  1. Well, that looks a bit different I like the look of the finger anchor(s) too GLWTS, from just over the hill from you!
  2. That's a cracking colour, and a very cool look I can vouch for the quality of Limelight basses - they're great I'm also not sure what components Mark uses when building his Limelights - but the pickups sound superb Lovely bass GLWTS
  3. Phew! Great news dustandbarley - really pleased for you sir The whole affair does make me rather nervy about posting items though.....
  4. Hi Gary / Crusoe, Welcome to BC, and welcome back to playing, after a long break. I too returned to bass, after an absence of around 25 years bigsmokebass asks the question of whether you now have more passion - well after my long break, I can say I definitely have Not played a Squier Silver Series - but I've heard great comments from people who've owned or played them I've got 3 basses from the Fender Japan factory (2x Squiers and a Fender) and they're great basses - So I think you've got a great bass to re-start your bass career Join in with the chats on this forum, but Most of all.... have fun
  5. Thanks for sharing that info toneknob - It's a great story I don't know where seven years has gone!
  6. Thinking back - I seem to recall seeing a magazine article (or was it on the internet?) featuring Norman Where he sold his Jazz bass, and from memory, he didn't get much money for it, given its' history Although again, I think I also read that he did most of his recording work with his Precision - the Jazz being used mainly for live work....
  7. Wow. Wish I had Norman's Jazz - I'm dead jealous! I never saw Norm with the Blockheads. But I did see him with Wilko and Dylan Howe (on drums) a few years back. I've got to say, they blew me away. A 3 piece band with such a full sound, and boy, did they rock Norman's playing was superb. Wish I owned his Jazz... or his "rhythm stick" P/J Wish I was half as good as him
  8. Hi Richard, Hope you are well good sir? When you say "It's not happening with the Markbass rig" - I too am wondering what you mean exactly - and just what the rig is? When I first started playing upright, I had a MB rig. A CMD210 and a 1x15 cab. Both my EUB and acoustic DB at the time, sounded OK with the CMD But as soon as I added the 1x15, or even played through a separate head, just using the 15" - I never liked the sound. No matter what I did (including trying several different heads) the 15" just produced a muddy sound, with very indistinct tones, especially on the lower notes. I had been perfectly happy with the 15" added to the rig when playing bass guitar. I really liked the sound.... but was never happy when playing upright through it. I've heard several theories as to why 15's aren't great for upright - I won't go into too much depth here, as it's covered elsewhere, and in any case - I'm not sure just how true those theories are...... or whether it's a culmination of lots of factors. Suffice to say, that I never liked the sound, via a speaker I previously liked for bass guitar. I've heard several upright players saying the same thing. I now have a MB210 Traveller cab as part of a flexible rig (several cabs, couple of heads -for different bands / different size venues etc). I must say, I quite like the sound of the 210 with my EUB. Even better, when playing smaller gigs & acoustic jams, I have an Epifani UL110, and I love the sound of that. It's great with both BG and upright..... but not on its' own for larger gigs (it just isn't big enough) I also sometimes use a MB 12" cab, and that's great with BG, but not quite so nice with either EUB or acoustic DB. So the theory that upright is better through smaller speakers seems to ring true. I used to own a PJB 4x5 cab, and that was a great cab for upright. I've heard some great sounds by people using other PJ equipment - all with small speakers So if there's a 15" or even some 12"'s in your rig - try borrowing some 10"'s
  9. @Mr Bassman I just wanted to add - I only discovered the TC BodyRez because of one of your posts on another thread.... I found one on here, second-hand, and went for it on your recommendation. I must say, I do quite like the sound it produces with my EUB It's still not exactly "acoustic sounding" but the resonance (particularly at the lower end) seems to have more "body" As of yet, I've only done rehearsals with it - but our drummer thought it sounded great. I also use an MXR EQ pedal, and tweak the EQ using that - depending on the venue. Of course, the sound I hear whilst stood relatively close to the amp, is quite different from what the audience will hear. As NickA points out - the amplified sound of an acoustic upright is quite different to its' acoustic sound too I'm interested to hear what other players are using
  10. Just pointing out - other search engines are available Jack Re the 3 string dilemma - it just occurred to me, I wonder if someone back-dated this bass from a 4 string to a 3 some time ago? Seems an odd thing to do, but you never know..... as people sometimes do the oddest things What details are there, that point this bass out to once have been a 3 stringer BTW? PS. It was actually reading the Who quote legend below Happy Jack's Name - "I look pretty young" that made me think about the back-dating possibility.... So if my suggestion sounds at all daft..... blame HJ
  11. That's a great price for one of these IMO A stagg is just what got me into the world of upright I paid about £250 for mine (a few years back) and I got £250 for it when I sold it So to anyone pondering whether to give upright a try £175 is a great price GLWTS
  12. Ah, shame you won't separate. Shamefully, I have not yet tried half-rounds, and this looked a good opportunity without paying out too much for something I'm unsure of What did you think of them hooky_lowdown? I assume you didn't like them, considering they only had an hours use.... Either way, this seems a good price for a nice job-lot GLWTS
  13. Ah, I'm so sorry to hear of your redundancy Nothingman. I'm shortly to be facing the same myself I'm really surprised to see this bass is still here - it's a nice looking instrument, nice colour too - and to anyone wondering about adding a P/J to their fold.... this is a great intro at a silly price I forgot to say earlier, that my Squier VM was also a P/J and it's what convinced me to go down that route. In fact, the pickups were fairly decent, from memory I couldn't find out about jrixn1's point above, re it being a "Precision Bass Special". When I got mine, I was told by the shop that it was a Vintage Modified Series, and this one looks identical.... apart from the colour Either way, this is a steal for somebody. I bought mine as a backup - but ended up gigging it quite a bit, as my then "main bass" It certainly ranked as good as some, and better than some MIM's I had tried at that time Again GLWTS But moreover, good luck with your imminent job search Have a bump on me
  14. Pah. Everything else seems to be governed by an Ombudsman, or be regulated in some form I wonder if this is true? Of course, it may be the case - so I wonder what other recourse you have? Again, best of luck in resolving this matter, and let us know what happens
  15. Have you got a couple of photos of it from a distance Owen? Preferably showing the whole bass in one view? No idea what it might be worth - but a nice over-view might help give someone an idea....
  16. I've known people who've owned some of the earlier China made Affinity's (including my son) where the guitars / basses themselves weren't bad, but where tuners were a bit "rough", pickups not great, and just general stuff like wiring being single stranded / core wire, which breaks as soon as you take the scratchplate off, and under the least movement A couple of lads who regularly experienced interference from Taxi radios etc. But of course, if you get one of these 2nd hand, and you like the body and neck and playability etc - you can replace electrics & tuners I have seen some of the earlier China Affnity's going quite cheap on Facebook groups / Gumtree etc - so you pays your money, you takes your choice Just wanted to reiterate my earlier point about the Classic Vibe range though - there are times when I wish I'd kept my Fiesta Red CV Precision And every now & then, I still lust after the CV 70's P bass, with maple board & black clocks.....mmmm The CV Precisions are absolutely superb (I did play a CV Jazz and it was nice, but not quite as nice IMO). In fact I had a nice US Precision at the same time as my CV And there really wasn't much in it, quality-wise. The US tuners were a bit nicer (the CV ones were fine though) the US P was a bit lighter (but the CV wasn't too heavy) In terms of the sound, they were pretty close - but the CV might have slightly had the edge, in terms of definition of low end....
  17. I think Shambo is spot on here, Even among the best Squiers, there are variations. Re your original point - don't forget that a Squier made in China can also be made in 3 different factories (I think it's 3... might even be 4) The Squier Classic Vibes and Matt Freeman sigs are made in a different factory to the Affinity range, and those CV's are absolutely superb Also, The newer China made Affinity range are also a tad better (more consistent?) than the older Affinity range I've got two Japan Squiers (A JV and an A series), and there aren't many US Fenders that are better... but of course, that's my opinion
  18. This is why I'd hate to send a bass via couriers I know this is a pedal - which isn't as valuable as a bass or guitar, but still annoying. And in any case - if it's got the recipients address on it.... surely someone should pass it on to someone in a position to deliver it? Hope this all works out OK mate
  19. Just adding a friendly bump for CalDeep - he's a pleasure to deal with GLWTS mate It's a cracking looking bass!
  20. Just wanted to say, I've got one of these, and it's an amazing little amp More powerful than you'd expect for such a tiny little thing. Great tonal control options & some nice effects I've used mine at pub jams, with several acoustic guitarists (some with their own battery powered amps) and this little amp has more than coped I've even played said pub jams with a drummer (albeit a quiet drummer, with reduced kit). Also great for keeping under the coffee table or alongside the sofa, without being cause of domestic "problems" EDIT: Built in tuner and drum machine too! great for practice GLWTS
  21. I keep coming back to this thread, to click on the link and look at the UB 804... It's all your fault Mr Bassman! I don't need one of these - I'm perfectly happy with my NS I don't need one of these, I don't need one of these, I don......
  22. Good times indeed. When I think back to some of the awful, cheap basses and amps that were around, and affordable back when I was first playing.... eugh! makes me shudder - especially that Kay Rick copy I had Re the difference between basses - I've had some absolutely wonderful (for the money) Squiers - but I guess I've kept my more expensive Fenders, because they just have the edge when it comes to the sound I want - but also because they have been just that little bit more comfortable to play. Some of them perhaps being two or three times the price, and maybe not 2 or 3 times as comfortable, granted Re the amp - yes TE gear was superbly built, great sounding gear back in the day, and still sounds great now. But for me, I've spent my dosh on getting as light weight amp heads and cabs as I can. As you age, it becomes ever more important. Especially as I still don't have a roadie! I just can't see myself lugging the sort of gear I used to own in the 80's around again, especially for those gigs where you're parked half a mile away (we all get one or two of those once in a while)
