If you are after a retro sound for less than 300 quid, you could go for one of the VM series, either the Jazz or the P with the Jazz and P pickup. The only thing with Squiers is sometimes the quality can be a bit dodgy (I haven`t tried any of the new models though) so mabye it would be better trying them out in the shop. Or better still, look out for a s/h Yamaha BB414 which has the P/J pickups. The Yamaha basses really are some of the best buys in any price range (as are Ibanez but you are looking for a retro sound) and one of these can be had for less than your budget.

The ESP seems grossly overpriced for a back up bass. Did the Wal ever sell?

Cracking deal. A US P bass for £350. Used to have a black one a few years back and sold it to Johnny frog on here.
I find the kilt very versatile when posting on Basschat. Warm in winter and refreshing scrotal ventilation in summer. What's not to like?? ...Don't answer that.
For using the statement "refreshing scrotal ventilation" Discreet, I truly believe that you are in fact a fellow Scotsman masquerading as a London "geezer." Come out of the closet, ya big Jessie!!

It is a bass body, routed out for P (precision) and J (jazz) pickups. Looks like a BC Rich body or a copy of one? Looking at the size of the pickup routs, it is more than likely a 4 string but hard to say for sure due to the angle of the photo`s. I don`t know how easy it would be to find a pointy type replacement neck for it but measure up the neck pocket and have a search for one. As for the hardware, Ch Guitars do decent stuff at reasonable cost. Good luck. http://www.chguitars.co.uk/

Hey Stinky, don`t fret about it. Years ago I had a compound fracture and dislocation on my left pinky and thanks to the wonders of modern medicine, it is now almost completely useless. I don`t use it for fretting the neck at all and have always managed to get by. I think most of us have had these herberts and most of them seem to be bedroom players or people who aren`t in a band as they are useless or lack the social skills required to be in a band They are jealous as you are the one playing the gig and not them.

Still here but not for much longer.

If you are playing in a beatles band, I guess it must be a Hofner or similar type bass. If your shoulder is giving you problems, I reckon you would need to get out and try some basses. Regarding other types of SS, the Squier Mustang isn`t light but the Jag SS gets a good write up. Or mabye you could follow Macca`s example below and get a Jazz.... I recently bought one of the cheaper TRBX 304`s and it is a superb bass for the cash. I can`t find one flaw with the build quality.

What`s the best club for metal then?

I think I wanna sell my stingray....but I am not sure!
jezzaboy replied to aende's topic in Bass Guitars
I`m not sure that a bass being a 1 trick pony is much of a problem. Take a P bass for instance. Most would say it only has 1 sound but for lots of players, it is the sound that is required. A Stingray is a great bit of kit and I would agree with Lozz above. Why not try a Sansamp or a Zoom B3 to add more sounds to your palette? -
Berkeley is by far the best rehearsal space but isn't that convenient to get to. We rehearse at lofi which for me is a second. Anyone any thoughts?
I find Lofi a terrible place. The sound in their small rooms is shocking, especially the ones where the drummer sits in an inshot. Berkeley is by far and above the best rehearsal place in the town. Decent gear, you don`t need to wipe your feet on the way out and Steve and the girls and guys are nice people when they get to know you. As for shopping, I find Guitarguitar, Merchant City and Kennys Music are all good stores with GG wining on the selection front and MC being the cheapest usually for strings and such like. Never had any problems with Steve at CC but each to their own.

Stray by Stray, funnily enough. Rainbow Rising and On Stage. Cozy and Ronnie, enough said. Let there be rock AC/DC.

I have the above in perfect working order and in good nick. Model KX 393. Collection only from the Paisley area. It`s one of these.

Touch wood and all that guff but I have gigged mine a few times and had no problems with it. I use it every night in the house as well through the headphones but can understand the lack of confidence once it goes pop.
I enjoyed the Status Quo one but currently reading Bob Daisley's 'for facts sake'. It's really interesting
Big plus 1 on Bob`s book. It cost me £25 if I remember but is a damm fine read.

I have used a white and red Bullet lead for the last couple of years. They are heavy but look cool. I paid £40 for mine but it is decent and has lasted so far. Curly is the new straight....

Look on the bright side lads. No up and coming bass players for the future = more work for us when we reach oldfartdom!

Didn`t they make some Mex Standards in the 90`s with the one piece plate and strat knobs? I`m sure I remember one of them for sale on Gumtree up here a couple of years ago.

I have the BG250 and Randombass is correct, there is no ext speaker out as the internal one is rated at 250 watts at 4 ohms, so in theory you are getting all the amps power. I have gigged it several times and it kept up with a 100 watt guitar amp and noisy drummer. It does seem a tad delicate though. The push buttons are a bit wobbly and the pvc covering on the cab doesnt seem very robust. But it sounds ok, is loud enough for my needs, is very light and I use the headphone and aux in function for all my home practice, which keeps the wife and neighbours happy.
I'm only vaguely curious about this, I reckon I'm all 'Rush live albummed out'.
Agree. They have "squeezed my lemon" far too many times on the live front. Or was that another band -
The singer in my last gig used an Nexus thinghy and had a cool little adaptor that fitted onto his mic stand. Looked okay and is much better than having a music stand or similar on stage. If you feel you need one, get one. Anything that makes you feel better on stage you should use. Most singers use lcd monitors on stage for the lyrics or do what Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics does and stick it inside a floor monitor.

why are Rickenbacker basses such a touchy subject?

The snack shop up the road from me got a cease order from the makers of the Ally McBeal show as they called their shop McBeals. The shop, all 10 sq feet of it, was a serious threat to the tv program. -
Thats the problem with some people. Rehearsals are for getting the song tight as a band not to learn how to play the song.
