with an inbuilt amp head. I was blown away by just how loud it was, and by the clarity of sound from it. I had a little noodle, and play with the controls, and I really liked it. I was half tempted to get it I must say. It would further reduce the weight and size of my gigging rig - however, I then remembered just how much I like my MB Evo1 head, and the fact that I sometimes need 2 separately controlled inputs..... still tempting though!
  21. Sold my Squier CV Precision yesterday - I needed to thin the herd......
But I still miss that lovely instrument. Will I be looking for another in the coming months? lol

      LewisK1975

Every time I look at mine, I think maybe I should sell it, but it's so nice.  Can't bear to part with it, even if I only pick it up occasionally..

  22. Awesome playing, great groove. And yes - that Jazz bass tone
  23. I was about to suggest this. I once had a Jazz bass with DiMarzios fitted. It sounded brilliant - like a Jazz, but with more "bite" - it cut through the mix better, in a gig situation
