  1. Can I come for a fortnight.... around mid-summer? lol
  2. Hi, I know these are a set of strings designed for Pizz playing - but does anyone know if these are good for bowing?
  3. Although I have several instruments around the house - I never really get time to spend playing anything much, other than bass and DB I do like the sound of the mandolin though, and always fancied playing one.... I have one, and spent quite a bit of time on it, and got so far.... however, I found the same as Barking Spiders - tiny strings and tiny distances between frets My podgy fingers just wouldn't allow me to play even some of the basic chords Then I discovered Bouzouki - it can be tuned the same way as a Mandolin (though on Bouzouki, D & G string "pairs" are 2 octaves) and there's much more space for my awkward, bass players fingers.... I just need more time to spend on it though! lol If you like Mandolin Barking Spiders - either give Mandola or Bouzouki a try....
  4. Like others have noted - Mocha is not among my favourite of colours However, this bass is the exception! It's a really nice colour / tint and the combo of Maple board and blocks / binding makes this bass stand out! I don't "need" this bass at all - but I keep coming back to look at it, because it just seems to stand out Limelight basses are absolutely brilliant, and the hand wound pickups Mark installs are sublime If I lived closer, I'd be wanting to give this a whirl - but it's probably a good thing that I'm far enough away to resist the temptation If I had space for a Jazz.... I'd be seriously wanting this bass GLWTS Pawel
  5. That really is a lovely refinish! Awesome bass. GLWTS
  6. Sorry to be late to the party - I only just saw this thread. I was going to mention Nick Cave & Kylie It's something that you might take almost for granted now - as it has been years.... But back then (1996) it seemed such a bizarre collaboration.... I remember being shocked! lol Didn't a couple of the Sex Pistols (Cook & Jones) also work with Phil Lynott?
  7. There are 3 female bass players I can think of instantly, on this forum I know of a few locally to me too. But you're quite right, there probably are fewer females playing bass Then again, there are also fewer guitarists and drummers too - and probably musicians in general, sadly.... If you are looking for a female bass player for a specific project - you may wish to put your location on your profile.... Also, you could place an advert in the musicians wanted section....
  8. The Vintage Modified series are really good for the money I had a P/J Precision some time back, and the pickups in that were pretty good I also had a Fretless VM Jazz, and that was a seriously nice bass for the money, and my route into fretless (not that I now play fretless that much lol) Pickups in that also seemed really good - I certainly had no complaints about them anyhow
  9. Thanks for your thoughts Mr Bassman, This looks like a really great cab! So portable & neat, and a real, practical solution for those of us who need to lug DB's around When / if you play Bass guitar through it, along with a drummer and several other instruments - please share your thoughts & experiences again I've now got GAS for something I didn't even know existed until recently! lol
  10. Hi Nick, I'm sorry to hear you had such an awful time - I hadn't realised mate. You looked so well when we met up a few years back Really pleased to hear you are now in the clear, and that the op was successful. Also, I'm pleased that you decided that a new bass was the best possible treat for yourself Nice bass it is too - and I note that LewisK beat me to it with his question I think I must play it each time I pick my fretless up! lol
  11. I have played heavy MIM's - and light ones too (the RW I mentioned earlier is the lightest full scale P I've played) My MIJ Jazz is quite light- certainly lighter than either of the US Jazzes I owned (and marginally lighter than the RW Jazz I once owned)
  12. I don't own a Mex P Special, but I have played one, and it was rather nice, if my memory serves me. I do own a P/J'ed Roadworn Precision - the Roadworn basses are MIM and I don't care where they're made.... they are fabulous! Having owned several US Fenders and 2x MIM Roadworns, I can say the RW's are as good as, and sometimes better than their US counterparts So I wouldn't be concerned about whether it's MIM or US The main thing to consider is - do you like the bass? Does it sound good, and is it comfortable to play? Aside from that, the "made in" badge / sticker is irrelevant... I've played some not-so-good MIM's but I've also played some good ones and some great ones - Same thing re US made versions If you like it, give it another whirl. But play something else just before you buy too - if there's anything similar in the shop, give that a try too If you like the bass go for it, and have a great NBD EDIT: I'm a big fan of the P/J pickup arrangement too - it does everything I want, and is really flexible and simple / quick to change
  13. I've got a BG250-208 got it from someone on here actually. It already has upgraded speakers, so it's already 250W at 4 ohms It's definitely louder and meatier than its' original state (I know, cos I had one when the first came out) but it would still struggle with a loud drummer and 2 guitarists I use mine for jams, pub sessions, and acoustic nights etc. I've played alongside guitar, keys & drums - but the drummer was fairly quiet I've also used it in small - medium sized pub gigs, where I know the rest of the band aren't overly loud. I've also used it where I've been plugged into the PA, and the 208 is really just my stage monitor. It's a nice little amp, really compact & neat, and I like the sound (I've got some nice results with my EUB) but I wouldn't expect much from it up against loud drummers and more than one guitarist - even with the upgraded speakers.
  14. My question too This little cab looks amazing! I'm just wondering how it projects the sound? Looks as though it shouldn't work too well, with the speaker on its' back but I'm sure Acoustic Image know what they're doing Also Mr Bassman - what does it sound like with a bass guitar, whilst playing with a drummer?
  15. I have a Markbass 2x10 traveller - it's 8 ohm though (not seen / tried a 4 ohm version) and I really like it a lot. It's quite loud, and is deceptively lightweight. It's lighter than some cabs that are physically smaller! My rig is flexible, in that I've got a few cabs, and I choose which to use, depending on which band / set-up I'm playing with, and the size of the venue One of my fave cabs is my Epifani UL1x10. Absolutely amazing cab for its' size. I've not tried their 12's but I'd imagine they're really good
  16. Personally, I have tried 15" speakers with DB and I couldn't get on with them But of course, we all have our own tastes / methods / sound we want to achieve If this is an amp designed for acoustic instruments - then maybe in this instance, the 15" speaker will work well with DB? I don't think it's easy to say the above - in general terms Jezyorkshire - I would agree, but this might be the exception....
  17. Yes, if it's an amp designed for use with DB - this is probably the right section for it Never seen one of these - just wish I was a bit closer, so I could pop along & try it But Cardiff - Bolton to try an amp is a bit far lol Anyhow, GLWTS Just realised, it's been for sale a while. I can tell you're not in a huge rush
  18. Couldn't agree more with FinnDave here. However, I also agree with Wateroftyne! - perhaps it will just take time to "bond" with the sound Maybe if you've got one you like playing, you just need to take it along to more rehearsals and gigs - hear it more in a live band setting.... For me, I was off Fenders and P basses for years. I wouldn't touch one. I had played some bad ones and some mediocre ones, and some pretty good one (though I was probably a bit reluctant to admit it at the time) and it seems to me that you need to play as many as you can - just for the hell of it - But when you find one you really like - you will want to take it home with you. Well, that's what happened to me anyway
  19. This is the reason I nearly bought one of these.....
  20. It's a shame the Vox Amplug seems to be so bad. I almost bought one.... phew I did opt for a pair of Vox bass Amphones, and I must say, I quite like them You need to tweak your EQ a bit, as they can be overly midrangey (is that a word? lol) And being critical of them, they've made the jack lead a bit on the short side. Said lead is also a bit thin and wimpy and could've done with better shielding too which is annoying, given they aren't a cheap alternative! That said, I use mine a lot, and find them simple to use and nice & portable - in case we're staying away anywhere i.e. no need to pack some headphones and a pedal unit.
  21. I'm surprised this hasn't gone already.... at 100 quid, it's probably the bargain on the marketplace atm
  22. Yes, I think I'd go back to your luthier and ask what the problem is Perhaps get him to tweak it a little, while you wait? That way you can be sure you've got an action / set-up you're happy with and if you both agree that a fret / one or two frets need attention - then you'll know what the problem is
  23. I must say, the grain is really nice on that body Normally, I'm not a huge fan of "natural" finishes - but if the wood grain looks great...... How about a transparent colour? Something you can still see much of the grain through?
  24. Hmmm, should I go for these? I've got 2 Fender basses with reverse tuners, and one with "normal" tuners... and I sometimes forget I'm playing the one with the non reverse tuners! lol
  25. Me too!
