Blockbustarz Glam covers at The Dreadnought in Bathgate. One of my fav gigs to be honest.

Sound check went well and everything sounded great.

Then for some weird reason i started to struggle to hear the bass out front. I had deliberately kept my on stage volume low and assumed the SE was on top of FOH.

Unfortunately i spoke with my wife at the end and she said she struggled to hear the bass at times. I'll have a word with SE next time we play. He was experienced a deep feedback ring that we couldn't identify and maybe he's dropped the bass FOH to help and possibly forgot to turn it back up. My wee fingers are aching tonight as i automatically play harder when i'm struggling to hear myself. In future i'll be setting my stage volume to suit me if FOH are just gonna turn me down. I always set my stage level to balance drum levels.

Other than that we had dancers from the get go. Only sold 40 tickets but a lot of walk-ins which the owner said was pretty normal these days.

Ended up reasonably busy when we started and the audience remained. We had folks up from Galashiels and some came over from Livingston to see us so we have a fan base out there 😂

2x1hr sets or thereabouts. 2 encores which was nice.

Odd thing was we had a crowd of Goths in and they were loving it and dancing virtually every song. At the end while loading car I overheard one of them say he's not danced that much in ages and loved it. So that was nice.

It was an 80-20% ticket deal tonight and we did OK with that as we usually do. Back again Sat before Xmas which is always a fun party night and very busy.

    Usual gear :-

    Sandberg VM4

    Shure GLXD+ wireless

    Keeley Bassist Comp.

    Handbox WB100

    Barefaced 212 cab

Loving this bass cab. Its lightweight and easy to lift but retains so much depth and the wide angle dispersion means i can clearly hear it if standing right next to it. Only downside is i always find 12's lack the mid punch of a 10" speaker but its still a superb cab and i just need to tweak my EQ  abit more. I am loving the tone i'm getting with this rig.

No more distortion when i play slightly harder now since i dropped the P pick up a touch on the VM4. I can still trigger it if i dig in really hard but i'm trying to play a bit lighter these days to save damaging my wee fingertips on plucking hand.

All in all a great wee night and the Pizza from next door was pretty good too.

50min drive home on quiet roads and a nice wee toasted pancake and coffee and now time for bed.

    Night night guys.

    Dave

My mob is in there next week Dave and as we were only booked a week ago we haven`t had much time to push the gig. Hope folk turn up!

One small mercy. At least there's no talk of a new album.

No it`s just a cash grab to pay for Noel`s no doubt very expensive divorce. Not knocking him by the way, I like Oasis and Noel`s solo stuff but sod paying that kind of money to see any band.

  3. Just watched a bit of Rod. I like the guy but I`m thinking it`s time to knock it on the head. He made a right bollox on Maggie Mae and his voice sounds quite weak. And yes I do know the guy is 80 but there comes a time...

  4. My best bass and most valuable in £`s gets gigged and as it`s a Roadworn 60th aniv Jazz it doesn`t matter if it gets dinged. I keep my eye on it at gigs as it so easy for someone to lift it when your back is turned say during a break.

On a similar line, I was talking to a guy in my local the other week who was playing a 6 grand Les Paul custom shop 59 re issue. After doing a soundcheck the 3 guys in the band disappeared out the back for a smoke leaving the Les Paul and a nice Ric just sitting near a door. Not something I would do especially where I come from :D

You won't like my comment @la bam, so don't read it, even if the solutions are in there.

Easiest way as it's what's your heading to with your vanity is stopping playing in any band.

Sounds harsh, but your behaviour is exactly that: harsh and selfish...

Wearing glasses is not an option, it's mandatory and concerning the distorted view with varifocal it's linked to the type of lenses, the cheapest one will give that effect and as you go up the range and price, there are excellent varifocal glasses that will allow you to read from left to right without any distortion or problem as well as from bottom to top : this is what they are really intended for and need a very tiny bit of time to get used to them IF you wear them all day long (took me exactly 1 second to get used to them and I only need glasses for close sight, but chose to have the perfect correction even for my very good far sight, which is now excellent).

But, excellent varifocal glasses are expensive, around 2 to 3 k£...

Think about it another way: I guess you're driving a car without glasses and not seeing anything at a remote to far distance, it's simply criminal and I hope you'll never get involved in an accident where it's proven that it's linked to your poor sight!

Concerning the weight of instruments, you could play sitting, using a Dynarette (https://www.thomann.co.uk/hopf_dynarette_high.htm) as this accessory will relieve all the weight, or use a lighter instrument for ALL sets, your back will thank you.

Now I'm certainly pissing against the wind as you seem to prefer the ostrich way than acting for the better ... and you know it.

Sit on your vanity and see the positive of all the above and I hope you're not dying your hair too or wearing a head covering to hide your baldness...

Told you you wouldn't like my comment.

Harsh and selfish? The op was just looking for helpful suggestions not character assassination.

  6. If you need a lightweight bass there seems to be some nice options out there these days. If I had the need and money I would speak to Shuker and get him to make something nice and light. I have crap eyesight due to various things and wear glasses when gigging. It`s a bit of a rubbish look in a rock band but as I can`t wear contact lenses, glasses it is.

In fact the one time I played without glasses, I couldn`t see the set list and a few comments were made that I was getting vain in my old age :D

In other words, do what can to make the gig easy. Good luck!

  7. We only gig about once a month. I do sod all exercise really but am trying to do more walking as I now deal with all the pa gear and am starting to feel it in my bones. Being a truck driver sitting down for long periods isn`t helping either.

My main problem when gigging is the first 2 fingers on my right hand. As we play pretty hard and fast (too fast sometimes thanks to drummer boy) my fingers end up chewed after the first set (we usually play for 2.5 hours). I`m trying to get used to playing with a pick but find it hard to get the speed and keep it consistent.

  9. Here is my Sire P5 bass for sale. Alder body, roasted maple neck, 42 mm nut width, bone nut, weight is 4 kg or8.9 lbs. Bass is in very good condition just one small mark on the very end of the headstock. As the front and side dots were black and I couldn`t see them due to the roasted maple, I have fitted stickers on the face of the board and luminous stars that glow on a dark stage on the top edge.

I will include a gig bag as well. Collection from Paisley or meet up within reason only.

  10. File this under stupid question due to being bored.

I have a Rumble 500 combo that has a 8 ohms output to another cab to give full power. As I seem to have an abundance of 10 inch pa cabs hanging about, could I connect a active top to the output, will it blow the combo or active speaker? I have to say that I haven`t tried this and dont not recommend trying this until someone with sense comments on this :D

  11. The Sire P5 was £400 new so the top end of your budget although they may have gone up in price. But they are worth the money. I bought one recently in Dakota Red and it was perfectly set up out the box and I havent had to touch it since. Much better than a Squier, Harley Benton and as good as a Fender Player for half the price.

  12. Well Saturday night being the first time I tried using the EV 12" sub didn`t go the way I thought it would. Due to the pub being in the centre of town unloading was a real pain and I had to move the car round into the multi storey so time was a bit tight for an 8pm start.

I used the venues DBR 12`s along with my sub but as soon as everything was powered up, there was a loud rumble type feedback from the sub. My mic was in line about a foot away from the sub/top so it may have been coming from that but even when I turned down the sub volume the noise was still there. As I was in a rush I just turned the sub off and went full range with the speakers. The DBR`s didn`t get any feedback from my mic.

I am thinking that possibly I didn`t have the sub connected right as it was very low down and beside the wall. It worked ok at low volumes in my home but I should have taken it down to the studio and spent some time on setting it up correctly so a lesson learned.
