  1. Choruses, delays, reverbs and compressors are very good, imho. Also great with guitar as well as bass.

The envelope filters and octavers I find difficult to tune in.

I don’t use preamps or cab or amp sims, but others on here speak very highly of them.all in all it is a great bang for buck box of tricks.

Plus, ToneLib editor (3rd party) is very useful.

  2. I played guitar, mandolin and bouzouki before I took up bass. Went straight to fretted and very soon after that to fretless. It was fretless that thrilled me like guitar used to.

Playing bass fixed my lousy timing, speeding up, etc. I went back to electric guitar for my last band, and now after a hiatus I’m playing bass again with mates from that band. I groove like a mutha, obviously, being steeped in the Scottish white funk tradition. I love it so much!

  3. Plus one for the Nova Dynamics.

I have one, and it is extremely flexible.

It has two channels, so you can set up each channel for a particular instrument.

You can also mix the amount of compression in each channel with dry signal.

They got a bad rap from Ovnilabs, who said the ones he tried had a noise he couldn’t dial out.

I have not been able to replicate the behaviour he described, so my advice is, if you see one GRAB IT!

  4. Anybody know what strings the SR500 comes with? The strings on mine (2 position minds switch so must be a couple of years old) are very nice and slippery .

I’ve got a Yamaha BBG II fretless incoming. Excited!

  5. This is great. I do like a bit of confirmation bias. Thanks guys.

Having come back to bass from guitar, I was hoping to escape the GAS death spiral, but NO!

Those Prestige and Premium SR models look very cool but not too boo-teeky.

In general I have given up on high end guitars and basses. Had some nice Gibsons back in the day.

Now I like my bitsa Tele and Jap Strat, and was very happy with my bitsa Jazz until I played the Ibanez.

  6. On TalkBass liking the Barts is like being the spawn of Satan or something. I like the sound meself, but that’s because it’s my first go at active pickups.

Can you suggest upgrades for the 500 should I decide they are too polite? Or am I on a slippery slope to eventually getting one of the posh SR’s with Nordstrands?
