1. Thanks for that Grahamd, Getting yourself a Tokai eh? Nice What year / era? I had a Tokai pickup in a Japan P bass once -sounded amazing.... wish I'd kept that pickup
2. I've not played one, but I've heard nothing but good reports about Squier Silver Series basses Fender Japan factory stuff all seems to be great quality gear.... This bass looks lovely - some nice upgrades too GLWTS
3. Very nice. I've been tempted to try a similar instrument myself - but have been put off by their price tag Happy NBD
4. Ditto question from me - what's the nut width? And what's the profile like? Is it a chunky P type neck or a newer style C profile? Sorry - that's lots of questions EDIT: Haven't picked up an early Korean Squier in a long time
5. Wow! What a great piece of rock & roll history! Didn't even realise this existed
6. PS. I Didn't put the "really annoying" bit on my reply, honestly! wasn't me PPS. highwayone - are these worth around £600 now? They seem to be selling for around this mark....
7. If you were booked and told your band, you should remind your band of this There's no way you should cancel the gig you're attending with your wife I work on the principle that whatever or whoever I promised first - that's what I stick with.... Being in several bands - I've been known to turn down paying gigs if I'd already promised my time to another band.... even if the 1st booking was only a freebie No dilemma for you here - now, if you hadn't already told your band you were unavailable........
8. Yes GroovyPlucker, I've got a China made Fender Jazz (with PJ pups) and a Squier Classic Vibe P - Which I'm sure are made in the same factory in China as these and the Matt Freeman's? Yes, they're absolutely top-quality instruments with great components and superb finish. I'm sure these will one day be regarded a bit like JV's now are... (Note: top-notch luthier Dave Dearnaley of Cardiff has even said this!) If I didn't already have a 5 string I really like - I'd be having this in a shot! GLWTS - someone's going to be happy
9. Hi, can you put "sold" in the thread title - so the mods can lock the thread? I'm looking for one of these atm, and yours keeps coming up as if it's still for sale lol Ta
10. No, as I haven't gigged it - so no one has had chance to take a pic As for it being awkward - This is probably the easiest EUB ever to play..... The tripod can be revolved into any position, and the bass can be revolved and locked into any rotation or angle- just like a camera tripod (which, being a "Manfrotto" it is) You set it up so the legs of the tripod are in the best position for you, and wherever you want to orient your feet.... Its' height is fully adjustable so you could play it whether you're 3 feet tall or 7 feet six, or you can play it while seated (see link for pics) You don't have to hold the bass - the tripod does that for you. In terms of "awkwardness" it's far more awkward to play bass guitar and a hundred times easier than a typical upright Plenty of action pics on the KYDD website - hope these photos help you visualise them in action http://www.kyddbass.com/artists.htm EDIT: Just thinking about this - heck, you could even play this whilst standing on a 45 degree slope! It's about the easiest instrument to play in terms of positioning... Even a harmonica requires both hands to hold it For me, I just find 30" scale awkward when swapping from 3/4 DB
11. Don't think I've seen a 5 string version of one of these Always wondered how these sounded, with those pickups?
12. Not sure vmaxblues? I got it from Gary (V8bass) on this very forum Yes, it really is a fab little instrument - I suspect if I hadn't played 3/4 DB first, I may well have just kept this amazing little EUB
13. Although there was nothing on the pickup to mark it as a Tonerider, I took one out of a Squier Classic Vibe P bass I only did this as I was having it pro converted to a PJ and wanted to try Entwistles The Squier CV pickup was actually really good. Guy I sold it to fitted it into a bass, and was over the moon with it I don't know if they are toneriders - but they're half decent, So if you can get one try it Alternatively, I can highly recommend the Entwistle PBXN. You need to rout out a deeper channel in the middle of your pickup cavity though ... for their oversized magnets - which don't half pack some punch! Don't be fooled by their low price btw
14. What strings are you using on the SLB now? Just in case I could tempt you with a trade?
15. Thanks for the bump alcytes I was hoping to sell this and /or my Squier CV P/J - so I could buy MattM's Limelight P, in Fiesta Red So there's a very specific trade I can add.... a Limelight P, with C profile neck
16. I am now considering asking Mark Morgan Richards to build a Fiesta Red Precision for me (as the one I was after has sold) Hectic weekend, including playing at 2 festivals - So I haven't had chance to take any more pics yet
17. Wow! I thought I had too many P basses Steve Browning! Re the neck profiles Steve - were the B profile necks the chunkiest? I had a 70's maple board and it had a really wide, deep neck - too chunky for me.... I'm now GASsing for a Fender Japan RI like your two sunburst ones - what are their necks like? DeeDee, I played a Japan 70's RI in Gwent Music, Newport - it was black, but not mirror scratchplate Maple board, blocks & bound. Looked lovely but neck too chunky for me It was there a couple of years, and hadn't sold - may even still be there The shop shipped it to their Cardiff branch for a few months.... but it didn't sell there either
18. I tend not to like a neck that's too chunky. I once owned a 70's US P and the neck was wide and deep I can cope with slightly wider neck, or a slightly deeper one - but not both lol Oddly enough, some Jazzes (like the 70's RI which I once owned) have a neck that I find too narrow, as they taper so much (never happy eh?) The twin of this that I played had an awesome neck.... I really, really want this bass..... I'm drooling
19. Never thought I'd do this, but here is my beloved Squier Classic Vibe P in Fiesta Red. But this one is not the norm It has been professionally made into a PJ, by the well known top luthier Dave Dearnaley in Cardiff. Dave has done a superb job routing the cavity for the J pickup - it's so neat you'd think it was a special run from the factory Dave also installed some new wiring & pots (not all of them, 2 I think) and installed BOTH new pups These are the wonderful Entwistle PBXN and JBXN pickups. These pickups are awesome - really powerful big sound, yet they retain that vintage Fender sound Made in China, same factory as the Matt Freeman P's and the rare short scale Jazzes - NOT same factory as the Affinity range The bass plays beautifully and is well balanced, with a C profile neck which although glossy, feels aged. It's in near mint condition, with just a few minor marks / blemishes The CV range are of the highest quality construction - I had a lovely 2000's US P bass, and there wasn't much in it re quality - in fact, this sounded much better once it was PJ'ed I'd prefer collection or to meet somewhere. I don't have a box atm, but could find a gigbag. As I don't have any scales, I can't weigh it - but I'm sure the extra pup hasn't added much weight - and the weight must be on Fender's website somewhere I had one of these before, sold it and instantly regretted it.... so I went out and bought another Please note - I've only advertised this as something else I really want has come up - if that sells, or my KYDD upright sells, I will be withdrawing this lovely bass More photos later
20. Gorgeous! Is the neck shallow, or deep i.e. like a typical older P bass. Or is it more of a Jazz profile? FuNkShUi of this forum sold a very similar one a couple of years back. It had a slimmer neck than other Limelight P's I've played Played it, loved it, always regretted not buying it!

My P's

Come on - tell us which one sounds best.... I can't bear the suspense! lol Given my current, and rather sudden onset of GAS for a 62 RI, on seeing the photo of your collection - perhaps I CAN justify one more P bass?
22. I've repaired a couple of basses - a new neck on an old 70's Japan, Matsumoko P bass I was lucky to get the loaded body very cheaply. I ended up with a lovely bass, sounded great, felt nice to play Sold it for a small profit (wish I'd kept the pickup though - sounded fab) But you're right - put a nice bass together from parts, and made nowt on it I can see how it's easy to lose money, building from decent components, sadly Just had to look at this again though - it looks a lot like the Fender MIM '50's P - but a fraction of the price Stunning colours & grain on that body

My P's

Best sounding? Hmmm... is it the Limelight?
24. Chris bought my Epifani Ul110 bass cabinet No quibbles, great communication - thoroughly good BC'er and all round nice bloke Really hope we can catch up again for a beer and more chatting
25. I've been there so many times Juliet - I feel your pain But - as others have pointed out, another door will open - just stay positive All those hours put in, learning a song you may not play again aren't wasted, honestly Focussing on a song you may otherwise never have learned can only help your listening and playing Until recently I was playing DB in a Bluegrass / Country / Acoustic Rootsy band, and we developed a great set - lots of stuff you never hear covered~ Then the singer / guitar /uke /mando player left and we all thought "how do you replace that?" He was great, and so versatile, Sad thing is, he formed the band, and has given up playing live The rest of us kept going, then the fiddle player leaves, and I must say, I was gutted But along came a fab singer / guitarist /Uke / Mandolin player, who is also a classically trained pianist! The music has changed direction a bit - but hey, we're learning more fab songs and having fun Her name is Juliet BTW lol Best of luck searching for a new band - but keep your chin up
