    Just echoing Jean Luc's comment above - the Squier VM Jaguar is a good starter. Though be sure to seek out the Short Scale (SS) version, as I think they do a long scale version too? Try one of these, then try some more models - as many as possible.... If the SS Jaguar feels too heavy & bulky - try the Ibanez Mikro Good luck to you both ooo - Hofner do a bass called the "Shorty" - it's 30" scale, but it's got a tiny body- so can feel odd to play. It's designed as a travel bass But it's light and quite cheap

    Standard (often called "long scale" on the string packets) scale basses are usually 34" Short scale basses are either 30" or often 30.5" Less common is Medium scale which is 32" - between the other scales When you say your daughter is petite, it may be the bulk of a bass which hinders her, as much as scale length As she already plays DB - stretching her left hand may not be such an issue, but weight may be, if she's small When looking at short scale basses - look at the size and bulk / weight of the body. A hollow bodied instrument can often weigh less Try as many as you can in shops, and ask to try them with a strap so she can judge the weight Also, she could consider something even smaller - there are shorter scale basses out there e.g. The Ibanez Mikro gets good reviews I think that's around 25.5" scale - small & super light weight Amps? There's another thread! lol - choice will depend on how & where it's to be used....

    As discreet says, these are unlike any other MIM basses out there. I know some people who'd much prefer a US P bass, and plenty of others who don't like roadworn / reliced instruments - but honestly, don't knock these till you've tried one My sunburst RW P is my go-to bass, in fact, it's my favourite I've ever owned or even played. I upgraded the pickups on mine - that's the only thing I'd do I keep trying to justify owning a Fiesta Red one to match - but Mrs S wouldn't be impressed, I'm sure Vintage Fender quality at a fraction of the cost and as has been said these are over £1,100 new So this one is an absolute bargain!     As others have said - instruments are there to be played, unless you've got one in a glass case. I mostly gig my Fender Roadworn P - so I'm not so bothered about bumps & dings. Theft is something I'm always conscious of - It's so easy for someone to break into a car, or pick something up when backs are turned Sometimes, I think I'm paranoid about it. I think gigging a bass worth so much might make me even worse! lol For gigs where I'm dubious about the crowd / venue, I have a couple of cheaper basses - though I'd still be upset if anything happened to my Squier CV P bass I don't own a Pre-CBS but this would be a real quandary for me too - I'd want to play it live, but would be distraught if it got pinched

    Bump. Just looked at the website for these unusual little instruments This bass would now set you back $1,995 US Dollars - and presumably, a hefty import charge, plus P&P !!! Grab yourself a bargain This one is in great condition - looks new, apart from a couple of small marks on the back of the body (out of sight)

    Years back, in my first era of bass playing, I had a Fender Musicmaster. It was quite old back then (early 80's) At the time, I sold it to get a 34" scale bass. Now wish I'd kept it. At the time, I felt it lacked a bit of bottom end Though that was probably due to string choice, set-up and my inexperience with amps / EQ'ing I've got a SS Jazz that I don't use much - its just nice to have it there lol It certainly lacks nothing a 34" has. Yes, it's lightweight and I don't have to stretch my left hand as much But short scale feels a bit odd to me - I can over-stretch or over-shoot notes if I'm not concentrating I've got a 32" Medium scale P bass, and I find that's an effortless switch from long scale EDIT: Some of my "problems" re scale length may be due to the fact I also play DB

I suspect that many of us don't actually "need" another bass But I understand your desire to get another one to replace the one you had years ago I spent ages trying to track down a Shaftesbury Rick, like I had in the early 80's - took me years in fact Now I have one, I rarely play it! lol I'm glad that P special isn't in a shop near me Ooooh, looks great

    Monday am bump, and those photos I promised PM me if you want any more. PS. Alcytes - yes it can be played with a bow EDIT: The bridge height is also easily adjusted - I've got it set fairly high, for slap playing Setting it lower would take 2-3 minutes

    I've recently become a real fan of the P/J pickup arrangement. It really is so flexible Each time I now play a straight P at rehearsal, jam or gig.... I wish I'd brought my P/J instead lol Don't see many of these around. I don't need one, but if I came across one in a shop - I'd have to try it If it played well, I must admit, I'd be tempted. As they get older, the value / price will increase, I'm sure

    I've found this problem a few times - not just on Precisions, and not just on my own basses (sometimes a pals bass, or at an open mic, or one in a shop) Others have also said they had this issue, and found it was solved with a good pro-setup, with new strings.... Getting the pickup height right can be an important factor too. If the top of the pickup is fully adjusted to be too far away from the E string, the signal may be weaker. But beware, as if it is too close this can have an adverse effect too. Especially with heavier gauge E string - if it's too close, a powerful magnet may stop the string from vibrating freely. I've heard people refer to this as "choking" I've fitted Entwistle PBXN's and JBXN's to both my P/J Precisions. Try the PBXN and don't let the low price tag fool you. You will need to rout a deep channel in the middle of your pup cavity - but the deep, huge magnets on PBXN's give them a BIG output. Best passive pups I've ever come across..... Start with the simplest of options though - a set up

    I'm generally louder with a pick too. Or is it that in certain songs, pick playing means some frequencies cut through better? But I just tend to use my ears to judge, and tweak the volume control on the bass to suit.... Helps if you can sound check both options too

    I took this in trade a few months back, from Gary (V8 bass) on this very forum However, I'm struggling to swap between playing 3/4 DB, and different scale length bass guitars... In truth, I'm tending to overshoot notes much of the time - I'm just stretching too far So I guess this amazing little instrument may suit someone wanting to try out DB / EUB or someone used to short (30") scale? As I say though it is a very interesting and amazingly portable DB / EUB - the most compact and lightweight I've seen Sounds quite frelless BG-like, but with EQ'ing and a bit of sponge near the bridge sounds a bit more DB-like Check out KYDD's website for full info - I'll take some pics later In great condition as from when Gary owned it (hasn't left my house since) 30" scale length Super lightweight Comes with Coffin carry gigbag and protection tube Also comes with Manfrotto Tripod stand Strung with Gary's original strings (La Bella?) And I'll throw in a set of D'Addario chrome flats Would prefer the buyer to try it out & collect - but am willing to sort something else out....

    I have one of these, in sunburst. They are absolutely amazing basses. Mine is the best P bass I've ever played. Wish I could justify owning another, as these look lovely in roadworn Fiesta Red. Don't know the weight of mine, but it's the lightest Fender P I've ever picked up. The neck feels lovely too. GLWTS

    Great stuff! I'm envious that you got to play the bass that was used on such a great record! I'm amazed at just how much P bass necks seem to vary. But is it possible that a pro luthier has slimmed this one down a bit? Would be great to know. I prefer a C shaped P neck too...
