I've been in music retail for almost 30 years. I worked in small independent shops for about 25 of them, then worked for the now defunct Academy of Sound and then Sound Control. The way SC worked forced me out of retail. The business has changed immensely over the years, but I couldn't handle SC's ridiculously unnattainable targets. Plus I couldn't get off early enough to get to long-distance gigs. Stupid, considering they needed to employ musicians. After a two-year stint working for an entertainment agency, which I loved, I was made redundant and now work at the old SC store in Hanley, which is now totally independent and is again The Academy Of Sound. I like the fact that we do P/X and get some nice gear coming through. Apart from the Markbass stuff, The Ashdown BTA 400 rig is probably the most impressive piece of kit I've seen and heard in a while.
I bought my Asdown MAG300 from Academy of sound in Ottago st Glasgow many moons ago. It was a great shop with helpful staff and still operates as CC Music with the (I think) old manager. And the Ashdown`s still going strong. Jez

I used to be a motorcycle nut for 10 years and one day I decided that I could not be ars*d with bikes. Don`t know why but that was over 2 years ago and people told me not to sell, keep a hold of it, you will get back into it. I gave it up, sold all my gear and bike and started to use the car. And do you know what? It`s the best thing I have ever done. Not missed it once. Sometimes you just have to move on and go with your feelings. Yours Paul McKenna. Jez
I have a Hondo II bass which was bought for me back in the 80's (roughly 1987) and I am wondering if it is any good and if it's worth anything at all? I'll have to take some photos, but I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about it from the model? In all honesty it's not really in great condition, but a lot of people like relics!!
Oh my god! Where is Captain Japcrap when you need him? (Said in 1960`s batman style). He`s your man. Jez

I think the only numbers you would get would be one for the samaratins. Remember, it`s worth a grand. Jez

Your are right. "Live at the rainbow" was an official live album. Akkerman more than likley does drop a clanger but I forgive him! Jez

Lads, lads! Now we are cooking with gas. Bert Rutier on bass, Pierre Van Der Linden on drums, Thjis Van Leer on organ, flute and yodeling and Jan Akkerman on guitar. One of the best bands of the early 70`s and I love em. I think this clip is from around late 72, early 73 on whistle test. They are still going but they went astray when Akkerman left in 75. If you get a chance, check out the album Focus 3. The last track is called Anonymus two and lasts 26mins and was mostly done in one take. It even has a bass solo played by Akkerman. Jez

Just seen a bit on the Adam Clayton bass in this months guitar and bass, NAMM report. Guess the price? Go on! £6299!!! (Sorry if it`s in one of the older posts). It`s like paying for a night out with Kylie and Joe Brand turns up. Jez

Building a 2X10, advice would be appreciated
jezzaboy replied to waynepunkdude's topic in Amps and Cabs
Wayne, if you buy this months copy of guitar and bass magazine (the one with the Namm report on the cover), they tell you how to build a guitar cab. I imagine that you would be able to use the same basic principles for a bass cab but I imagine you would have to port the back or something. I haven`t read the article yet but it looks quite good. I`ll shut up now as I am rapidly running out of sense. Jez -
We have a dep drummer for a gig next saturday and he came down on thursday for a play and I dropped a fair few of the old bum notes. The drummer plays in a covers band who are a really good bunch of muso`s and I was a bit concerned that he would think that we are a bunch of chancers (which we are) and would blow us out. Got an e mail from him today saying he really enjoyed the rehersal and we made him feel really relaxed and he`s looking forward to the gig. And we are quite a good band. I think that sometimes we can beat ourselves up and on occasions, it can be a good thing. But try not to dwell on it too long. Keep the old chin up, as they say!! Jez
at the lady with the biggest boobs
That`s the only reason I play in a band! Yes I am that shallow. Another thing I`m bad for is if I am playing a song I know well, I tend to drift off and watch the Sky sports which is usually on the telly with the volume down. I was watching some horse racing from Dubia the other week. Jez

1964 Original Gold Sparkle Jazz Bass
jezzaboy replied to Sibob's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
8 out of 10 dog owners who expressed a preferance, though that was bloody funny! Jez -
Glad to see it`s back. Are you bidding on it Captain J? When I have another look at the description again, I notice that his mum bought it for him as a xmas present and the bass was basically goosed when she got it. Great present eh? Jez

What do you reckon the weight of this is? Jez

For sale subforum - shouldn't people have to put their location up?
jezzaboy replied to XB26354's topic in General Discussion
Another vote for putting the location on the post. It let`s you know right away if it`s worth your while keeping the drool flowing. Jez -
Squier Jazz Classic Vibe - undergoing make over

Aw naw man, ye cannye! Jez Ps Should this topic not be mooo`ved to the build diary section? -
If he wants to part it out I'll give him £25 for the neck, no sweat. J.
BA your all heart. Jez

I bought one recently and would recomend it. Fair enough, it`s a bit ugly but it plays like no other bass for the money. The neck is a handful but it`s worth it for the sounds you can get from it. There`s a couple for sale on here for around £230ish and for that money, it`s a steal!! Jez
-
Is it a fake? I`m more concerned with the lack of punctuation in the description. Doesn`t anyone use a blooming full stop or a paragraph these days? Has it gone out of fashion? I know it`s petty, but I can`t afford the bass anyway. Jez
-
Nice looking basses but at the end of the day they are (feel free to correct me if I`m wrong) a Cort bass, set up in Chicago and are therefore grossly overpriced. A G&L L 2000 built by the same company retails around £650 and is a fantastic piece of kit. It doesn`t add up to me. Jez
-
How the heck did I miss this? I went out and paid £407 for one of these 2 weeks ago! And you only live up the road!! Have a bump for a great sounding bass Hagguy. They are really versitile and have a good selection of sounds. The build quality is really good and mine is really light as well which surprised me. Jez

1962 Fender Precision Bass Guitar ?
jezzaboy replied to mistahbenn's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That logo was used between about 67-68 until 76 according to The Fender Bass-an illustrated history. And have you ever seen a set of tuners so clean on an old bass. Having said that, they could be genuine. And that strap button on the back-Ibanez. Am I the only person who thinks that there appears to be a lot of 60`s/70`s Fender basses appearing? Jez -
£100 for a baddass? He`s havin a larfff! At the end of the day, it`s a £480 bass brand new, so I reckon if he gets his 480 back, it`s a very good result. He should realise you don`t get your money back for upgrading. Jez
Anyone see the TV documentary on Lemmy a few years back? It was on BBC2 I think, following him around on tour. Very interesting. In his spare time he reads Jeeves & Wooster novels, believe it or not!
I think that the documentry you mean is Motorhead, live fast die old. It was on ch 4 and I recorded it onto vhs and then later onto dvd. It`s a class act. In fact, I`m gonna watch it the noo. And yes, I think that he did nail the chick!! Jez

He`s no kidding about the laminate crack in the neck. But what bit of the neck is laminated? Does he mean laquer? What is he on about? It looks like it has cracked across and caused the head to bend due to the tension. He`s good at putting the strings on as well, nice and even. Go on, someone e mail him about the bend and report back asap. Anyway, a right steal at the price. I`ll be watching this one, guffaww, guffaww. Jez
