Fender Precision, sunburst/tort/rosewood, Jap
Marc S replied to Brother Jones's topic in Basses For Sale
I only just spotted your reason for selling this bass - and I'm so sorry to hear of your sad loss This bass looks an absolute stunner, and is my favourite colour / combination, with rosewood board and Tort plate I have to say, I've not played a bad Japan Fender yet. I also prefer Jazz necks, generally speaking. But each MIJ / CIJ Precision I've played seems to have a slightly shallower neck, and I've really liked the feel and playability of this. In fact, the extra width of the neck hasn't bothered me at all - it seems more comfortable somehow. If I didn't already have my JVP, in this colour combo - I'd be sorely tempted I may even keep my eye out for an MIJ P bass of this sort of age in white, and then sell something else Can't go wrong with a Japan Fender IMHO GLWTS -

I'm a fair way off, in South Wales. Bit of a trek along the M4 (or train journey) But if you're visiting the area to see some family / mates, or just up for a trip to the seaside or mountains - you are very welcome to come and try my NS Design EUB. I play a few gigs where I double up on bass guitar and upright. EUB can be a godsend for some gigs. As an alternative to not playing upright at all - for me it's a no-brainer.... Get yourself an EUB. Now, getting the right one for you... That's the trick. Good luck with your search. My NS Design packs down so that it's not too much bigger than a bass guitar. It's not terribly heavy either.

I had mentioned Squiers earlier - as Stub Mandrel says, there are some crackers out there, and for not much money second-hand TheGreek also mentions Sires - another example of a great second-hand buy. For me, though I've heard great things about Harley Benton's - I think the weight would be an issue Don't forget about the "Vintage" brand either. I played a fairly decent, cheap Jazz Vintage a while back - though again, it was a tad heavy You may not be intending to play any gigs at the moment - but that may change fairly quickly, if you gel well, and someone starts wanting the buzz of playing a few live events....

Hi Dennis, I had a really long break from bass (25 years!) But so glad to be back again. Perhaps your case is a lesson to us all - to keep just one bass, just in case you get tempted back into playing again However, on the plus side, you can start your journey again, and with a clean slate First obvious question is that of budget, then the question of what it's all for? i.e. - what are you going to end up doing? gigs? recording? etc Because that will dictate the rig you will need. There's plenty of choice in the marketplace here on BC, both for basses and amps / rigs. And of course, plenty of people who are willing to share their thoughts, opinions & experiences of any equipment. Harley Benton basses seem to get good reviews as an excellent starter or backup instrument, or even a good gigging bass for those who don't want to take expensive basses to "dodgy" venues Keep an eye on the marketplace for a 2nd hand HB - that may save you even more dosh. Perhaps even consider a 2nd hand Squier from this forum? EDIT: There's always plenty of second-hand bargains to be had in the marketplace let us know what you opt for, and good luck with your search Oh.... and welcome back to Bass

SOLD, please close. MIJ Fender Jazz "Photoflame" finish (1994/5) + case
Marc S replied to Marc S's topic in Basses For Sale
That's what I thought, thanks stewblack. Actually, I did think of advertising it for £500 - then reducing to my asking price of £425 (which IMO, is a steal anyway) That may have worked as a better tactic lol I can't believe someone hasn't snapped this up. It's too good to reduce any further - especially with a case thrown in I might just do my upcoming gig with this (on Saturday) and see if I can convince myself to hang on to it lol -
Happy birthday indeed. I was playing an open mic sometime back, in the 147 club in Cardiff Our singer guitarist was chatting to this guy, who had been sat watching us "Well played guys" he said..... Turns out it was the man himself I must admit, I wouldn't have recognised him, as I hadn't met him before, or seen a recent photo of him. But he struck me as a really decent sort of bloke, great player too

It seems to vary in each band that I've been in. Some bands take it in turns to share driving (and fuel, the planet etc). And some band members don't drive - so they pay a consideration to the driver..... Usually half the petrol, but of course, you also have to consider whether the driver is picking you up, taxi'ing you home, helping you unload gear etc So around half the petrol costs, but a pint or two for the taxi'ing and help etc.... I would do what you can to keep the driver(s) happy. I was recently in a band, where the drummer didn't drive, wouldn't help out with costs (always pleading poverty) and never bought anyone a drink.... but was quite happy to accept a drink!!! This ended in him also expecting me to give him a lift elsewhere, and to one gig where he was playing with another band! So I'm more cautious these days....

Marc S replied to Marc S's topic in Basses For Sale
I wouldn't want a scorched finish myself - but each to their own, of course. As I mentioned, I did think about stripping it back and doing a refin - but don't have the appetite for that now. I'm too lazy tbh But this could be a nice refin project for someone.... or just leave it be, as it's a rather nice colour -
For sale is my stunning red / orange burst Yamaha TRB 5 string bass. It's not one of the Japan built models, (Korea, I think?) It really is a lovely player, great quality and has a superb Glockenklang 3 band pre-amp fitted. The price reflects the lovely condition & upgraded Pre-amp, and is actually slightly less than I paid for it, but needs must...... The pre-amp sounds absolutely immense (check them out online!) and would set you back £130 & P+P, plus fitting. It was pro fitted by Dave Dearnaley, for the previous owner (who is also a BC member) I need to downsize my collection, I'm not playing 5 string much these days, so reluctantly this has to go. It sounds absolutely superb (if a little modern for my tastes) and has a great range of tones and sounds. It's X-long scale (35") and the B string is wonderfully fat sounding. It's in great condition, though there are a few minor surface marks here & there - no chips, cracks or splits in the surface though. It weighs 4.5 Kg - so certainly no boat anchor. No trades please, unless you have a 5 string Wingbass. I'd rather not post (and I'd much prefer you tried it and were happy) I'm prepared to meet somewhere though, and have a battery amp and amp-headphones so you can hear the bass. I can let you have a nice, well-padded gigbag to take it away in.

I've not seen one of these in a 5 string version. I played a 4 string in a shop, a little while back, and was quite impressed...... Just wondering @TAzMilitello - what's the B string like? I know some 5 strings seem to suffer with a bit of a "wooly" B string Does this bass combat that, with a higher tension B string? Hmmm, interested -as my 5er is starting to feel a bit heavy for my ageing shoulders....

Wow! Why has this not sold? Matsumoko, Japan 80's top quality bass..... for silly money If I needed a P bass, I'd have this in a flash. I used to own a Thunder Jet, back when they came out new Chap who bought it from me still has that very bass, and it's his favourite he's ever owned..... (and he's owned and sold quite a few since) Me? I already have too many and need to shift a couple...... Or, like I say, I'd have this in a flash Have a bump for a superb bass, that's worth easily twice what Shambo is asking for it, in terms of quality, construction and bang for your buck GLWTS mate EDIT: And that case just might have well have the words "Serious MOJO" written on it, in huge letters

Thanks for that info. I'd heard the term "photo flame" before, but it was referring to one that was red / orange - so I stupidly thought it referred to the colour. Lol. Anyhow, interesting to hear that others have experienced similar cracking. I'm a huge fan of Japan Fenders. I've got a similar 62RI Jazz, different finish / colour, which is fretless - and it's such a lovely bass. In all honesty, if I hadn't got myself the Roadworn Jazz, I'd be keeping this bass. But I don't play it - the RW is the one that gets played every time.... I like them both, probably as much as each other. If it wasn't for looming redundancy - I'd probably still be trying to justify keeping them both Cheers for all your helpful comments -
For sale is this MIJ Fender Jazz, in an unusual colour and finish. EDIT: I have been told (see thread below) that this finish is called "Photoflame" Serial number dates it as 1994 or 95 and the build quality / component quality is what you'd expect from a Japan made instrument from the 80's & 90's In the interests of complete honesty - the condition of the finish is not great. Lovely colour though it is, there's some unusual damage to the Poly surface. The previous owner said it had been like that when he picked it up, and the guy before him didn't know how it had happened either. So if you're looking for a mint, pristine bass - this is not for you! I've tried to capture how the scratches look - but it's quite hard to show, as there are lots of other reflections of background objects etc. Both front & back of the body have quite a few "scratches" on the surface - or my own thoughts were that this bass may well have been in the cargo hold of an aeroplane, as to my eye - it could be that the surface has shrunk & cracked. There is also an area on the back which had fairly extensive "buckle rash" - and I covered this with model makers paint. I must have been thinking about trying to protect the bare wood underneath.... I acquired this bass, simply because I have a real liking for Japan Fenders and as soon as I picked it up, It just felt lovely to play. The neck is wonderful and just feels great - Oddly enough, it has a few minor dings but not the same extent of damage as the body, and nothing that affects playability in any way. I acquired it at a time when I lacked a fretted Jazz, and had GAS for one. Since I got this bass, I've more recently acquired a favourite Roadworn Jazz and I've decided that's my keeper. I initially had thoughts of sanding this bass down and refinishing it, or getting a replacement body, but after a while, the scratches bothered me less. Since being made aware that I'm going to be made redundant in the near future - I have decided to just keep my Roadworn, and don't have the appetite for doing a complete refin now anyway. It really is a lovely player, and if you're not bothered about the scratches & dings, or you fancy a refin project - then this is an inexpensive MIJ Fender. I can let you have a choice of case with it; either a Fender Red Badge Shaped Hard case (which is a bit tatty) or an old Brown Tolex covered Fender G&L fur-lined Hard case, which is a bit "Roadworn", alternatively, I've got a padded Fender Gigbag, if you prefer. Including a case, I hope this is a fair price? The bass is located just to the North of Cardiff. Note: I will not ship this bass, as I'd much rather that you tried it and are happy with the condition, and know exactly what you're buying. I'm happy to travel a little way to meet half way (I've got a Roland Battery amp so you can hear it). Absolutely no trades at all, unless you have a 5 string Wingbass (with cash your way). I can't own any more basses, as I'll be jobless in the near future.

PRICE DROP NOW £450 - 1986 Japanese Contemporary P-Bass
Marc S replied to BigJim's topic in Basses For Sale
Managed to have a quick shifty of this bass yesterday evening (Jim was gigging in Cardiff, and popped up for a cuppa) I can confirm, this bass is a lovely example of an early era, high quality Fender Japan instrument. It's in great condition for its' age, and has the usual stunning feeling MIJ / CIJ Fender neck - lovely rolled edges and quality feel to it Plus, Big Jim is a great guy to deal with - so buy in confidence folks PS. Jim, you're welcome to swing by for another cuppa, when you're gigging around here again matey! -

Absolutely. You have to be able to have, and to express your opinion. But of course, there's no simple, hard & fast answer to this - because it depends on how you express your opinions, and of course, how the listeners interpret what you are saying. Absolutely bang on re Bob's point about doing this via email or text though. Such things are fine for checking whether members are free for a gig, or to check Saturdays venue arrangements etc - but expressing opinions via such methods, and you risk misinterpretation, or timbre of mood etc. It's a funny thing, but as I've got older, volume wars seem to have become a bit less of an issue. Perhaps younger musicians just want to be heard more? Or perhaps older musicians realise the importance of dynamics more? Or more likely, all of our hearing is suffering more, and we can't hear above certain levels? Of course, there are still exceptions - I do still play with one or two who like to crank up their volume, gradually - each of them is a lead guitarist, oddly enough As a newer member or auditioning for a band, you are also something of an "outsider" - so your ability to come in and immediately start making changes is also a tricky one. Someone above posted that maybe they'd have waited another rehearsal or two before stating your points. Perhaps this is a better way forward, as you get to know how to handle the individual characters a bit better? Ultimately, if you like the bands' choice of songs and their abilities - then you like something about them, so give them a bit of time to get to know you, and you to know them, and then approach the volume & speed issues..... If that falls on deaf ears - perhaps then tell them you don't wish to continue, and calmly give them your reasons - tell them you like them as individuals, you like the repertoire - but don't want to be playing too loud / fast No, I don't think you're opinionated, but you obviously like to get your thoughts and opinions in early. That's no bad thing, but perhaps give new tryout bands a rehearsal or two before quitting - drop some subtle, and maybe humourous "hints" along the way. But don't put up with the issues for too long - or you just end up wasting too much time, and feeling frustrated Or buy yourself an incredibly loud bass amp, of course!
