Thanks for posting that link MoonBassAlpha How would they handle a bass being plugged directly into them, via say an MP3 player? Can they handle the signal / frequencies OK? I'm assuming so Cheers

For Sale Only. Fender Short Scale Jazz Bass. NEAR MINT I bought this from this very forum a while back - but it's not getting used, as I find the shift between 34" scale, DB and 30" scale a bit tricky Despite there still being an ad somewhere on the net - these are no longer available, they haven't been available for some time, and are not often seen (particularly here in the UK) Made in China, in the same factory as the Classic Vibe and Matt Freeman basses, this bass is a great quality build, and a lovely player, with a great sound from its' P/J pickups It's in absolutely great condition (there's a tiny teeny scratch on it - I forget where, but you can hardly see it). The finish is actually metallic red, but that's hard to photograph - It's got a nice sparkle to it You could hang this bass up in a shop - it looks brand new. I have rarely played it since buying it Collection only please (South Wales) or I could meet somewhere to hand it over (I've got headphones + battery amp for you to test it) You rarely see these basses - so please don't start posting copies of the on-line adverts - they are NOT in stock, and haven't been for several years (the last import quota was never even met, apparently) Comes with a Ritter Junior gigbag, which fits it nicely No trades please - I'm trying to thin the herd I'm only asking what I paid for it, and have seen these advertised for as much as 600 on eBay, or the same money, in not such great condition

Yes, most Flats are more taut than the majority of rounds - However, some flats are lower tension. It's largely a case of trying a few out.... Thomastik Infeldt (T.I.) Flats are low tension though - probably the lowest tension flats, and lower tension than most rounds. The low priced Adagio Flats I've mentioned on here, which have also been discussed by several others, are not overly high tension either. Definitely worth a try at about £12 - £13 a set La Bella Low tension flats are pretty good strings too, though they are higher tension than the TI's and slightly higher than the Adagios

I wasn't sure either - but I put a set of the Adagio's on a Jazz, and was really pleased with the sound. At £13 for a set, I'd say definitely give it a try. You may just be amazed

Funny enough - it was Norman's Rhythm Stick that made me get this converted. I always liked the look of it I got myself a Limelight P/J, and if I hadn't got that, I'd be keeping this one. I really can't justify having both... GAS, damned GAS Re the Jazz - I had a Roadworn Jazz, and in a futile attempt to thin the herd, I traded the RW Jazz.... and I have regretted letting it go it ever since. I suppose sometimes you really just don't appreciate what you have till it's gone, or you learn a lesson by going full circle? The only other thought I have, is to sell the Limelight.... but I love that bass too Re Dave Dearnaley - I've seen several of his custom built guitars, and they have all been absolutely amazing Yes, his hand-built guitars are beautiful. Chequered binding, lovely pearl inlays, beautifully grained woods, top quality construction Top craftsmanship, from a guy who really knows his stuff.

Sorry to hear of those who've had bad experiences with PMT. I have to say, I've had nothing but good experiences with PMT's Cardiff branch. The staff are always friendly and helpful Though I did try a couple of basses a short while ago, and two of them clearly hadn't been set up very well The guy I was dealing with said that in the one case, it had only just recently come in (2nd hand) and that both would be set up better very soon I found that a little odd. Of course, different players like different set ups (perhaps this is more variable on bass?) Any other basses, or other instruments I've tried at PMT have always been pretty well set up, in the past. My first purchase from the Cardiff shop. was on their opening day. I bought an amp head (TC Electronic) It was still in its' box, somewhere in the shop They went out of their way to find it, despite many deliveries on that day, and boxes and customers everywhere.... They made sure I tested it well, and even gave me a choice of cabs to try it with (again, despite one of those being still boxed) After that, they even gave me a good discount, and a couple of the staff even remember my name. I notice that they also call other customers by their names too - I don't think anyone else has remembered the names of customers in any of the music shops I've previously shopped in. They continue to be helpful, without being pushy or "in your face" so I pop in from time to time, even if I'm not shopping for anything in particular

That's a cracking looking Jazz Mr Bassfan I particularly like the block inlays on the neck I've actually got a set of the stick-on ones, which I was also thinking of using on this white Jazz of mine I've used the stick on block "inlays" before, and they're not bad you know Of course, you can't beat the real thing, and with the bound edges too..... mmmm -

As neilp says above, I wouldn't use alcohol swabs on gut strings - it would dry them out... I'm interested to hear what others think is best from the products above, or something else they use? I did have a bottle of cleaner a violin specialist shop sold me, which was for cleaning Rosin - not that I bow much at all That seemed pretty good, but I have now lost the bottle and can't even recall what it was called...

I gigged this bass on Saturday night, and it sounded amazing. The drummer and singer/ guitarist had both said it sounded sweet... I'm now considering whether or not I should really sell this beauty - I'm tempted to withdraw, as it sounds great and is so comfortable to play, and so lightweight... Hmm, what to do?

Killing Joke's bass player "youth" aka Martin Glover, briefly formed a band called "Brilliant". They appeared on TOTP with 2 bass players back in 1982, I think Also, I have seen a couple of bands with both a DB player and bass guitar (not often, and I can't recall who - but I have seen it)

In my quest to reduce the number of basses I have, and to get my hands on my ultimate Jazz - I have very reluctantly decided to sell this fantastic Roadworn Precision. Friends will think I'm feeling unwell - it's a wrench - but needs must. As you can see, this bass has been converted to a P/J (done by pro luthier Dave Dearnaley of Cardiff). The bridge pickup is a superb Entwistle JBXN, and the neck pickup is from Mark Morgan-Richards - it's what he puts in his superb Limelight Precision basses, and it sounds fab. The electrics are also a kiogon loom - and was a cynch to fit, and as ever from kiogon, all components are of the highest quality Also, this bass had the neck slightly slimmed down by previous owner DaveyboyRooster's luthier. If you prefer the chunkier P bass necks, then this is probably not for you. It feels much more like a Jazz, but ever so slightly wider. It's the most comfortable P bass neck I ever played, with lovely silky smooth finish, and the depth, radius and width are very comfortable for me. I tend not to like necks that are wide and deep. I need to thin the herd, and a bass has come up that I really want. I really really want Also, I have a rather nice Limelight P/J and can't justify 2 P/J's - it's either this one or the Limelight, and I couldn't decide.... In the end, I opted to keep the Limelight, but there's not much in it, especially since I installed the Limelight pickup in this one. It's incredibly lightweight (around 3.6kg I think - I'll double check later) but it's the lightest 34" scale P bass I've ever picked up. Strung with Thomastik Flat wound strings, which are very low tension. I could put some rounds on it, if you prefer, but it's currently set up very well with low action and plays like a dream. Collection from near Cardiff - or I could meet up somewhere, and have a battery amp and headphones for testing. I'd prefer not to deliver, and want to make sure you're 100% happy anyway (why wouldn't you be? lol) Comes with a well padded gigbag, or for the right offer, you can have a really nice roadworn Fender (G&G) hard case. No trades please - I'm thinning the herd)

Price Drop: Now £400 In my eternal quest for the "perfect jazz", I'm selling this rather lovely (quite new) MIM Jazz bass, in near mint condition. I'm selling to make room & funds my next purchase... (aren't we all? lol) It looks a real beauty, in stunning condition (one teeny tiny ding I can see - but can't get my phone to focus on). I think this one is a very recent model (MX1793063636 serial number) and has a Pau Ferro fretboard, which I like the look of. The last owner never gigged it, and didn't seem to play it much as far as I can see. The strings still sound brand new. Weight is around 4.3kg (I'll get an accurate weight soon) Normally, I'm not fussed on white scratchplates - so I bought a Tort one which was listed as being suitable to fit a MIM Jazz - all the screw holes seem to line up perfectly. On this bass, I think the white scratchplate looks rather nice, and quite classy - so I decided to leave it there. You can have the tort one if you prefer - I'll even chuck both in, so you can dither and ponder about swapping them yourself I'm now throwing in a choice of either a Fender Red badge shaped hard case, or an old Roadworn brown G&G Fender bass case (I believe this was from an AVRI) No trades please. Collection from near Cardiff. Or we could possibly arrange to meet up - I hate posting basses, and would much prefer you tried it. I've got a vox battery headphone amp, and a Roland Micro bass amp to test without mains, if we meet at motorway services EDIT: Tea provided at my place, when you come to test drive.

Yes, it's all about managing your time, and of course, letting other members know, from the outset, that you have other commitments As I said earlier, one minute I was in 3 bands.... next I was in none. Oddly enough, each time I was in just one band, as were the other members - there seemed to be more "phoning in sick" type stuff going on. Same re your second point - I've had the same thing. Being in 2 or 3 bands, but others who are only in one, and with few other commitments, being mysteriously unavailable all too often In one band, where the other 4 of us worked full time, had families and other band projects / commitments. All of us agree to learn 2 songs for next week, and the keyboard player who has no full time job, no kids.... and he says he hadn't had time to learn the songs, as it's simply just too much work! Add to that, he was the only one of us who could actually read music, and couldn't even be bothered to google that! None of the bands I'm in are playing all the time - they each get busy & quiet periods, and I always work on a first-come-first-served basis, even if the 2nd offer is a higher fee.... It just needs to be an honest and upfront approach, by all involved. In fact, thinking about it, none of my mates bands are so busy with gigs that they couldn't do another project if they wanted (a sign of the times re our local venues, maybe?) But also, just about every musician I know is in more than one band. Those who aren't, tend to be the people doing original stuff only, or originals with just a few covers. Perhaps they're too busy writing songs?

In one of the bands, the lead guitarist was, shall we say, a bit too familiar with the singer... until their spouses found out..... That was certainly no fault of mine! lol

I'm in 2 pub covers bands, one tribute, and an original folk / Americana duo at the moment. 4 bands, while still working, and maintain a family life is pretty damn hard to do.... But I enjoy playing covers and originals, and really enjoy playing different styles. I must say, I never really get chance to get bored, doing things this way - there's just no chance to get bored! Actually, some years back, I was in 3 bands on the Monday, but by the Thursday, I was in none! All through no fault of mine so I find I "need" at least a couple of projects, just in case one (or more) fold. For a while, I was playing regularly for a few people at a local folk club, and doing regular slots at open mic nights. I found I could dip in & out of those sort of nights. It all depends what you want to do next - but try a few different bands / projects, that's my advice
