  1. Here come the young - Martyn Joseph
  2. Thanks for letting us know @Woodinblack What sort of sound(s) were you able to get from it? e.g. anything "Precision-like", "Jazz-like" or "MM-like"? etc
  3. Midnight summer dream - the Stranglers
  4. Hi @petebassist Yes, the Quebe Sisters are amazing. Their guitarist was a really knowledgeable bloke, really nice guy too. I attended a workshop / chat session with them while I was there. The guitarist had played with all sorts of famous people, including Elvis! Said bass player had played with Duke Ellington (again, if a Czech Ease is good enough for him! lol) Amazing backing band But the Quebe Sisters themselves came from a completely non-musical family / background. One of the sisters started playing the violin, so the others took it up, and they all became brilliant. They were All Texas Fiddle Champions at one time. Then they started singing, and a studio team said "Wow - when did you learn 3 part harmonies?" To which their reply was "What's that?". Such beautiful voices, great musicians, really nice songs.... and top that with the fact they're all really nice people. I know cos I was sat less than 2m from them. I attended that workshop because after seeing them onstage, I thought I'd probably never get chance again.
  5. Yes, it's a David Gage Czech-Ease. I've got one and I can confirm it's a lovely bass. So I'll ignore NickA's comment lol Mine is a lovely player, with a fairly slim neck. Due to their smaller body size & acoustic chamber, they're a tad quieter than most other acoustic uprights, but it's a lovely sound nonetheless. As well as being lighter, they're obviously that bit easier to cart around. There is a hard case available for them, as well as a quite nicely padded gigbag. I've also seen Danny Thompson playing one, and it sounded and looked great. The first time I saw one was onstage at Cambridge Folk Festival - the bass player from a band called "The Quebe Sisters" had one. It certainly sounded fab when he was playing it. They're not often seen in the UK - so best of luck with your search.
  6. Don't think I saw that one, but I've seen some fab work by Jabba. His workmanship looks absolute top-drawer. Happy NBD
  7. Pigs on the wing - Pink Floyd
  8. Down to the river to pray - Alison Krauss
  9. I don't personally know the seller - but I just wanted to say, I have one of these (well, I've got the Blackstar version, which is apparently exactly the same and even made in the same factory) These are useful little things. You can jam along to 6 different drum patterns, for a bit of warming-up / exercise, and you can plug an MP3 player, CD player or phone into it and jam along with that too. Useful little devices IMO, I use mine a lot. £20 is a bargain... just saying
  10. Another fan of Fast Fret here. I've been using it for quite some time, and not noticed any build-up of anything nor any staining / discolouration. It definitely keeps roundwound strings brighter for a bit longer. I only occasionally need to clean my Flatwound strings with Fast Fret - usually, I just wipe them down with a soft cloth after playing.
  11. I have come back to Sunburst basses, after a short while of them being out of favour for me. There are probably so many around, that they are seen as common - however, I think of the finish as Classic. Everyone should have one in their collection IMO. Perhaps the finish suits a P more than a Jazz - but I've no argument with someone who loves their burst J bass. I tend to prefer a 3 tone sunburst over a 2TSB. I now only have a cheap self-assembled P/J (from Squier parts) - I should really continue to thin the herd, but I just can't bring myself to sell this rather nice bass .......after all, it would leave me without a Sunburst bass at all EDIT: Of course, the most important thing is that the owner likes the colour / finish of his or her bass. So that's the only thing that really matters.
  12. I had one of these, and it was my main gigging amp. I used it for anything from tiny acoustic events, 4 and 5 piece acoustic jams, and larger, louder, rock gigs. It always coped well, had plenty of headroom and always sounded great. Yes indeed, when you attach 2x 8 ohm cabs or a 4 ohm cab, you get the full 550W. What I really liked about this head was that it was so easy to use, and it's compact & lightweight. I carted it around in an old laptop bag, which had plenty of pockets for leads etc. I would have kept my TC BH550, if I hadn't needed an amp with 2 separately controlled channels (1x for BG and 1x for Upright). GLWTS - this is a bargain, given that you get the bag and the footswitch included.
  13. You say the action is low - but make sure the E string isn't too close to the pickup. Although this can often mean that you get a higher level of output from individual strings, I have found previously that it can adversely affect the E string. The theory is that if the string is too close, the magnet can dampen the strings vibrations. Worth a whirl trying to lower it a tad anyway. I find that I have to lower the top of the pickups slightly more than you may think... What strings are you using, out of interest? Best of luck sorting it
  14. Thanks for sharing that video @PaulWarning Still one of my fave bass lines ever
  15. Hi @Clarky - just wondered exactly what sort of bass you're after? Stick type EUB's are obviously the more portable option (From the point of view of their compact size / shape) If you want something with a shaped acoustic body (or even a solid DB-shaped body) then you're adding size / dimensions into the equation. There's an Azola Bugbass for sale on here, which is more compact than a Baby bass - but it's over your upper price limit. Again, the Eminence Upright has a small shaped body and really nice acoustic chamber (and sounds great) but again, it's out of your price range.... Stick basses can be a good option IMHO- they're compact & portable (often, but not always lightweight). Some can produce a more "natural" DB-like tone, but it's never quite the same as an acoustic DB. So I just wondered whether it was something a bit like the Azola, or an Eminence you were after? I've seen a BSX EUB for sale second-hand lately... but again, it's above your upper limit. I'm glad someone bought that Cetus EUB that was on here recently - that looked so cool! And I heard some nice stuff recorded on YouTube with one too. I recently sold my NS Design CR4, and I think one of the older NS WAV's might suit you - cracking basses. Good luck with your search, and don't forget to let us know how you get on - I'm intrigued as to what you go for now..... c'mon, c'mon man - make your mind up! lol EDIT: NS do an "Omni bass" which is smaller than 3/4 and looks good. Again, it will be pricey though....
  16. Sorry to hear that @Jakester Maybe you did talk yourself out of the gig. But take some positives from it. You got through the audition, and some of the band members thought you were pretty good. More importantly though, you learned the hard way that you need to make sure you concentrate on learning those tricky parts a bit more and definitely don't put yourself down after or during the session - there's plenty of other band members out there who are happy to do that Also, don't despair.... it might be that you end up getting called back again anyway, as in Old Horse's post above Or, as has happened to me - you might just meet that drummer or rhythm player, or other band member who you "clicked" with again, in some other band / project, and next time you get the gig. Take some positives from the experience, and build for the next one - and best of luck with it
  17. Looks like you're doing a good job with the refin @Maude I'm really enjoying this thread. And I still wish the young me had bought one of these when I first saw them around. It was probably the "Kay" badge that put me off..... or I needed the cash for Friday & Saturday night out! Looking forward to seeing how the staining goes. But don't make too good a job of it, or I'll have 80's Kay GAS
  18. Definitely, under absolutely no circumstances whatsoever, I absolutely promise! lol EDIT: Of course.... this doesn't stop me looking......
  19. I'm not looking at any new basses now, and I'm happy with my Ibanez SR505 - so I definitely don't want a 5 string But I just wanted to say @Al Krow - that's a decent, concise review of this bass. I quite like the design actually, and definitely like the colour / staining
  20. Great song. Looking forward to hearing the album. I like the original too. The Stranglers version does sound like a classic "old stranglers" song.
  21. Looks like a great bass. I have watched some of Jabba's builds, and they always look superb. Lucky you @Frank Blankto have acquired such a fine instrument. Happy NBD
  22. I've got a couple of acoustic gigs coming up, where space will be a real premium, and after last weekends gigs, I've every faith in the Elf 1x10 cab. Saturday, I did an outdoor gig in a large beer garden, with a 4 piece band, with Cajon / percussion, 3x vocals, guitar and keyboards (Cajon / percussion mic'ed into PA). I used the Elf, together with my Epifani 1x10, and it was more than enough. Really, really pleased with the sound too Sunday I did an acoustic duo, and the Elf cab alone was plenty. It sounded great at both gigs. As for weight / portability - it's my lightest weight cab ever. The built in handle and small dimensions means you're not arching your back over to one side, or bumping into people & chairs while you're carrying it too. I may even be tempted to get the head, as a backup, and as an alternative for my acoustic duos - it's so tiny it could fit into my pocket
  23. Last bump for this bass. It's just too good reduce asking price - I already priced it to sell. I'm tempted to put it in a case and just store it somewhere for now.... or until I get my fretless "mojo" back.
  24. I have just edited the thread to amend the date of this bass. It's actually an earlier model than I had recollected - 1987 / 88 and not early 90's as I had originally posted. I picked this bass up again last night - it's lovely to play and sounds beautiful. Again, it's lightweight for a Jazz at 3.8kg I'm taking this to band rehearsal tomorrow evening, and I've a feeling our lead singer / rhythm guitarist might try to convince me to keep it (I know he likes doing a few numbers with me on fretless, and was disappointed when I mentioned I was selling it). I sold another bass yesterday, so I might just convince myself to keep this lovely 80's Japan quality bass (I just need to play it more often). So anyone seriously interested - I'm tempted to withdraw by the weekend....
  25. I've said it too many times before, but my first bass was a Kay - it was one of their Rick copies, and it was absolutely awful. But when I first saw one of these, back in around 1980 / 81? - I could tell immediately that these basses were way way better quality than my old Kay. In fact, there were quite a few around for sale back then, and I often pondered getting one, but never did. Since my return to playing, I have occasionally thought about getting one of these. I always liked the look of them - the shape, the colours of the different wood types, the through neck construction, and brass hardware. It all looks rather lovely. Looks like you have a real bargain there - nice
