Bitcrushers that don’t crush your low end or your wallet?
basexperience replied to basexperience's topic in Effects
Ah, wicked - I’ve been experimenting with the analogue side of my pedal setup this morning. Got midi control of the Future Impact and PolyMod Pro working! An FCB1010 with UNO 1.04 can do so much with these pedals... let me know what you’re using; interested to know as my project hasn’t started yet! -
Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!

Coming along nicely... the FCB is patch changing and expression controlling the Future Impact, whose Midi Thru feeds the Poly-mod filter. It works! the new project is going to sound insane...! -
Bitcrushers that don’t crush your low end or your wallet?
basexperience replied to basexperience's topic in Effects
Well now, I’m up for any sounds - this new project could well use all of them. What I meant was I was looking for a proper digital bitcrusher - not a ring mod which could be confused with one. Really good discussions on here, this is ace -

Exactly - digital bitcrusher is what I’m after here. Incidentally, I’m overwhelmed by the response, thanks guys, this is all totally excellent information! Warm Xmas glowy feels to the lot of you. -
Hello, fine low-enders. I’ve got a new project which needs some serious effects. Think Jojo Mayer / Nerve; so far I’ve got the basics down effects-wise, with a Future Impact, poly mod pro source audio filter (I went for the multi-instrument one), a good OC boss octaver, a Markbass super Synth for a little variety, and a FCB1010 with UNO 1.04 to give me totally mappable patch recall and expression across the Future Impact and filter pedals. To give me some lo-fi sounds, I need a bitcrusher. And it really needs to be a bitcrusher, not a slightly disguised mod pedal or ring mod. What’s out there now? Anyone know?

Exciting new project in the new year demands some very different sounds. So far my pedalboard has gained a Markbass Super Synth and a Future Impact, as well as a source audio poly mod pro filter. I’m planning to drive a lot of this with an FCB1010 with uno 1.04 onboard, to select patches and give me independent expression pedals for the Future Impact and the poly mod pro. All I need now is a good bitcrusher that doesn’t cost the earth... any suggestions? Ta in advance for your collective wisdom dumpage!

Definitely. But this could change soon. I listen to quite a lot of electronic music, and the stuff I play, although it’s wheeled around a lot, has never included that. The technical challenge of setup and configuration could be worth the candle, though... thankfully I live to play, no matter what the genre. As an ironic twist, though - I’d like to play Jazz in a band of understanding individuals, purely so I could get more experience of playing Jazz live with real musicians without feeling out of my depth or embarrassed. As a learning exercise.

Here’s me playing a bass arrangement of “Midnight” by Joe Satriani. I’ve started working on this again after many, many years:I’m using it as a study piece on SBL. A couple of mistakes, but the fluency is returning to it. MUST GET TEMPO STRAIGHT! https://youtu.be/71IbE0hNxPQ

I'd like to thank you guys for discussing this. I've played for 27 years now and theory has always been a huge turn-off. I'll be checking out some of those books: I can read dots but actual applied theory is something I just don't do at the moment. As a result, I've got chops but if someone gives me a chart, I've got to go through it with actual music to play against. I'd like to change this.

A major project - renovating a Trace Elliot V4 15" combo
basexperience replied to basexperience's topic in Amps and Cabs
Time to kick things off in 2016! News: 1. I've got an amp repair specialist in Reading who will look at the head and give it a good service and renovation 2. Richie is going to get the replacement speaker to Jamie so I can actually get hold of it (new neodymium 15 inch driver - a better replacement as it'll take some of the weight out!) 3. Not being a Tolex wrapper, I've engaged these guys to recover the cabinet: http://vyseamps.com all I have to do is strip to bare wood completely and ensure all surfaces are ready, they're based in Pinner so not too far. I think getting a pro to do this job is the ideal way to go. -
http://news.sky.com/story/1619890/motorhead-fans-watch-lemmys-funeral-online Apparently 230,000 were watching on YouTube. That's a hell of an audience, Lemmy.
A beautiful eulogy from his lad.
Particularly enjoyed him mentioning what his dad would threaten to do with a broomstick if people didn't stop talking over music. Hahaha
Phil Campbell "couldn't make it"...seriously? WTF
Yeah, I was pretty gobsmacked by that. Weird.

Lemmy's memorial service is streaming: this will be quite something.

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
basexperience replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
i always take 2 to a gig because i'm an expert at breaking a string.
Get your bridge checked, you probably have a burr or two there which is catching the windings. Get some micro-files and get the bridge smooth again. Or get a roller bridge, I can recommend those! -
Absolutely. That's why everybody acknowledges that Lemmy was a follower of the herd, a man with no mind of his own, who listened to everybody and ensured he did what they wanted. <chuckles>

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/growing-old-disgracefully-lemmy-on-heartbreak-ageing-and-his-penchant-for-nazi-memorabilia-2142747.html ""We were not heavy metal," he snaps. "We were a rock'n'roll band. Still are. Everyone always describes us as heavy metal even when I tell them otherwise. Why won't people listen?"" I rest my case. Uninformed? The man himself said it angrily in 2010!

Ok, here's my entry: a version (with a few fluffs) of "Midnight" by Joe Satriani, played on a 4-string Warwick FNA Jazzman: https://youtu.be/BeGlAtQrU74 Hope you like it, it's my first playing video! I recorded separately and mixed a little reverb in. Video was done on an iPhone 6, and I edited using microsoft's free movie maker, which is good for free!

I've got 9 if you include the Ashbory - I tend to use the 6 string a lot because it's got a GR55 it can drive, which means it can "be" several basses thanks to COSM modelling ;-) the musicman bass is particularly good on that, digs in beautifully. I gig regularly with 4 of these, one or two I wouldn't gig because they're dear to me, but the irony is I gig the expensive ones and don't mind them being dinged, etc - all part of the history you get with a working instrument! -
Good call Lojo. Lemmy was utterly sick of telling people they weren't a metal band!

Crafter Acoustic Replacement Nut and Saddle.
basexperience replied to Harrisonian91's topic in Repairs and Technical

I'll give it a look. Thanks
How did you get on? I have exactly the same repairs to do to exactly the same bass! The nut cracked and I need a bridge pin (I'd like to buy a complete set to keep some spares, I think). I like this bass and I'd like to be able to play it again!
-

Alas, "reliced" is not possible as the drummer has already stripped the tolex from everywhere apart from the bottom :-D -

Trace when they were UK based were definitely bastions of UK design and manufacturing. The latin is embossed in solder!!
