On a similar vien. A few weeks ago we had a dep drummer and he was brilliant! He told us the last time he depped, the bands usual drummer was at a rehersal to tell him how to play the parts. The dep started to play and right away it was obvious to everyone that he was much better than the band`s drummer. After playing a couple of songs, the guitarist turned and said to the usual drummer, "ever felt that someone has just shag*ed your wife?" Jez
I *think* the issue is that bass wavelengths are much nearer the size of a room, so weird interference patterns, resonances and suchlike are much more pronounced than higher frequency instruments. Could be talking bollox mind you!
Well said Professor Blob- b.m.a, a.a., b.d.s, r.a.c. Jez- t.i.t.
how many weeks of sanding did it take... the poly on my VMJ appears to be really thick...
Yeah the finish seems really thick but it only took me about 15 mins to do the job with a fine sanding block. After that, I gave it a quick rub down with a finer bit of sandpaper and the job was done. I was suprised how quick the job took and it turned out really well. Here`s a photo. Sorry for the poorish quality, crap camera. Jez

Gotta say, I`ve had 2 of the new US p basses and have never had a neck dive problem with them or any other p for that matter. Having said that I always use a wide leather strap (oooerrr) with a suede backing. Whilst I think they are the classic bass design, I keep buying them and moving them on again as I end up unhappy with the sound but I think that is just down too me! But I have recently built one from all the Fender/Squire parts I had lying around and am enjoying it again. Jez

I have another idea for ya..... Take one VMJ bass, play it for a few weeks and then get fed up with the nice natural finish. Next, dismantle it and with a £3 sanding block (fine grade) rub off the clear varnish. Next, go to Halfords and buy a can of satin black car paint and give it a couple of coats-don`t bother with primer, much too professional. Admire the finish. Now the tricky bit. Take it to a hot sweaty gig and play it for 3 hours. Now, the reason for doing this is that a guitarist friend of mine has told me that the finish will wear really fast and will look suitably mojo`ed in no time at all and it will look as if it has been played for decades. So what was the result? The black finish from the back of the bass managed to transfer itself onto my Wranglers giving my jeans the mojo look but the bass looks the same Beware the god of artifical mojo!!! Jez
Hey brilliant. I thought Carole Kaye was on more tracks than that though.
I thought that Carol Kaye played on every session in the 60`s . She seems to think so! I knew that Larry "the mole" Taylor from Canned Heat played on some tracks but didn`t realise he played on that many tracks. Intresting info WOT. Jez -
Get yourself a Squire Vintage Modified or if you can bump up the budget slightly, a new Classic Vibe Jazz or a second hand one will be in budget. You can`t go wrong. Musicman copies, you could get a OLP copy for around £150ish but I don`t know how good they are but someone will no doubt put you right on them.. The Musicmans SUB`s are starting to go up in price and would more than likely be outwith your budget. Another option is the Ibanez ATK. Sounds like a Musicman and Hagguy has one for sale here for £250. A bargain price and they are really good basses abilet a bit fugly. Give the Epi`s a body swerve as they are more suited to classic rock/blues type stuff. Jez

Guitarist tunes between numbers - what to do?
jezzaboy replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
Our guitarist has a Gibson les paul studio and he re-tunes it after every, yes every, song. I have mentioned about taking it to a guitar tech as there is something wrong with it but it falls on deaf ears. It`s so bad that the singer makes a joke of it now. Having said that, he`s always in tune! Jez -
Check this out from one of my fellow countrymen. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Jazz-Bass-Gui...=item35a7d6b224 A bit expensive for a VMJ with a Jap neck. Hey PB, that`s a sh*t way to treat people. Too bloomin old? You are better off without them! That`s the bunch of tossers I almost joined. They sounded like a bunch of dreamers so I never bothered chasing it up. The way they put it across to me was that they wanted to get gigging asap and that was last November if I remember right. Up the Spiders!!!! Jez

40 minutes to go! 74RI Jazz in Manchester
jezzaboy replied to girya32's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That`s the wrong shape and style of logo for a 74. Og, I think you are right in saying it could be a 62 re-issue. They used that type of logo in 62 according to The Fender bass book. After 64, the "custom offset body" moved to the end of the head. Having said that, the tunning keys are the wrong style if it`s a 62. Mabye I am just being pedantic. If it`s a real Fender re-issue, we`ve missed a bargin. Still, I would know how to spell the name of the bass if I had did 100 gigs with it as is claimed. Jez -
These guys are seriously good. Love the version of Love me two times and the seeker. Cheers for posting the link, it has been sent to the bunch of to**ers that I play with titled "how it should be done". Jez

I was gonna post some smart ar*ed comment until I remembered I`m gigging tonight and all that stuff about bad karma...... Jez

My Squire VM Jazz is quite a heavy bugger Tom, as were the other 2 I tried. The body is soft maple. I have had a black Affinity P bass and found that quite light and it sounded suprisingly good. They are supposed to have an alder body and it was well made. On reflection, I should have kept it and upgraded it. Jez
-
So what you are paying for is a 2006 Mexican standard body with a Geddy neck and a baddass? Well, it sounds like a great deal to me. I must remember to bid on it, right after I put my goolies in the door and slam it shut several times. Jez

You will not be called Susan. That is the same colour as Pino`s. The photo below is a Hank Marvin custom shop Fiesta red strat. Still a cracking looking bass, whatever colour it is. Jez

You could be right about the money side John. My band are not the most expensive, usually gettin between 180 and 260 for pub gigs, and we are as busy as we want too be. There is only 4 of us and we dont travel too far. We have had to knock back gigs as our singer gets into trouble with his wife if he does too many saturdays! Regarding 2 bands up for the same gig, we work on the premise of if someone mucks us about or doesn`t want us, f**k em. We don`t bother asking for a reason for a knockback. But we are strictly a pub covers band with quite a good name so it could be a different story if we were doing our own stuff or wanted to earn better money. Jez

Pino on a budget. Looks good. Jez
I've been in music retail for almost 30 years. I worked in small independent shops for about 25 of them, then worked for the now defunct Academy of Sound and then Sound Control. The way SC worked forced me out of retail. The business has changed immensely over the years, but I couldn't handle SC's ridiculously unnattainable targets. Plus I couldn't get off early enough to get to long-distance gigs. Stupid, considering they needed to employ musicians. After a two-year stint working for an entertainment agency, which I loved, I was made redundant and now work at the old SC store in Hanley, which is now totally independent and is again The Academy Of Sound. I like the fact that we do P/X and get some nice gear coming through. Apart from the Markbass stuff, The Ashdown BTA 400 rig is probably the most impressive piece of kit I've seen and heard in a while.
I bought my Asdown MAG300 from Academy of sound in Ottago st Glasgow many moons ago. It was a great shop with helpful staff and still operates as CC Music with the (I think) old manager. And the Ashdown`s still going strong. Jez

I used to be a motorcycle nut for 10 years and one day I decided that I could not be ars*d with bikes. Don`t know why but that was over 2 years ago and people told me not to sell, keep a hold of it, you will get back into it. I gave it up, sold all my gear and bike and started to use the car. And do you know what? It`s the best thing I have ever done. Not missed it once. Sometimes you just have to move on and go with your feelings. Yours Paul McKenna. Jez
I have a Hondo II bass which was bought for me back in the 80's (roughly 1987) and I am wondering if it is any good and if it's worth anything at all? I'll have to take some photos, but I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about it from the model? In all honesty it's not really in great condition, but a lot of people like relics!!
Oh my god! Where is Captain Japcrap when you need him? (Said in 1960`s batman style). He`s your man. Jez

I think the only numbers you would get would be one for the samaratins. Remember, it`s worth a grand. Jez
