1.
tidy ! who's the dark-haired one though ?
shut it lol!
2. I've never even thought about using a capo as I have a 5 string so have all the flexibility I need really If other people want to use it then great! If it helps them play better/easier/cleaner then I don't see how it can be a bad thing?
3. My horror story was when I once sold a xbox 360 guitar hero game and guitar. Buyer paid no problem and I sent the guitar standard parcels and told him I'd done so. 2 days later I recieved an email saying he hadn't recieved it espite the address being correct. Odd, as the expected delivery time for parcels is between 3 and 5 working days, so i told him to give it a week and email me if it hadn't turned up. The next day another email saying it hadn't turned up, and again, I told him to wait. Couple days later the guy opens a dispute with paypal saying it hadn't been received, and because I didn't send it signed for, they immediately refunded it. So now I was out of pocket £70 plus fees and had no guitar/game either. About 3 months later I get a knock at my door was the Royal Mail returned the guitar/game, which the buyer had refused delivery of and told them to return it to sender...he also left me negative feedback. I guess he just changed his mind but didn't have the balls to actually tell me before I sent it.
4. 1) How long have you been playing Bass Guitar/String Bass for or both? Bass guitar on and off for 9 years. 2) If you don’t play string bass/bass guitar have you thought of doubling up on either to get more recognition as a bass player? I don't get what you mean. 3) Who are your favourite exponents of both string bass/bass guitar? Exponents? Not really sure I know what you mean. Pardon my ignorance. 4) Do you think that both the bass guitar and string bass are important as bass instruments? I only play bass guitar so can't comment on uprights but they, to me, are a fundamental part of any musical composition and give it the extra depth. 5) What genres do you think are important for bass players to listen to? Blues, Funk, and rock. 6) Do you think electric guitarists can learn to play bass guitar more than string bass? I think it's possibly and easier transition from guitar to bass guitar than to an upright as the playing style is similar minus the chords. 7) Do you think bass can be used to solo as well as accompany other instruments? Yea but without drums behind it it sounds empty. 8) Do you think it is important to learn to sight read? Depends on the type of music you play. Someone playing in an originals banf for example wouldn't really need it. 9) What do you think of bass guitars such as 5 string/6 string e.g. as being an add-on to the bass players role? I play a 5 string bass and wouldn't be without the bottom end now. Although I struggle to understand the purpose of a 6 string bass, surely it could just be as good as a barotone guitar? Each to their own though. 10) What are your opinions on electric upright basses as a substitute for the string bass? I don't have an opinion. Each to their own. 11) What is the best amp to use for bass guitar or string bass? One that fits the player. There is no single best amp as each has it's own characterists and appeal to different players. 12) What pickups for string bass are the best for capturing the natural tone of the instrument? I have EMG-HZ's on my bass and I'm more than happy with those. Never liked single coils though. Always felt a bit tinny.
5. This one seems to be still available. I was thinking of getting one similar for my nearly 5 year old's birthday. http://www.dv247.com/guitars/tanglewood-eb...der-blue--46919
6. Car - W reg Ford KA bought in sept for £1795 Basses/guitars - Dean Edge Pro 5 - £595 new, Ibanez 5 string acoustic £375 new, Laney RBW amp, maybe £200? Zoom B2 pedal, maybe £20? 'venom' LP style guitar - tenner if I'm lucky, boss distortion pedal bought last week for £39.. grand total £1239 Surprised my gear comes to that much
7. I would be focusing more on keeping them more interested and concentrated than on specific theory. For example you could create a fun exercise which incorporates some theory so they'll want to play it, but will be learning at the same time.
8. I never used to practice other than playing songs I already knew. But, I always felt crap as I wanted to practice more, I was just stuck in one of those'ruts' with no motivation. To get out of this I've started lessons and I'm now back to practicing every day, even if it's only for 10 mins.
9.
Maybe he liked the guys in his band. Maybe they weren't judgemental and had a good time playing together. Maybe they had a good laugh and didn't take themselves too seriously. Maybe they liked to keep the atmosphere light.
+1
10.
S5S Welcome back. I use this fingering excersize to warm up with. You can start it anywhere, but the key is to do it smoothly and slowly until you have it with no noises buzzes etc. Once you've done this you can play it as fast as you like. So, starting on any fret and any string, but keeping moving around the fret board 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 1 4 3 4 2 4 3 4 1. Im sure there are plenty of other and probably better ideas out there but this works for me. It has a bit of history as it was an exersize started by a famous and very well known guitar player. I hope this helps Matt I notice you've grown a second head while youve been away from Bass chat!
Great exercise... but not when you can't physically play bass.. lol
11. I use fast fret on my strings/fretboard, and a baby wipe on the rest. I love fast fret especially as it helps me play smoother/quicker too. Well worth the fiver
12.
To be blunt - a lesson is a lesson not a gig - you should not have to 'impress' your teacher with astonishing displays of technique (if you can, he probably isn't the right teacher - arguable) and any teacher who requires you to start a lesson with Donna Lee etc is clearly a prat. You should be able to warm up perfectly adequately by a few hand stretches as you go in through the front door of your teachers house/shop/studio or by a few moments of simple, comfortable playing. I know its a temptation to try and impress your teacher but if s/he is worth their salt, you will a, almost certainly fail, b, make yourself look immature and c, waste half your lesson showimg off what you know and learning nothing (which was, after all, the point of you going to the teacher in the first place).
Thanks for that. Makes perfect sense. I was more worried about over working my hands/fingers more than anything while I'm getting back used to playing daily
13.
The only pick player that has ever genuinely impressed me from a Bass playing perspective (as opposed to just being a solid part of the band) is Justin Chancellor from Tool. He's incredibly musical and really makes the most of his pick tone!. Si
+1 I use a mixture of both pick and fingerstyle depending on what I'm playing and what tone I want. I can't slap for sh*t though. lol I don't mind what other bass players do, but I'm easily bored by the 'never wandering off the root note' players.
14. Get one of these.... http://www.bill-lewington.com/Dean/basses/edge_pro_5.htm My baby
15. Thanks guys. As I suspected I got to my lesson and my fingers were like frozen sausages lol
16. Anyone know any warm ups you can do for your fingers/hands before you play when you can't actually physically play? I'm having to go straight to lessons from work and normally takes me a good 20 mins to warm up before I stop being sloppy!
17. Heard from the guy and have my first lesson tomorrow at 12.30
18. I work for the CAB and have seen a huge rise in redundancies so you have my sympathies. You say you're a bit of a collector.. how many have you got left now?
19.
IIRC, most of the pictures i've seen of you were taken in the pub
*whistles*
