1. The track I heard on radio 2 from Shea was full of teenage girls screaming. Giles Martin said they left the screaming in but after about 30 seconds, it did my head right in. What I could hear of the music sounded quite good considering they couldn`t hear one another. I can`t wait till October when the real Beatles movie - Supersonic, comes out
2.
That's a point.......... perhaps some T Rex?
Well Steve Currie played a P bass, a slab if I remember and Herbie Flowers plays a Jazz. 2000 posts!
3. Last year I went to see a band that I was in at one time and the singer guitarist had his face in his A4 folder through the entire gig. And there was zero interaction with the punters. It looked very unprofessional. That was maybe an extreme example but I see nothing wrong with having an ipad on a bracket, attached to the mike stand. If you ever see a Stereophonics gig, Kelly Jones has some monitors in front of him. One of these is a tv with the words scrolling down. I wouldn`t mind but he wrote the blooming words!!
4. Just bought a SR - Whoopeee!! But the stock strings? - Booo!! So if you want the strings (I think they are Elixars?) drop me a pm and I will stick them in the post to you.
5. The HB PB50 is still surprising me. It`s a right good bit of kit. If I didn`t have a £700+ Nate Mendel P bass sitting here, I would gig it more. And at around £90 delivered, it`s a steal. And if you don`t like it, send it back and Thomman give you back your cash
6. I always have a spare bass and a BD121. I don`t get the "its only a pub gig" mentality. To me, all gigs are as important as each other. The spare at the moment is a Harley Benton PB50 so no big worries if it goes walkies or gets damaged. Having said that, I have never had a bass or amp fail on me. It pays to look after the kit.
7. There is pages on Talkbass about the hot pre amp. There is/was a guy from the company on there and he showed a way how to change the wiring to sort out the issue. I don`t think you can simply adjust something in the pre amp to easily rectify it. Crazily enough, the company knows about the issue but says it wouldn`t be cost effective for them to solve it, which I find bizarre
8. I had one of the Peavey Minimax`s. It has plenty of power on tap and is small and easy to carry. But to me the chickenhead knobs and the push buttons below the knobs, are very cheaply made and when I pressed in the buttons, a popping noise could be heard through the speaker which did not fill me with confidence. Overall I don`t think the build quality was worth the price I paid for it, so it went back and a Trace Elliot now resides in the amp space. Not much difference This is only my opinion of the Peavey and I know that there are a few fans on here.
9. Twice divorced at 42?? You have been a busy boy Bought the Kindle book.
10.
I have the Indonesian SUB. A beautiful well made black and maple jobby. The pre amp is very hot and sends my Markbass into a digital distorted frenzy. I,m gonna get round to rectifying that.
Here is my solution to the pre amp issue. Rip it out and replace it with a passive circuit. A bit extreme but it works. Wilkinson pickup, volume, tone and a series/parallel switch.
11. I play in an acdc covers band playing music I love. We do about 1 gig a month for about £50 each a gig. I could go back to playing your set list no problem if I could get 1 or 2 gigs a week earning decent cash. The list isn`t too bad, I have played much worse songs than that And it gives you the chance to play with different people and you never know where that might lead. But where is the Slosh and Mustang Sally????
12.
The OP has put S.U.B so it will be the new entry level one, I'd never buy a new 34 over a used USA Ray myself.
I agree with that. I have owned all 3 below. A MM Stingray, 3 band eq with matching headstock, cracking bass but a bit heavy, bought s/h on here for £700. Good price. Sterling Ray 34, 2 band eq, Jazz neck, bought new for £650. Cracking bass but not worth the money new. Better to spend the extra on a s/h MM. Sterling Sub, 2 band eq, jazz style neck, black n maple, bought new for £309. This is the only one of the 3 I have left. I have spent approx £130 (pickup, wiring, tuners, labour costs) on upgrades due to the well known pre amp issue and wanting it to look cool. It is a decent bass without the upgrades but I bought it to modify. I would either get a MM Stingray s/h or the cheap Sterling Sub. The Sterling is too much money for what it is.
13. But what SUB are you thinking of? The MM Sub, around £400 ish used or the Sterling by MM Sub at £309 new?
14.
Does this translate as f.f.s. buy the f***ing bass as your driving everyone nuts ?
15. Well Jesus, hasnt been on here since May 2009 but maybe he will come back from the dead and revive this thread
16. Against my better judgment I will chime in. The Yamaha TRBX 304 is a really good bass. Typical Yam build quality, nice slim neck, good range of tones with the selector switch, two pickups. Progben`s s/h one above is really good value. The way I define a good bass is: 1 Would I gig it? 2 Do I like the tone and how the bass feels. I have owned one of these in the past and to me, it was a good bass. To avoid any doubt: they are great basses at the full price, even better at second hand prices.
17. Now sold. Thanks for the kind words. Lets hope I don`t regret it!!
18. A few years ago, I could not give away a high end Denon cassette deck and ended up putting it in the council recycle skip. Tapes were good if you used something like a Maxell XL2 s or a metal tape but I would not go back to using the format. Bloomin murder to find a track in the middle.
19.
Total bargain! I loved my EVO and regret selling it! This is a totally pro amp for peanuts!! Tone beast! Great EQ set-up!
Look just stop it will ya I have decided to go class D and have bought a Peavey Minimax. I wonder on whose review I decided to buy this on ......
20. I always practice sitting down. If I stand up I can`t catch myself in the hall mirror throwing some serious shapes But in the studio I always stand up. Well until I get fed up with the guitarist messing around with his amp settings for the 50th time, get bored then sit down.
21. I bought this from Thomman earlier this year and as I cant see them for sale anymore except in Dawsons (where they want nearly £600!!) I think it has been replaced by the 600 watt model. I`m looking for a firm £250 for it which is a decent price for what you get. It is almost as new, just a couple of marks on the black corner protectors. I bought the case in the picture at the same time to transport it in and if you want it, you can have it for an extra £25. I would prefer collection from Paisley where you can try it out or would drive to meet up. I have posted the specs below. Any questions fire away Variable Valve Drive – from zero to rock hero Whatever tonal character you're seeking, the valve drive control can take you there. Engage it and set on zero for a pristine solid state preamp tone, or wind it up to increase the level of true valve overdrive that gets blended into the signal, taking you from a hint of hair to a fat overdrive. The Drive level be preset and kicked in and out via footswitch, providing access to a huge range of clean, warm and overdriven tones. The best EQ in the business Imagine the simplicity of a traditional 3-band EQ but with the flexibility of a graphic equaliser...that's what the acclaimed ABM preamp delivers, and that's why it's as popular with bass-purists as it is with modern tone-shifters. Designed to be as simple to use as a 3-band EQ but offer outstanding tonal shaping options, the ABM EQ features familiar Bass, Middle and Treble rotary controls and two pairs of additional sliders. With the sliders set in the center position the three knobs function just like a classic 3-band EQ. But if you require more flexibility, the additional sliders allow you to fine tune the EQ in the regions the standard controls can't reach, providing a huge range of variation and allowing you to tailor the perfect sound for any gig. The EQ can be switched in via footswitch taking you from a flat fretless sound to your favourite EQ setting instantly. One knob compressor Kick it in and this simple to use, great sounding compressor delivers a powerful, even sound, guaranteed to help your bass fill out any mix. Sub-Harmonic Generator Once heard – never forgotten. The ABM Sub-Harmonic generator adds an octave below the notes being played bringing fullness to any bass part. The Sub level is independently controllable, letting you dial in anything from a subtle hint of deep bass to a full-on subterranean funk. Flexible Footswitching Paired with our FS-4 footswitch (not included) the ABM comes alive for onstage use, enabling on-the-fly tonal gearshifts. With footswitchable Valve Drive, Compression, EQ and Sub Harmonic Generator, ABM puts dozens of sound combinations at your feet, without so much as an effect pedal in sight. Professional Connections Not that you'd expect any less, ABM is loaded with connectivity. A Sub-Bass output to feed the desk or an additional amp, a tuner output, transparent FX loop and a Line Input for the connection of an external sampler or sound source. Output muting cuts the signal from the DI output but leaves the tuner output 'live', allowing the player to tune up in silence.
22. Now these babies have been around for a few months now, whats the verdict? I play in a rock band and am looking to replace my ABM 500 with a small amp. I will be running it with 2 cabs to get the full power. I had been looking at a GK MB500 but I like the features that the Peavey has and it`s a good bit cheaper. The only other Class D amp I have owned is a TC BH250 that went pop and it has put me off these kind of amps, but I`m looking to downsize a bit so I would more than likely get one from Thomman with the 3 year guarantee.
23.
Thanks, but that's sort of the point i'm making: "at the price". I'm not looking to compromise. If something decent is out of my means then that's too bad for me, but I don't just want something that's good for the price. I want something that's good.
You have "a few hundred pounds" to spend on a bass. Any bass you buy will be a compromise: what you can afford versus what you actually want to buy. You are being very vague on what you are looking for and as soon as someone offers a suggestion, you seem to go out of your way to dismiss it. Top tip. Go to guitarguitar or similar and try lots of basses in your budget.
24. The Sterling Sub basses are great bits of kit apart from the "hot" pre amp that is a problem for some people, myself included. If you want a Jazz, a second hand Mexican could be a good buy especially one of the post 09 models. If that is too much cash, a VM or Classic Vibe is generally considered a good buy. I had a black and maple VM77 and it was a cracker with no issues whatsoever. But it is a mass produced instrument and they can vary quality wise, especially Squier/Fenders. But imo, the best bit of kit in the £300 - £350 range is the Yamaha BB 424. At the price, whats not to like. 25.
Played at a Hells Angels MC bike event on Friday. Every track was greeted with an absolute wall of silence! We kept our heads down, got on with it and at the end of the gig the VP of the club came up to our guitarist and said it was brilliant and they loved it! What??? Speaking with the sound engineer afterwards we were told "you're walking out...that's a good sign!!!!!" Contrast that yesterday with a tiny village social club with maybe 20 people in there and the place bounced. Not really a rock venue but we were enthusiastically received and the venue want us back later this year. It just goes to show that you never can tell.
Same thing happened to us a couple of years ago. We played a clubhouse out in the wilds of Ayrshire and got mostly indifference at the end of each song. Bloomin scary. After the gig, the guy who ran the social side said we were brilliant and they loved us!! After the gig, we had the fastest load out ever in case we got sh**ged or shot. Or one then the other
