1.
I just point blank refused to play Alright Now Its the height of naff.
Im with you. Point blank refuse to play the song no matter how popular it is.
2. Roger2611 says "The start of Sex on Fire.....we have been playing it for six years now and the drummer and guitarist still cannot agree with the timings....that leaves muggins here stuck in the middle....I tend to go with the drummer....as the lessor of two evils! " Had the same problem and the solution was easy peasy. Get the drummer to start the song with the drum "riff" and you and the guitarist give each other the nod when one of you are coming in.
3. They reckon it is a 74 made from Western big leaf maple as epic correctly stated. And the tone control on all his stage basses are disconnected to prevent moisture getting into the electrics. So if you get one of these new ones and the tone control does sod all, it is a genuine sig model For more info on Steve`s bass and rig, get a copy of BGM, issue 83, October 2012.
4.
One of the most gorgeous of all bass designs. I just cannot live with Thunderbird ergonomics at all - but fabulous design and sound.
Same here. Loved em since I first saw Pete Way throwing his around on TOTP back in the day. No good for me but they are the best looking bass around.
5. The last one I did was in a popular Glasgow pub. Mostly blues stuff, sending you to sleep. Then we came on, an ac/dc tribute act. Gave them Bad boy boogie and Whole lotta rosie!! It woke the crowd up and we were asked to do more but the man running it said no Not been to one since. They seem a bit cliquey to me.
6. I don`t think many people would care. They are interested in the singer and lead guitar usually. And we go to all that trouble learning fancy runs...
7.
At the Banshee Labyrinth in Edinburgh with 5 Second Warning
Hi Johnny, you still gigging the old H1?
8.
It definitely would look better with a tinted fretboard and no West Ham logo. I wonder if there's any difference between the Seymour Duncan SPB-1 and the Steve Harris pickup...
But if it didn`t have the West Ham logo, what would be the point? I would gig one and I`m a Man United fan.
9. Nice bass Stevie. Got one myself from here last year and it is the best bass I have owned. Stuck on a set of chrome flatwounds and it was good to go. It is the best "P bass" I have owned. I usually use it in passive mode but kicking in the active really makes it sing. In fact, mine looks the same as yours. (Goes and checks mine is in it`s case! )
10. Skej, your last point is applicable to lots of businesses. I work in the tool/plant hire game and this happens all the time. If someone wants to hire something from us and we don`t have it, we will cross hire it from someone else to keep the sale and the customer. Even if we dont make a profit or even a small loss if it is an important customer. Back to basses. When Thomann can sell a Sterling MM sub for £232 and guitarguitar sells the same thing for £334, there is something wrong (or right!) somewhere along the line.
11. Bedders has been using it for a couple of years. I watched them play the BBC building closing down gig and clocked it then.
12. Note to self: if I open a bass shop, don`t offer the managers job to Milty.
13.
If we don't buy, the shop doesn't try. 2-way street. We can't complain about shops not trying after declining bass sales. That's why I'm trying to say that we all need to pull in the same direction. Want basses in shops? Buy basses in shops. They are businesses, and they will stock things that sell, and not stock things that don't sell. After these basses have been sitting so long, once they're sold, do you think they'll be replaced with more bass stock?
Got to disagree. If I went into this shop and the basses were in the state described, I would walk right back out again never to return, If you are selling the product, it is in your interest to show the product in its best light. Bad set up and rusty strings? There is no excuse for this. And I buy most of my basses from shops but ones where they pay some attention to the condition of the product they are selling.
14.
I wouldn't quit because of a bad keyboard player - I'd quit because of ANY keyboard player. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are great keyboard players out there, but I've not been lucky enough to be in a band with any of 'em. There's nothing worse than a keys player with a heavy left hand, and they all have them. IMHO, the best keys players are those who are not necessarily keys players but add texture and depth in a subtle and creative way. A keys player who is essentially a pianist is a nightmare. He will imagine he is the one everybody's come to see and the rest of the band are just supporting him in concert. They are NOT team players!
Spot on. The ones I have played with sound like either Richard Clayderman or Billy Smarts circus keyboard player.
15. We had decided to split the pa up so as to ease the load on my good self. Gave the drummer the 3 mike stands as he had a lot of drum crap to move around. First gig and we help him in with the gear and I notice something is missing. No mike stands and he stayed 40 miles away. Have you ever played a gig with your mic gaffer taped to a spare cymbal stand and a brush handle from the pub? I have.
16. This is my favourite bit of fretless playing at the moment. http://youtu.be/oHO-CKfxvH0
17. Didn`t Wesley or some other cheap brand have a range of perspex basses out a couple of years ago? Not suggesting that the one in the video is one by the way.
18. I usually wear black jeans, black t shirt or a grateful dead t shirt just to break up the black look. Thing is, I always wear the same knock off black converse style boots. It has gotten to the stage now that if I don`t wear them, I will have a crap gig, sorry worse than usual gig.
19. The last audition I had, the drummer was bloomin awful, the rhythm guitarist couldn`t really play and they were far too loud. On the way out, a keyboard player who was joining them said I was much better than the other guy and felt sure they would offer me the gig. They offered me it but I nicely declined. Always be nice and tactful with people as you dont know where they or you will turn up next.
20. I have owned many Ibbyzz over the years and I would go for the 500 or the 700 if your budget can stretch. They have a nice finish on them. The 300 are nice but why buy this model and upgrade the pickups, when you can buy the 500 and have a really good bass right from the off? And as icastle said above, try before you buy as the necks are positively Kate Moss.
21. Fantastic condition and these Yams are the business. GLWTS.
22. Basses in: Yamaha BB110s, Harley Benton Standard P bass copy. Amp: Ashdown MAG 300 2X10 Basses oot: Yamaha TRBX304, Yamaha RBX Amp: TC BG 250. This was the limited edition "Apache" model as it was sending out smoke signals one saturday afternoon just before a gig. What I have learned this year.... Just because a bass is cheap doesn`t mean it`s crap. Ashdown amps are the ones for me. Yamaha makes the best P bass, they really do...
23. There was a review of one in an issue of Guitar and bass magazine, maybe 12/18 months ago, so have a look on their website, it may be there. Haven`t seen one in the flesh though. Follow this link.... http://www.basscentr.../BBM-Wyman.html Oh and hello
24. I think that Glasgow has a decent range of bass gear. The last set of chromes I bought, I got from Merchant City. Also, guitarguitar has a guy called Paul if I remember right who is a bass player and knows of things bassy
25. A photo might just help
